WOW! I remember this song from back in the day, being young I thought she was saying "I need a hot shower" LOL!! Love the ad lib at the end, Philly in the house!!!
i loved this when i had the 12' single in 78. i so much prefer the weirdo singers of disco than the awful singing machines of today. theyre not even human. not even any fun compared to this shit.
@bobo007xx lady gaga is just an everyday singer pretending shes a weirdo. wearing stupid outfits doesnt make u a weirdo. anyone can wear weird clothes.
what a voice, why doesnt new talent take influence from such jaw dropping dance floor packing tunes, disco rules and karen god rest ya your in my heart n soul diva foreva love you for hot shot.
@spyderj1999 What you should have written is that the bass line of "Cuba" by The Gibson Brothers reminds you of "Hot Shot" by Karen Young. I wrote and produced "Hot Shot" for Karen Young in 1977, and it was released in 1978. The Gibson Brothers took our bass line and all of our harmony we'd written for "Hot Shot" and made "Cuba" out of it. That's the record biz for ya. sighhhhhhhhhhhh Andy Kahn
@spyderj1999 Mr. Kahn sounds so old.!My father was Mr. Kahn.... ANDY will do just fine. "Hot Shot" and Karen Young do live on. Karen's last public performance of "Hot Shot" in 1990, just four months before she died is posted on my You Tube page. I played a benefit concert in Philadelphia. Karen was the surprise guest. Another video from her fiinal appearance has Karen singing "Stormy Weather" on my YouTube page.
This is crazy !...I became a DJ in 79' and I ran this record for some years and all this time I thought Karen was black.....I love her voice / should have done more
@444Bam Wow, I had no idea she was white either!!! Her soulful voice drove me insane on the dance floor. Many nights I twirled to this song in the dance clubs because Karen Young delivered a stellar performance on this track. This clip proves she could hold her own easily next to so many other great divas of her day. Thanks so much for sharing this rare clip. Love her!!!
I was at the DCA in Phila when D.J. Kurt B. played this song for the first time in it's rough mix from a cassette...the club went absolutely wild. This will always be my all time favorite disco hit ...funny I never knew what she looked like until I saw this video...wow...
I have never seen her in person, but I was at the DCA when Kurt B. played the cassette of this song in its rough mix and the crowd went crazy. It has and always will be one of my all time favorite disco records of all time. R.I.P. Kurt and Karen Young. Andy Kahn, are you still with us?

Remembering this song being played at the gay clubs and many houses on Fire Island circa 1978. Dancing was celebrated by all, gays & straights together having a great time.
This song is still in heavy rotation on the Chicago house scene. Classic.I have partied hard to this song for over 20 years. It makes the crowd come alive and sing along, so much so, that when the DJ drops the music, the whole club is singing the lyrics, right now today. It has always been and still is a beautiful experience to be able to share that love in the club and at the house music cook outs. Thank you Karen Young.

This song was featured in the movie titled Reversal of Fortune. This song is playing and the people are formally dressed, In gowns and tuxedoes, dancing to this song.
2. Beside her vocal abilities, she could play piano incredibly well.
3. She was, in fact, obsessed with her appearance, especially regarding her weight.
4. Despite what most people think or say, Karen didn't perform onstage under the influence of drugs or alcohol. She was captivated by her own talent. That is what possessed her,.
I know...I wrote & produced "Hot Shot" for Karen Young. I was there for it all. Andy Kahn
@hotshotakb Thanks for the little tidbits about Karen Young. I always like to hear things like this from those who were actually THERE as you put it. I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it which was well after it was released.
It's amazing how little people know about an artist but are "experts" on them just the same. Karen was accused of being "high" during her entire professional career and up to the day she died in 1991. Sadly, the world lost an amazing performer, extraordiinarily gifted and surely would have been a superstar had her life not been unexpectedly cut short. This, of course only fueld more of the same rumors regarding how she abused herself. Simply NOT TRUE. Period. The End.
I always wondered why I didn't hear more about her. There's always a story about other artists who may not have become huge stars. She certainly had a a gift and seems like she was a great entertainer if this video is any indication.
The Soap Factory video only scratches the surface of Karen's phenomenal talent. She could write. She could play amazing piano. She could sing perfect background vocals. But more than anything, she was a volcano that erupted whenever she found herself in front of a microphone or an audience. The she simply sang her heart out. And everyone went nuts.
@hotshotakb u say u produced her track? im impressed :) im a small time ammeter producer myself (obv nothin to u :P) but wat do u think then of ur work being sampled by daft punk for their homework album track 'indo silver club' ? are u proud or . . ? im jus curious on ur views :)
@ghostom998 This a something that happens everyday. Actually, I'm honored they chose to use "Hot Shot." If nothing else, a lot of people were introduced to it for the first time by Daft Punk's including it. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Andy
I was so little when this song just blew my young mind away..that's why I love you-tube ..I'm just now figuring whom all my favorites are..supurb song and gal..this video reminds me of NYC so much..all four borough
@reddvelvet Bless you guys' hearts! I am quite the fan of disco music and underground hits that makes most of my friends (roughly from that era) wonder how I know such trendy hits that didn't go far but will go down in history as a stepping stone for future music. I started listening to KTU in '96...roughly when they came back to life. I was only in the 6th grade going to CS 102 (Beach Ave. in the Bronx) at the time. To this day KTU is still the BEAT OF NY!
She wasn't a "housewife." She grew up in the Oxford Circle neighborhood, never married, and was known to have pursued women (thus nullifying the housewife label totally).
I was one of the few thousand at Paradise Gradge in 1977 to get to see her perform this song -ACOUSTIC- they were promoting her new song and left this track so she wouldn't sign it. The crowd said hell no! We the crowd provided the rhythm track and backgrounds. It went on for ten minutes or more. It was magic. Best ever in my life.
She grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and attended Northeast High School. She was known to sing the customers' orders at Fun Bun, a hamburger joint that used to be on Castor Avenue.
Gosh!!! I always tough Karen Young was a black girl, she got all the black style, her voice is sooo powerful and beautiful!! Its da first time I see this vid and just love her!! This song has a special meaning in my life, from my childhood, and still makes me move everytime i heard it. Good memories!!
@latinoguy que preciosa cancion lamento mucho la partida de esta excelente cantante que hizo vibrar de alegria a la juventud de los 70 gracias amigo latinoguy por dejarme escribir esta semblanza.
@latinoguy OMG!! I lived the disco era and I didn't know about this. Another artist from this time who is also gone (Sylvester, too). RIP, Karen, and thanks. You gave joy to many teens from the 70s like me.
Love it when a singer sounds just as good live as she does on a recording. What a powerful voice, got a little Janis Joplin sound going on there as well :) That guy in white who was dancing was sure feeling, um, mighty real! Thanks for posting this, that woman was really talented.
SHE DIED!? I went to Northeast High with Harriet (Karen)! She changed her name to 'Karen' in 12 grade when she was just becoming a singer. We would study for our social study tests together......
@taffyfleas .....a good 'Jewish girl' from Oxford Circle, Philly. One day, our social studies teacher called us both up to his desk....we kept on getting the same test results on our true of false quizes !!! We were found out and our cover blown! She's pictured in the 1968 Northeast High yearbook playing the piano and singing with the music club. Every week she would come to social studies (1st period) with different colored hair! Finally, she settled on red and her career took off....
Karen Young grew up in a Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania rowhouse. Before becoming an overnight international recording star with "Hot Shot," she recorded jingles and background vocals for Philadelphia-based production companies. She died unexpectedly of a bleeding ulcer in 1992.
Had the honor & pleasure of playing keyboards for her in the short lived..Karen Young & the Restless.. I also recorded a couple demos with her of some tunes I wrote..The tunes are hot! This was back in 1981-1982 era.
hey jeff. it was re made last year by the original writer andy kahn from philadelphia. he sent me one of the first cd's before it came out to the public it's amazing.
The scary thing was AIDS was there, right on the horizon and ready to rear its head! We all danced not knowing it was lurking in many of us. Within about 4 years of this it blew up and life (everyone's) would never be the same! Listen to Don Henley's "The end of the innocence".
Lucky because they didn't have to worry about AIDS, about joblessness, about wars, even about ecology (although they should have, but they didn't know) etc... This goes for westerners, of course. I'm not talking about other parts of the world. But those who were born in the West between 1955 and 1965 make up the only generation of human beings who had a youth with no wars, famines, epidemics, etc... It never happened before and probably n

what causes a bleeding ulcer?
Lcaine22 2 years ago
Yes, she was an impressive performer.

Karen's on stage banter reminds me of Belle Barth or Pearl Williams.
This song is a classic. It's a shame she passed so young.

Nobody sees the resemblence with Roisin Murphy?
I love Roisin but hell... Sounds like Moloko all over, especially her tone and her adlibin'
Great discovery, thanx!

I didn't know that. RIP Karen. Was always a fav song of mine from the club days.

How sad....

You bet! The good old days without war, without AIDS, without bigots. Those of us who were born between 1975 and 1980 have very very lucky parents.
Rachegotter 3 years ago 5
The scary thing was AIDS was there, right on the horizon and ready to rear its head! We all danced not knowing it was lurking in many of us. Within about 4 years of this it blew up and life (everyone's) would never be the same! Listen to Don Henley's "The end of the innocence".

LOL. Yeah some of the crazy stories my Pops tells me they did in the 60's and 70's would get folks killed off the break today!!!
