Hi your amazing! So i have a solid sterling silver Germeihardt and i am just wondering if this is a good flute? I listen to other people and they have a cool, silvery tone but mine is a warm tone. My teacher says it comes with time but i just can't seem to get it. Can you help me please? Thank you!!!! =)
whenever i play E, i can hear a little kind of metal, ringing sound. its really light, but it messes up my playing. do you know how i can fix this? the flute is fine, btw.
Oh my goodness you just saved my life... Ive been having a heck of a time getting my lower octave to play with a strong sound and putting the flute on my chin made a HUGE improvement... Thanks so much!! :)
Hey Nina I play flute left handed i wanted to know is there any modification i can make to my flute to better suite my playing i noticed the mouth piece is geared for right handed players does this affect my sound?
Nina you say that you line your embouchure hole with the centre of the first key and never turn the headjoint inwards. So what is your opinion of the Rockstro position because I find this works of me.
hi Nina, thank you for your lesson...but i tried the embouchure techniques you offer for free (thanks again) but it did not work as well as Sir James Galway method...he actually says the oposite, put it on your lips and roll in! i tryed it his way and it works!
still love you though Nina.... mantra "om mani padme hum"
I am having so much trouble getting any good tone out of my Flute. I've tried everything but nothing seems to change, i have no sweet spot!. I do have a bit of an overbite, could that be affecting my tone? Help?
@20001854 I don't think your bite would cause that much problem. Were you able to get a good sound but now you can't? If so, is your flute broken? Feel free to sign up for a web lesson - otherwise it is impossible for me to help just over email.

@Butterfly56ist -the key to playing your high notes softly is in your lips. I will recommend doing long tone exercises chromatically going down from your middle register B natural, and then going up starting on the same pitch (Purchase De La Sonorite by Marcel Moyse if at all possible for specific instructions) this will strengthen your lips and ease dynamic change and control. high notes u want to push your lower lip forward to stabilize the note w/o going flat to keep them soft. hope it helps
I am relearning the flute from when I first set it down about 7 years ago and your techniques are great! I never learned the chin technique from my other teacher, nor focusing on what side I am directing my air into.
I am a jazz saxophonist learning the flute. Whilst practising long tones i find my sweetspot then glance at my tuner and im very sharp, i have the head joint pulled out about half a cm, is there a standard distance to pull the head joint out ? or after building up more strength they will become more in tune? I have also received advice to "stick my jaw out" when forming the embourchure, and to stick it out further to get higher notes (rather then blowing harder) - is this necessary?
@georgegrantjazz I'm not hearing and seeing you but I would guess your flute is too high on the lip. Lower it, roll out and blow INTO the flute. You can also sign up for a web lesson if you want, details on my website realfluteproject
I always used to line up my flute with my head joint slightly turned out like but when I moved to the US my teachers made me turn it in. I prefer my turnout sound but they were insistent. Why is this?
@ahkwong1991 -I would try adjusting your embouchure. sometimes a too tight embouchure will create a 'fuzzy' sound. try loosening it up and practice long tones to strengthen the lips.
Love your instructions I do take lessons...over 50 here. Do you have any suggestions for the "hissing" sound I get. Mainly the middle octave. Don't know how to make it stop.
Hello, i am a very beginner with flute and at the moment i just train with mouthpiece only. The second time in this video when you play on the mouthpiece only, to my ears there is sort of "vibrato" in it? Is this natural and the way it should sound when holding a note or is it speacial technic (vibrato or so). It sounds sweet. (Sorry for my poor english).
@Kukuschi It is a tequnique that you will have to learn over time. You can watch her video about vibrato for more information, but it is like you are whispering a "ha ha ha" sound while you are playing. It is tricky, but sounds really nice on held notes once you master it. However, if you are just beginning, it would probably be more beneficial to first practice getting a nice resonant tone and learning fingerings.
A flute sounds by resonating tuned wavelengths out of the white noise.. How it produces white noise is wrapped in the physics of equilibrium and fluid flow. Air into and over the hole split along the edge of the embouchure plate. Differences between the air pressure into the body and outside of the body are always trying to be equal and the air pulls at and tries to raise and lower pressures and velocities at the edge of the plate making an oscillation in the air that is tuned to a note.
here in Holland I'm one of the fewest flute players who have the flute low on my chin and turned out!!! Also very nice to know! I'm going to try the angeling..
Hey Nina (or anyone), I'm planning on buying a new flute for myself. I have been playing for a while so i want a more advanced flute. I was wondering what are the benifits of getting an open holed flute. any brand suggestions? Nothing too expensive please
When playing, I'll be blunt and say that I need to improve A LOT, but first is there any advice you can give for when you have a 'static' like sound? Any exercises you could advise?
Hi Miss Perlove. I am a Piano student at the Royal Academy of Music and am studying flute as 3rd study, after Clarinet. I have found a perfect embouchure for the notes D below the staff to C on the staff. After that I feel I need to make adjustments. Should this be the case or should I find an embouchure to stay competent throughout all the registers? I rarely get a low C and anything above high C above the staff, then I need to struggle to get the higher notes. Please give me some tips???
@baroquescholar -your embouchure for low notes is going to be different than it is for high notes. if you try to play your low notes with the high note embouchure, they're going to be sharp, and high notes will be flat with the low embouchure. Look into working with a flute student that can show you how you should adjust for the diff registers. De La Sonorte will also help (Marcel Moyse) it explains what needs to be done and how to achieve the dexterity. Hope this helps.
My name is Ehab Saad Aldin. I am a medical student studying in Beirut, Lebanon. I recently bought a student flute and decided to learn how to play the flute. As I was checking youtube videos I stumbled on your AMAZING videos and I instantly fell in love with them! I really love ur musicality, your way of explaining things, your enthusiasm and energy as well as your delicate playing style! And I really find everything you say clear and instructive, even to a beginner like me!
This is lovely. First of: THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for sharing solid knowledge.
Now on: I've been playing like for half year, but since I've no resources at all to pay a techer, I've been self-learning, with a couple of books. I thought I've got quite dialed some tunes. Now I've seen this, I'm not so sure XD. But this is gold.
Just a couple of Q's:
you mind if I donwload? and would you mind if I put subs in spanish? 'cuz I know of people who would love to learn from this vid.
@christel9106 : try to realize that low register notes vibrate slower than higher register notes, not only the flute is vibrating but also the air coming out of your mouth, somehow you need to push "more air" into the flute, with more "space inside" your mouth (try dropping your jaw a little and relaxing the embrochure). The air streams must be different for higher notes and lower notes, and you will realize that in lower notes you need more air because the air goes into the flute much slower.
@christel9106 -first make sure your flute doesnt have any leaks, that will affect production. also, you need to adjust your embouchure and blow INTO the flute, not OVER the hole, if that makes sense. your upper lip is going to feel like its going over the hole more than normal, and your lower jaw is going to drop. try it slowly, slurring down from say, an F down to your C.
So Ive been playing alto sax in school And for the past week we are allowed to bring our instruments home. Well I like the saxophone but its just to heavy for me to bring it home.
So should i switch? if yes these are the choices (trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, bass, drums, tenor sax) Im thinking about getting either the flute, clarinet, or trumpet since its small. But what is the easiest to play and make a sound?
i have really puffy lips, like a really full top and bottom lip and my top lip much to my dismay is a tear-drop lip. should i be playing flute with mine? i've been playing for about five years now and i'm good but i still don't have that really nice woody tone. will i ever be able to master it with my lips or should i have chosen a reed instrument instead????
i pla flute too, and im in a 9th grade level i have been playing for three years now,yet i still have trouble, but this has helped me soooo much ! THANKYOU:DD
I played flute for two years in middle school, 11 years later, I'm returning to the basics. I've moved on my regret of quitting, but it's amazing how somethings come back naturally. Thank you for your tips!!
(continued) me a message giving me some tips on how to play high notes or make a video showing what mouth position and other things you have to do to get the high notes right(and keep the high notes going)??? please and thank you have a great day!
hello nina i just watched your video on sound production and it helped a lot. i started playing flute 4 weeks ago but just got all the fingerings down a few days ago. i feel like im a little behind in the flute which is frustrating when i play with my school band, so i would like to ask you a question. i can play low notes a bit easily, however high notes are very difficult for me to play. i cant get them right no matter how many people have explained it to me. i was wondering of you could send
in class they taught me to kiss the flute and roll it down to just below my lip while blowing like a mad man till i hear the sound. what you are saying is to go even lower? the way i usually play it the piece tends to press against my teeth.
i think i just answered my own question, perfect practice makes perfect
i do not know why but all of a sudden i have an airy tone. i know it's not my flute because on other flutes i sound airy too. this really happened within a day. Do you have any suggestions on what to do Nina? thank you
Hi nina. greetings from mexico. I starting to playing the flute but i can´t get a teacher, so i´m looking on you tube for some lessons. I discovered that the zone just below left index finger (the one that plays the C key) becomes a little red after playing from a while, Is this normal? that zone gets in contact with the flute and that causes the irritation, and it hurts a litte.
Amazing lesson Nina :D I was practising yesterday with my tuner out & found angling the air more to the crown of the flute kept me in tune a lot more than just blowing into the flute. ^_^ Thank-you for sharing your knowledge! :D
you are a brilliant brilliant person, my tone quality has always been awful!! for 5 years i've been playing my flute on my lip and i've always asked myself why does it sound so out of tune?! and why is my tone so airy?! you are amazing. THANK YOU!
@DaichiMage -the best way in my experience with teachers over the years on correcting airy tone is to practice long tones with a correct embouchure. Look into purchasing De La Sonorte by Marcel Moyse, it will help you, although you posted this so long ago maybe you've already become awesome!!! Hope this helps
What you do is just amazing. I love your lessons. I'm learning so much more than I did from my paid instructors. Thanx to you my tone has improved tremendously which was my goal with heading into college this fall.
you're the best Flute teacher ever, I've learned a lot of thing during 8:57, even more than things that my teacher taught me for 2 years, thank you so much, i wish you were my teacher :(
I practice everyday for producing a good sound, but it is very hard to completely eliminate the "wind" sound~ the "wind" sound gets more noticeable when playing higher notes. I tried tightening my mouth to focus the air stream more sharply, but it didn't seem to help.
is it normal to hear some wind sound by ourselves? as we are so close to our flute
hey! I'm a trumpet player, whos learning flute, and my band teacher gets mad when i ask him to have a lesson telling me if I'm doing anything wrong, he thinks i play to many instruments, and trumpet and flute are complete opposites. but if i were to make a video on youtube of me playing the flute, would you tell me EVERYTHING im doing wrong? :) ... actually, anyone for that matter who plays flute!
I have a little question, I've been thinking in start some trombone lessons cos I really dig that instrument! Do you think that would affect my flute embouchure and tone?
Nina I have a few questions on this video . I've been playing flute for quite a while now and have noticed a more pro sound to when I play. But lately I've have no I idea how to get 100% pure sound out of my instrument that brings it out. What do you think might help me? And how can i angle my air towards the left or right of the mouth piece to get the instruments sound production to really sound out. I determined flautist
Anyone have an thoughts? I've been singing my whole life as well as playing saxophone for 18 years and trumpet for about 5 or 6... I decided to pick up a flute two days ago and now that I've got most of the fingerings down I thought I'd check on some tone and vib. videos... as per this vid, when I move the HJ down to my chin, I can't get it to produce any sound whatsoever.. any hints?
@torosax if you can't get any sound at all, then you are either moved too low or else it is rolled in or out too far. You will need to experiment by making tiny adjustments and when you hear a great sound pop out, you know you hit the right spot! In many ways, you have to be your own teacher and use your ear as a guide.
@ninaflute Thanks a lot for responding so quickly! I think I might have gone too low... I placed it between my chin and the bottom of the gumline.. I think that part of my problem is that with my other two horns, I need to tighten my lower lip so naturally I think I'm doing it while trying to play the flute too...
@torosax Same advice as this other person but I mainly just wanted to say that we're twinsss. I'm a voice major but my secondary instrument is saxophone, followed by mellophone and other random instruments. I'm trying to learn flute this summer! Just work the embouchure every day as you would any other instrument and again, little adjustments and practice is all it takes.
@torosax Can you make a video about how to make a C note or A not or B not etc..that would mean so much to me...My music teacher said ...if i dont get it right..i will fail :( so i really need help with that..thanks <3
I am so glad I watched this! I may have to show my flute alliances this! They were taught by past band directors to blow straight over the top of the hole. (I never listened to the band directors... I did this from the start because as a 9 year old I thought it "sounded better") You are awesome and thanks for the help!
what about the left hand? I play a lot everyday and sometimes my forefinger hurts... I changed my flute from a closed toneholes to another with open toneholes, so I had to change the position of my left hand. But now I don't really know how to play completely safe, can you help me?
Nina, I just want to say TY for the advice about the placement of the flute on the chin. I am pretty much a self taught flutist. and this was a missing link. Ty.
i have a question about high notes, when i play them they don't give a resonating sound, its a really thin and piercing sound, is it because my lips are too tight? how do you fix it?
I blow over the hole of the flute, but you propably don t understand. You play much better as I, but thats physically not the way, the sound is created.
im practicing for region band and im getting really frustrated. i cant make my vibrato steady on the high notes. :( also, im trying the lower-rolling-out-method by i feel like my sound got airyer. ???
Fuzzypeaches772, flute isn't a hard instument to play its quite fun when you get good at playing but the embouchure is quite hard ... but i'm sure you'll do fine. CJS8F8!!!l isten, IT IS NOT about the tightness of the embouchure its about the force of the air your playing, like in the higher notes you will have to play 'faster'' more like forcing the air out more.but if your pitch is squeaky on the high notes just think "OR" and loosen the embrouchure but not completly!!! I hoped that helped xo
I love this video! I graduated with a flute performance degree and I have never had a teacher tell me to do this...perhaps they didn't think they needed to change anything in my positioning, but this has helped me tremendously! I am a little confused though...why can't you turn the headjoint out? Why must you use your hands? (I have hand problems and don't want to change my hand positioning) Is it for consistency of positioning the headjoint? Can you mark the headjoint placement instead?
It actually really is up to you which instrument you want to play, discover for yourself which instrument you personally like. Try multiple and stick to the one which you like. But once you've chosen your instrument don't give up at first if you fail or you are discouraged. It surely does take a person time to actually become good at it.
So please try multiple instruments and chose for yourself.
You have some interesting ideas, I'm pretty comfortable with my tone, but this gives me a few new things to try before I go auditioning for my masters. Gonna check out your other videos now :)
Nina, thanks for the lesson. I have played for thirty five years and took 8 years of lessons from the first chair floutist of the Air Force Symphony, Eric Seahafer, while living in my home town Washington, D.C. Greatest years of my life at $6/hr. Living in TN now and working as an oncologist but find deep comfort in your instruction. Exactly what I learned many years ago and my tone is great. Always need finger exercises since I don't play 3 hrs daily. Hoep to visit you just to say 'Hello".
Hey Nina Are Flutes For Girls I've Heard About Famos People That Played The Flute That Where Boys And My Teacher Said There Was No Boy Or Girl Insturments
Your teacher is completely correct! Many of the worlds greatest flutists are men. Just as some of the greatest trumpet players are women. Its a sterotype to think that the flute is a girls instrument. In fact, males genetics can provide some advantages to playing the flute. By that I mean males sometimes have larger lung capacities than females therefore giving you the ability to hold a tone longer. Nonetheless, your teacher is right. There is no boy or girl instrument
I am currently attempting to optimize my tone by just using the mouth-piece of the flute. Like you do in the end of this movie. I can get the same pitch as you, and it's terribly loud to my ears (I actually have to wear plugs) , but I don't feel the flute vibrating at all... what could I be doing wrong?
Hi Nina. You're videos have been a great help to me - especially this one.
I have been learning flute by myself for 2 years now. I thought I was doing very well, until I saw this video and realized that I need to change my sound-production technique.
I used to position the flute to high and close to me lower lip.
Hi Nina! Love the videos! But I have a probablem getting the same sound playing different dynamics. How can I control the sound when playing piano versus playing forte?
it's all about the lower lip. the air stream should be the same, but move the lip back for forte, allowing the air to go more directly into the tone hole. push the lip slightly forward to have a good piano tone.
I would just like to thank you for your videos Nina.I was given an old silver Rudall Carte flute today from my other halfs friend after she found out i play the penny whistle but would love to play the flute :)
Anyway it's 00.03 here right now but as soon as i get some sleep i will practice this in the morning.
On a different note i just got myself a nice piece of audio gear last week that i hope to put to use once i can play a tune, checkout Behringer's podcast studio
been awhile since ive come to watch your videos. well ive gotten my flute last july, and you videos got me on my way weee; its an artely flute.
my playing has improved and have a couple songs down. what im trying to do is learn a pink floyd song from sheet music. but im having trouble reading a note. how do i play a note that doesnt have the sharp flat or neutral sign next to it?
Thank you so much!! I've only just started teaching myself, and I struggled to get a sound! Now I know I was holding it too high, and now, thanks to you, I get a beautiful sound!! Thank you so much!
Thank you for that lesson. I could always feels my flute resonating on my fingers, but by aiming the air to the crown and thinking about shooting it down the tube from there- I can actually feel the air in my right pinky bursting out through the end of the flute, sound is great!
If you already play with the flute low on the chin, or too low on the chin, you may need to raise it up higher. Without seeing you play I can't be sure. Most students I see start with it too high. Always use your EAR as your guide, when it sounds better (resonant and in tune), stay in that position!
OMG, I have been playing for four years thinking that my crappy 3B is causing me more fret than good. Turns out that its my embouchure. Your tip helped save the day for me. Thanks a million!
ive been trying to play flute for a mont now, and i cant get all notes!!... y just get C,B,A, and G, the F i just cant make it sound!... im talkin about the lower tones... if someone can give an advice please!!!
if you are refering to the note just above teh bottom of the staff you want blow the air slower, you wanter "warmer air" rather than "cooler" air or thats how Dr. Whitner described it. I hope that helps.
I watched the video on where she talks about putting the flute more on your chin instead of right below your lip and I tried it and its hard but it takes getting used to.
Do you know any mute for flute? or may be you know any tricks to silent the flute so we can practice in the middle of the night without disturbing neighbours?..i really want to practice whenever i can, but i just don't have places to go to make noises.
mine is actually right on my lip.. i can feel the hole when im playing o.o but i try not to cover it.,as the person below me said,we all use the emborchure hole differently...
ive been playing the flute for 29 years as well as piccolos and fifes etc, all my orchestral flutes and piccolos had lip plates, not chin plates, Nina, you're a great player but some of us blow differently, not wrongly. i half cover the hole, James Galway style and it works for me.

Please give me some tips???
baroquescholar 1 year ago

Again: THANK YOU!

lower c is very hard to get. help anyone?
christel9106 1 year ago
@christel9106 : try to realize that low register notes vibrate slower than higher register notes, not only the flute is vibrating but also the air coming out of your mouth, somehow you need to push "more air" into the flute, with more "space inside" your mouth (try dropping your jaw a little and relaxing the embrochure). The air streams must be different for higher notes and lower notes, and you will realize that in lower notes you need more air because the air goes into the flute much slower.
clobaton 1 year ago

Hi nina. greetings from mexico.
How is supposed the flute to be holded?
Sorry for the bad english.

@DaichiMage -the best way in my experience with teachers over the years on correcting airy tone is to practice long tones with a correct embouchure.

Anyone have an thoughts? I've been singing my whole life as well as playing saxophone for 18 years and trumpet for about 5 or 6... I decided to pick up a flute two days ago and now that I've got most of the fingerings down I thought I'd check on some tone and vib. videos... as per this vid, when I move the HJ down to my chin, I can't get it to produce any sound whatsoever.. any hints?
torosax 1 year ago
@torosax if you can't get any sound at all, then you are either moved too low or else it is rolled in or out too far. You will need to experiment by making tiny adjustments and when you hear a great sound pop out, you know you hit the right spot! In many ways, you have to be your own teacher and use your ear as a guide.
ninaflute 1 year ago 3
@ninaflute Thanks a lot for responding so quickly! I think I might have gone too low... I placed it between my chin and the bottom of the gumline.. I think that part of my problem is that with my other two horns, I need to tighten my lower lip so naturally I think I'm doing it while trying to play the flute too...
torosax 1 year ago
@torosax Same advice as this other person but I mainly just wanted to say that we're twinsss. I'm a voice major but my secondary instrument is saxophone, followed by mellophone and other random instruments. I'm trying to learn flute this summer! Just work the embouchure every day as you would any other instrument and again, little adjustments and practice is all it takes.

Actually it's not the metal that produces the sound. It's the air column in the flute what begins to swing.

hi pplz! so for music i hv to choose an instrument and i want to choose the flute. is it an easy instrument to learn?! thaanks!
fuzzypeaches772 2 years ago
It actually really is up to you which instrument you want to play, discover for yourself which instrument you personally like. Try multiple and stick to the one which you like. But once you've chosen your instrument don't give up at first if you fail or you are discouraged. It surely does take a person time to actually become good at it.
So please try multiple instruments and chose for yourself.

Hey Nina Are Flutes For Girls I've Heard About Famos People That Played The Flute That Where Boys And My Teacher Said There Was No Boy Or Girl Insturments
Write Back A.S.A.P - Tucker
classtonowhere 2 years ago
Your teacher is completely correct! Many of the worlds greatest flutists are men. Just as some of the greatest trumpet players are women. Its a sterotype to think that the flute is a girls instrument. In fact, males genetics can provide some advantages to playing the flute. By that I mean males sometimes have larger lung capacities than females therefore giving you the ability to hold a tone longer. Nonetheless, your teacher is right. There is no boy or girl instrument

it's all about the lower lip. the air stream should be the same, but move the lip back for forte, allowing the air to go more directly into the tone hole. push the lip slightly forward to have a good piano tone.

If you already play with the flute low on the chin, or too low on the chin, you may need to raise it up higher. Without seeing you play I can't be sure. Most students I see start with it too high. Always use your EAR as your guide, when it sounds better (resonant and in tune), stay in that position!
