Wow. Those costumes with the furry feet at the beginning are trippy. Not what I was expecting after listening to the original Chess soundtrack for so many years.
Wish they would do a new version of Chess at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles (they filmed a scene from The Aviator there).
I agree... I thought this was in the 1980's... Not in a production of Hairspray. It's a little hard to imagine this with such costumes. The Swedish version is more credible, costume-wise and singing-wise.
I'm sorry, but I can't see any text that states it takes place in 1967.
The usual production is around the 1980's, more or less. I wasn't saying that this production wasn't set in some other time period, only that in general Chess is set in the 80's. Hence, I got a little confused.
This version of the show (based on the original London version) starts with a TV announcer saying "Welcome to the chess world championship in Merano in 1967". You are thinking of the Broadway version that takes place in the 80ies and also has partially different music (e.g. Someone elses story)
It takes place in 1967? I don't know much about the time of the piece, but in general (at least 3 versions) it's around 1980.
I'm totally OK with the time period (just confused), but I'm not quite sure I'm OK with the Hairspray-style costumes. It seems incongruous with the serious plot.
The music was written for English lyrics, and it shows. Even though the German version is adapted quite nicely to the tune at the start, it doesn't fit at all later on (says me, a German). Plus, the German name of that place is "Meran" (it's an old German settlement that happens to be an Italian town since after World War I).

This looks absolutely horrible. More like Hairspray than the normally phenomenal Chess.

You are wrong, it clearly states in the text that this takes place in 1967.

Link to an English version, anyone?
