@grenda5 I don't know whether you caught this by looking at the earlier discussions. I'm a Christian, not a Buddhist. The point of the video is basically educational and to elicit discussion. I wouldn't say that my faith is strong; but it's based on the historical fact that Christ died for my sins. All those do's and don't won't get you anywhere, except into mysery. @wincorduan1 No, there is no historical fact that Jesus could do magic, because magic is a trick, so if anything, he was a douche-bag for tricking people or the people who wrote the book are liars. I'm not sure, but there is this thing I like to use, you may know it as thinking; it works, by the way.
@CntthnkO15 No need to be offensive, my skeptical friend. I believe I'm capable of thought. One has to make a distinction between magic (manipulation of spiritual forces) and miracles (God superseding the normal usual course of events). Jesus did not do magic. He did miracles by the power of the infinite God. A God, who can create a universe surely can do miracles. Historical sources, such as Tacitus, Josephus and the Talmud attest to Christ doing miracles.

@outlawbenning Assuming that you're interested in leading Buddhists to Christ, you should study it to know what you're up against. That's my purpose for posting the video. @outlawbenning The quote from the Qur'an is actually a composite of 98:6 and 9:29. It's not pretty. However, I don't know of any reason to think that Buddhism has any intention of violence towards Christians and Jews.
@outlawbenning If so, what are you actively doing to take the gospel to those who have not yet heard about Jesus Christ? Just griping about it doesn't help anyone see the truth.
@555dinamita Nevertheless, this is what millions of people believe and stake their eternal destiny on. That is why we need to learn what other people believe, who are just as human and you and I, so that we can share the gospel with them. I've always told my world religions classes that, as they're learning about other religions, they should pay attention to whether the Holy Spirit is calling them to greater ministry to those people in the world who've never even heard of Jesus.
@Jsen111 Frankly, no. And I'm not sure why you should want to. First of all, Buddhism and a theistic faith are fundamentally incompatible. Second, Buddhism does not address our most fundamental problem, namely that we are sinful beings who, by our fallen nature are alienated from our Creator. Buddha was right in saying that we must address the cause of suffering, but he misidentified it. Please watch my video, "Basic Christian Teachings." Thanks.
@KayBeeEee1983 No, I do not. I think it is essential for people of all faiths to understand each other's beliefs, not just as a mish-mash of politically correct religious hash, but including the differences between the religions. If I want to talk about Buddhism, I should be able to describe Buddhism (almost) as well as a Buddhist. Furthermore, I'm committed to discussing our faiths with each other on the basis of uncovering truth. My personal conviction is that biblical Christianity is true.
@wincorduan1 "Buddhism does not address our most fundamental problem, namely that we are sinful beings who, by our fallen nature are alienated from our Creator."
Actually, it does address that. By meditation and following the noble eightfold path and the five precepts, we overcome/control our "sinful" natures, end the cycle of death and rebirth, and reach nirvana (reuniting with our creator).
@KayBeeEee1983 Thanks for the comment. That's an interesting way of redefining words. "Sin" in Buddhism is not the same thing as it is in Christianity; it is ignorance, not violation of the rules of a holy God. There is no meaningful sense in which nirvana can be considered our "creator." It is not personal, and it does not cause anything to exist; in fact, it is the end of causation, viz. nirvana is the cessation of dependent origination. OTOH there is no cycle of rebirths in Christianity.
@wincorduan1 If you're going to study spirituality and seek truth, you need to understand the essence of terms, not just their superficial definitions. Sin is wrongdoing. Nirvana is heaven, i.e. being close to God.
If you're only going by the biblical/Judeo-Christian definition of "sin", then of course Buddhism doesn't address our sinfulness. Because Buddhists don't go by the laws of Moses.
@KayBeeEee1983 Exactly. I'm not concerned with "true" or "false" in my comment, but with the basic meaning of words. Christians use the J-D def. of "sin." Buddhists don't. That's not trivial. Whoever may be right, it's not the same concept. Nirvana is heaven? Not according to most Buddhist scholars. Nirvana is a state beyond heaven, certainly not close to God, since Buddhism is hardly a theistic religion. The idea of an "essence of terms" beyond their meaning is unintelligible.
@atfatw A spelling error. :) I meant it to say J-C for Judeo-Christian. "def." stands for "definition." So, in long form: Christians use the Judeo-Christian definition of sin, namely an offense against God by violating his commandments and compromising his holiness. Buddhists do not. For Buddhism "sin" is a violation of the dharma, one's proper deportment, which influences one's rebirths. There is some overlap in what's entailed, e.g. not lying, but the concepts are different.
@Jsen111 Actually yes, from my experience Buddhism is very tolerant of other faiths... Many people in the western countries see Buddhism as more of a philosophy or way of life. Every Buddhist temple I have been to welcomes all faiths. They do not try to convert or preach just try to explain. So yes you absolutely can incorporate the two.
@Jsen111 I am a Buddhist nun who teaches the Dharma. Some of my students are Catholic (3 Capuchin Franciscan monks), two are Muslim, 2 are Jewish, 2 are Baptist. The rest come from various backgrounds, mostly Christian/Atheist/Agnostic. A quote from H.H. Dalai Lama is "Don't study Buddhism to become Buddhist. Study it to become a better whatever you are."
Thank you for the video. For all faiths, take what is helpful and leave what is not, but if you examine the precepts presented here you see that there is no "push" for you to believe in any particular God. Buddhism is generally understood today as a religion and the Buddha is considered to be a God, but this is not so. Buddhism is a teaching that explains the nature of life and how to end its suffering at its root cause. The Buddha was the man, like you and me, who discovered this revelation.
@ubvids Thank you. You are certainly on target. In its pure form at least, Buddhism is not a theistic faith. Even though it acknowledges the reality of the Vedic deities, they play no role in a person's search for enlightenment. There is no Supreme Being or Creator. But in that case, how can the Buddha's teaching be a revelation? It can only be his intellectual discovery or speculation. Also, if you select what you like from religions, you make yourself your own god--not a reliable idea.
@vengencefrom1979 You know, off-hand I can't see anything in Buddhism that even could be either verifiable or falsifiable by the standards of science. It's not testable by either historical or empirical evidence. Assuming the Buddha's existence can be shown to be true by historical standards, it's still not possible to adjudicate his teachings on scientific grounds. So, in one sense you're right; in another sense it's apples and oranges. IOW, Buddhism involves a leap into the unknowable.
@wincorduan1 a lot of so called religious truths are like a car with an engine that backfires. it will get you cross country but odds are that the engine will be damaged by the time you get there. societies engines (the people) are often damaged, and usually with dire consequences. sticking with science and math i absolve myself of it.
@PolishCutie93 Precepts 6, 7, and 8 are meant for bikhus and lay people when they observe special days, more strictly kept in Theravada. In many Mahayana orders, they do not observe these; for example, they may eat dinner in the evening "as medicine for hunger." In Theravada, on particular days, lay people dress in white; not use any jewelry, make-up, fragrances, etc., not attend theaters, public dances, etc., and lunch will be their last meal until sunrise the next day.
@SuperALguitar: You're right with regard to the root, "budh." From Apte's Dictionary:
budh: 1. to know, understand, comprehend; 2. to perceive, notice; 3. to deem; 4. to heed; 5. to think; 6. to wake up, awake, rise from sleep; 7. to regain consciousness, come to one's senses.. . .
@wonhyo56 True enough, but not the one in this video. :) The real Ananda was Sakyamuni's cousin and personal attendant. He did not attain enlightenment until after the Buddha's departure, shortly prior to the first council. Still, because of his exceptional memory, tradition says that he recalled all of the Buddha's sutras verbatim. That's why all of the sutras begin with "Thus I have heard . . . " In the Chan traditions he is considered to be the second patriarch, right after Mahakasyapa.
@ifthyder. Thanks for the comment. I couldn't imagine "confronting" my Creator, or, for that matter, appearing before him, without having been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Both of you just believe in a fiction though. Jesus was just a character in a repeating story. If you look at the history it's pretty clear Christianity ripped off the previous religion's details and mythology. As amazing as Mohammed was for women's rights at the time he had no witnesses for his miracles, that's sketchy. Unless you believe Jesus keeps re-manifesting like the Vishnu Hindu concept. Thanks for your video though. Nice to have people online spreading good information :)
@ScissorHand26 Thanks for the comment. The idea that Christianity ripped off the myths and details of previous religions is a constant refrain, memorized and passed on from generation to generation. If I may say so, having studied history and the history of religions in great detail, I can see where people may think so if they 1) expect to see it and 2) ignore details to the contrary. However, if you really study the data, that old bromide simply does not hold up.
@ifthyder The Qur'an holds out hope that, if I were a good Muslim, I might qualify for heaven, if God deems my works as sufficient. The Bible teaches that I can have assurance of salvation because the blood of Jesus in his death on the cross covers all of my sins, not my good works, such as there might be. Please watch the video, "Basic Christian Teaching."
The life tought mebthat mostly of the times the pain and the deep sadness is the conseguence of the impossibility to satisfy my desires, not by my desires...and this is true for at least the 95% of the men i've known.....Who's wrong,me and the other 95 or the human nature??I know that were the men follow the buddhism the people were more happy..once..not now,is only to look at the japanese or indian ,the nation of Laos in these last years..mostly of the chinese i know are materialistic..why??

budh: 1. to know, understand, comprehend; 2. to perceive, notice; 3. to deem; 4. to heed; 5. to think; 6. to wake up, awake, rise from sleep; 7. to regain consciousness, come to one's senses.. . .
buddha: 1. Known, understood, perceived; 2. Awakended, awake; 3. Observed; 4. Enlightened, wise.

@wonhyo56 Ananda is the name of the high ranking monk during Buddha era
paingsoeaung 6 months ago
@wonhyo56 True enough, but not the one in this video. :) The real Ananda was Sakyamuni's cousin and personal attendant. He did not attain enlightenment until after the Buddha's departure, shortly prior to the first council. Still, because of his exceptional memory, tradition says that he recalled all of the Buddha's sutras verbatim. That's why all of the sutras begin with "Thus I have heard . . . " In the Chan traditions he is considered to be the second patriarch, right after Mahakasyapa.

Read quran only then you able to confront your creator.

@ScissorHand26 is that why mohammed raped so many women?

@ifthyder The Qur'an holds out hope that, if I were a good Muslim, I might qualify for heaven, if God deems my works as sufficient. The Bible teaches that I can have assurance of salvation because the blood of Jesus in his death on the cross covers all of my sins, not my good works, such as there might be. Please watch the video, "Basic Christian Teaching."

I went to college for 10 years to become a pharmacist while thinking that having a 6 figure salary would make me happy......I was wrong. The instructions in this video are a much better path towards enlightenment and being content.
