  • What are you talking about? You sound great! Did you rivet that wuhan? I can't believe I'm saying this, but... I really like it.

  • @NerfLad Thanks for the compliment! I did rivet the Wuhan china here, yes. It was a cheapy (as Wuhans often are) so I had no reservations about drilling it, lol.

I just added 4 equidistant rivets around the perimeter to give it the sizzle. I didn't much care for that cymbal before the rivets; with the rivets added, it sounded about 10x better! :D

  • @drumology2001 They really did bring it to life! I'm gonna do one now! What size drill bit did you use (and are they hardware store rivets)?

  • @NerfLad HeckifIknow! I can't remember - maybe 1/8" or 3/16" drill bit? And the rivets on it were just like brads (for holding paper together, with the foldy wings on them) that I got from a buddy who had a whole bag of them from Bosphorus and threw me a couple.

  • sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!(AND funky!);)

  • Ultra-sweet playing. So unassuming! You made the shuffle feel light and easy. If you could give one piece of advice to a fellow drummer who always has trouble keeping the up-tempo shuffle rhythm moving without getting tense, what would you say?

  • Thanks for the com(pli)ment! That "light and easy" feel came from lots of trial-and-error. Here's the advice I can give you:

    1) Focus on the 2 and 4 of the beat with your hands, but be thinking "1 and 3" to keep time moving forward.

    2) Simplify the shuffle. You'll notice that I take the 1 and 3 downbeats out of the typical shuffle beat on the snare, and often play quarter notes on the ride. Reducing the number of beats while maintaining the feel is the name of the game! Hope that helps! :D

  • Thanks so much for the ideas! I'll be putting them to use on an upcoming tour, so I appreciate your response so quickly. Cheers! :)

  • No problem! I'm always available and willing to help! :D

  • Love me some shuffle! I,too, set up my ride on my left side (I'm a right handed drummer). Actually, my "ride" on my right is a medium crash, which I love riding on, and my real ride is on the left side, like you play yours. Weird set up but I dig it like that. Also, my real ride is a rock ride, so while I do play it, I don't ride on it too often. I use the crash on my right. Weird, I know. But there are no rules.

  • For me, the crash/ride goes on the left side, and the main ride is on the right. But the main could also be considered a "crash/ride", since I lay into it pretty good sometimes, too. Like you said, there's no rules: whatever fits your sound and fits your style, more power to you I say! :D

  • that guy OWNES

  • great this is some very skillfull drumming nice vid

  • Nice job!

  • Thanks! :)

  • hay Derek, nice drumming, your the clockwork of this band. I'm a drummer also, playing in three bands. My favorite style is jazz and latin and funk. So we have alot incomment. keep grovin and i will follow you. greetz from the netherlands mike

  • very nice drumming man..!

4:39 my favorite part, the perfect feel...

  • very very nice....you played the music....and you did not over do it....very taisty fills....above all you swung your butt off and the band rocked because of that!

  • Wow - thanks for the great compliments! So glad you enjoyed it. ;)

  • that was fabulous!

    love the arm motions! HAHA

  • Thanks! Gotta' put on a show for the folks, right? :D

  • Great drumming man! Nice cymbals and feel, you DROVE the band......

  • Thank you, Mr. Cully! I appreciate it! :D

  • Man, these guys are like the best different music playing people who ever lived!!!! XD

  • Nice. I'd buy that kit if I had the money.. What was your scheme to buy your drums?? lol

  • swing haaaard,brother!!!:)

  • We don't have to play like Buddy to play good, and, you did a very good job here, mister! Very dynamic, swinging great!

Lots of musicality in your playing!

  • Thank you for the wonderful comment! I think we sometimes tell ourselves "we don't have to play like Buddy" as an act of consolation. ;)

My favorite part of this video is where I get to "play" Buddy from 4:29-4:42 with the yelling and egregious arm motions! :D

  • As near as makes no difference, you play this almost like Buddy did. You are excellent, the groove, ghost notes, dynamics etc you have the lot going on here. Thanks for posting this and I must check out more of your videos. Keep groovin bud.

  • Jeez...you're far too kind. And a liar. But a good one at that. :D

Thanks for the uplifting words. Please do go check out my other videos - I think I have somewhere around 40 posted on here, in all different genres. The most popular one is called "Jumpin' Gemini", so that's usually a good place to start I've heard. ;)

Hope you enjoy the other stuff. Thanks again!

  • Haha, well I did say "Almost" like Buddy, but when I see players like yourself on here I figure it costs nothing to pay a compliment or two:). Ill definately check out you're other videos, and who knows, I might find a rendition of Channel 1 Suite or Westside Story;). Good to chat to you man...

  • Even "almost" is a compliment when it comes to Buddy. :D

Funny you should mention those tunes; I've played West Side Story with this band before. I have it on the album we did a few years ago, but no video of the live or studio sessions, sadly.

  • hey, what kind of china are you playing? i've been looking for that exact sound in a china and have yet to find it

great job by the way, sounds great

  • Thanks for the comment! The china I'm using here is my Wuhan 18" china. I got it for around $35 brand new. That's not really an absolute steal, either - Wuhan's prices are always that extraordinarily low! Go pick yourself one up! :D

  • i got an 8" one a while back, for a whopping $10 during a sam ash sale, but i guess, i just need a bigger one, because it doesn't have the same sound. i play with mine flipped, would it help if i turned mine over like yours?

  • If I had the 8" "splash/china" like that, I'd play it flipped over, too. But with the big one, I prefer it the way it appears in the video: with the bell up. I like to tape dimes to it with masking tape for a little extra sizzle on most occasions. Give it a try - it works wonders.

  • awesome!!.....

  • Seriously good. Well done!

  • Hey there buddy....I got to hear BR play this song with his band back in 1969; you and the gang did a very presentable job! Bravo! The horn section sort of got ahead out of the gate...and when they go off down the road...it's pretty tough to bring them back in again! You did an admirable job holding the band together and your fills were quite interesting. The fact that you can find the places to improve proves beyond a doubt you'll go a long ways.

    Excellent work my friend!

  • Wow - thanks for the great comment! I wish I had been able to see Buddy live when I was young, but I came into the world just a little late for that. =(

Your commentary was right on: this can be a tough horn section to wrangle, as good as they are most of the time, and we definitely have places to tighten up. As far as my fills, I am trying to find ways to get things to sound more like Buddy, but like I said, he was "one of a kind". :D

  • tbh, yu could be the fattest guy onn earth and no1 would care at all, esp if yu carry on drummin like that

  • Thanks, brother. I'll try to NOT be the fattest guy on Earth, AND continue drumming. ;)

  • Forget that guy. Just another ignorant person we don't need on YouTube and your performance was CHOICE! I am really digging your cymbal near your hi hat. Is that a crash/ride? It sounds great!

  • Thanks for the support and compliments. :D

Yep, you nailed it: it's an Istanbul Mehmet Legend 19" Crash/Ride on my left side above the hi-hat. I got a great deal on it brand new at vintagedrum (dot) com...I think it was, like, $135 or something. Best purchase I've made in a long time. That thing sings! :D

  • Wow nice. Yeah that thing sounds beautiful. I think the best deal on a cymbal I've ever gotten was a 20" K Customs Dark Ride for like 65$

There's a full story to it if you want to here it ha ha ha.

  • Sounds like a steal...AND like you want to tell me the story, so let's hear it. :D

  • Well I don't know if you know who Nick Menza is- one of the drummers for the metal band Megadeath. My dad, who is a professional drummer, is great friends with him and this guy just had drums and cymbals literally lying around his studio. So when I first started playing about 3 years ago my dad was like, "You need real gear." So we went to this cats house and he was like "Rides-60$, crashes-50$, hi-hats-40$, splashes, chinas-35$".

I think the rest pretty much explains itself :P

  • Cool. Right on. Great story. ;)

  • Nice Nice Video. I really liked your video youtube can be a great asset for you. If you need any help getting your video exposed check out this site called tubeviews [dot net] It has really done wonders for me, I have build 3 channels up with videos at top in position and this is my forth channel i'm going to start working on.

    Nice.

  • Great video as always, brother, and I liked how you yelled out at times like Buddy used to do, I appreciated that. Keep postin 'em, man!

  • HAHAHA! Awesome - somebody caught that! I was hoping a YouTuber would say something about it.

It all started when the band was listening to a bunch of Buddy tracks in preparation for this tune; people were saying the most noticeable "isms" in Buddy's playing were 1) starting a tune with the hi-hat and yelling the count off, and 2) yelling during the shout choruses.

I did it in rehearsal as a joke, and everybody loved it, so it stayed in. It's a nice release of energy, anyways. :D

  • very nice

  • As always, really great.

I especially like the way you tend to read play between the figures, it adds such a great feel.

  • the band and you both sound great. love to watch your videos

  • Thanks, Mike - I'll let them know you said so. ;)

  • Very nice!

  • Once again I think you and the band sound great.

  • Thank you! Nice to have repeat viewers like yourself - thanks for being a subscriber. I appreciate your support and kind words. :D

  • great! respect!.Love your style

  • Thanks! ;)
