  • That was really cool. I'm gonna try it :)

  • I just used it and it does work. It's a good tip to keep in your mind when you don't have a certain tool. It's better than nothing and I respect that the person was saying that children, etc could use it when they have nothing else or parent(s) with low income. If you can't afford the more expensive art supplies then headon down to the dollar store or dare I say...Wal-Mart because keeping up your dreams of drawing and expanding your skills shouldn't be stubbed by anything. No pun intended.

  • I haven't used it yet, but I'm going to try it until I can get to the store. You can also use a bristle paintbrush to blend without the silver shine. I got that tip off of youtube as well. Haven't tried it yet, but maybe someone will get something out of it. I think it's a good tip. Keep it up!

  • thanks a lot!!!

  • i use cotton buds :D

  • thanks this worked for me! :)

  • Thanks! Can't get out to buy one right now, so this keeps me drawing!

  • Hey! Thanks for sharing this, my ones i brought and got given have been mutilated with pastels :P So thanks for posting this :D

  • Or you could just oay 1 pound. Or jus shade

  • @TheMrJenkin

Well, if you run out of your store bought ones, don't feel like going all the way out to the nearest craft store for more, and just happen to have a sheet of newspaper lying around, I hope you keep this in mind.

You could use your fingers, but the oils naturally present on the hand tend to stain paper. Straight up shading does look better than anything blended in pencil, but it takes a very steady and deliberate hand to achieve a smooth gradient. This is just a helpful trick.

  • Does it work?

  • Not bad idea thanks for sharing, but I do use a piece of cotton

  • nice job...

  • Great vid!

  • Thanks for the great idea, as I seem to always misplacing my blending stump, now when I really need one, I can make one with out a lot of fuss.

  • THANK YOU .. it's a different kind of stump, but it works.

  • it works specially if you use black and white newspaper and fold it like this way in the video keep on folding it side by side to make the blending tip work better

  • It works best i think with construction paper. make it the same way and make sure the tip is well squared. Too big a space doesnt blend very well. great idea!! :D

  • works all the time works better if you thickeen it a bit

  • right on spot....thnx man...ve been searchin a lot for actual 'STUMP' .....not gettin it in my country....

  • Hey thanks for uploading this! (:

  • Thank you, you video helped a lot.

  • @WackyApolloWitch how good is the blending quality

  • @jjstudios100 It depends on the kind of paper you use to make the stump, I like to use white printer paper. The blending quality is not that bad but I would recommend buying pre-made stump that you can buy in art supply stores because the paper is rolled up thickly and is more compressed so you can blend larger and smaller area with the same stump. Well, I hope this helped. Good Luck : )

  • @WackyApolloWitch Thanks :)

  • this doesnt work

  • @z3r0p0in7

It does work; I use it all the time.

If it's not working on the type of paper you are using, I would suggest using a more textured piece of paper, or a softer material, like a tissue for your blending stump.

  • does it work ???

  • thank you soo much

    !

  • @rufusdogg

I understand that, im just saying i wouldnt recommend newspaper. if i were in dire need i would use a piece of blank sketch paper

  • i wouldnt suggest using newspaper or anything that has a printed ink on it as the ink can come off and smear onto your drawing.

  • @CultEvaded

This tutorial is meant for people who are looking for an inexpensive alternative to the blending stump, and newspaper is something that almost everyone has just lying around. The point of this is to be able to have a blending tool that can be made in a pinch, not to have something that is professional quality.

  • Thanks :) I just learned how helpful a blending stump would be a few minutes ago and when I found out you can make one, I went on a rampage on google xD

  • thats really cool i will try that thanks

  • thanks for this. i'm going to try several materials and see how they all work....newspaper, magazine, paper towel, and kleenex. we'll see how it goes. thanks for saving me some money!!!

  • Do you know how you call blending stump in Dutch?

    i hope it!

  • @farzadinho112

    No, I don't. Sorry... ):

  • @farzadinho112 mengen boomstronk

  • @farzadinho112 hmm.. een poleist stompje? ofzo. iets om het een beetje uit te vegen zodat je het "Schaduw" effect krijgt?

  • @farzadinho112 This is how you say it after 1 year......mengen boomstronk

  • I think you just made me save some bucks thanks!

  • @Mangasketch1 Good, good. That's what I was hoping to accomplish.

  • lol this is the first time i know such thing exist..hahaha

  • can you do this with like loose leaf paper??

  • I don't see why it wouldn't work.

  • hey if you hadnt disabled ratings that woud have been 4 and a half from mr.... half was taken off coz u could have talked us though it but any way great wideo

  • Thanks for the advice. We just recently got a new camera that records sound o_-, so I'm hoping future videos will include audio tutorials as well. If you have any specific questions, chances are I can help.

  • does the newsprint transfer when you use that for blending??

  • Not normally. If you press too hard after you've worn out the tip or if you're using a colored section, then there is a chance that it will, so you must be carefull with it.

If you're really worried about transferring, another thing you can use if a facial tissue, folding it in just the same way (just not one with lotion in it. That will stain your paper.)

  • You mean you don't recognize my hands?? ;.;

  • Sorry, no. I never spent a lot of time looking at your hands.

Please dear god do not take that the wrong way.

  • Damn, do you know how long it took me to realize this was your video? XD
