If you send the void ray in immediately it can provide vision for the cannons and soften up the crawlers. It was Zerg's mistake not to go straight to mutalisks + queens. Really, what could you have done back to him with that many spines up other than void rays? Queens would hold off the void rays and any ground army with transfuse.
