The range of Elbow is astounding. Grounds for Divorce, Great Expectations, Open Arms, The Fix, and Lippy Kids are all breathtaking, but yet all have different tones. HOW DO THEY PLAY SO WELL IN SO MANY DIFFERENT STYLES?!
@nimpo46 that's a good song. they've got recent stuff like mirror, tower crane driver and dear friends off the latest album which is of a similar vein to this. they played this on the last tour as well, magical. never cried so much listening on record and live.
@nimpo46 i wasn't criticising those songs, i was saying they're of a similar vein to this. i wouldn't say it's a cringefest, there are parts of it that are poor (with love, jesus is a rochdale girl PERHAPS, high ideals) but dear friends is beautiful, similar to this, open arms is just a nice reminder of family lyrically, lippy kids is also beautiful, birds the way it builds etc.
Thanks for posting this song. I lurve it! So bittersweet. Love the line about him being strung like a violin and she "had a face with the grace of a different age." Who writes stuff like that these days? Well, he does, duh. But still... so visually evocative. And I love it when a rock band isn't afraid to go slow. Anyone can hit the mark when it's fast and furious, but it takes real skill to control the voice, etc. at a slower rhythm.
The brush on snare track coming in at 1:17 brings a near industrial feel to the drums... this track has all the emotion of 'Friend of Ours' (well, a different kind of emotion) and all the bad-assery of Bones of You.
most romantic song ever recorded
