@deawootango you know nothing about the rotax v-twin... It is not a push rod v-twin it produces 175 HP in a stock bike that Buell is building as we speak that weighs less than the EBR superbike... Buell will never build a I-4... He did have plans for a I-3 before H-D shut him down... Erik loves high torque high HP motors... I-4 can produce HP but lacks torque.
America needs a sportbike manufacturer like yesterday. The preoccupation that these guys have with those old-fashioned v-twin pushrod air cooled engines is sickening. It's just ironic that nobody but Erik Buell saw that the sport bike arena is where the money is at. I can't wait for him to get himself sorted out, ditch the large capacity V-twins and start putting out a decent 600cc I-4 for the masses.
I'm pulling for Erik. Buell was the only thing H-D had going for them. Why did H-D never develop the XR750 for street use? Honda, Yamaha, Kaw, Ducati and even Triumph know how key a race team is to your brand. It baffles me why image conscious H-D never promoted Buell as their racing heritage, or even the XR750 for that matter. What I wouldn't do to have an XR! Anyone in the market for a $25K custom H-D? Didn't think so. Things change. :-)
@dobypaw That's an XR in name only and just H-D trying to capitalize on a long since dead racing cred. That new plastic fake tanked monstrosity weighs 562 lbs DRY compared to a real XR750 was just under 300 lbs dry, just like a real race bike should weigh. I really want to like H-D, I really do, they just come off looking like poseurs with this 'XR'
Still, when their real XR750s are racing flat track, there really is nothing that comes close. Those bikes flat out dominate. Chris Carr FTW!
@austntexan Now I disagree, Harley has a lot going for them, their large touring bikes, mid-range touring bikes and cruisers. But, i agree that they should have NEVER axed Buell. My dad (almost 60) just picked one up to go along with his Roadglide, and he loves the damn thing to death (so do I, but i'll take my street bob over it for any distance). Buell's are fun as hell, plain and simple.
If he had not mangled the 1125 and done it right Harley would not have had to shut him down and we would already be riding Cool looking Rotax twins "assembled" in USA. They never were able to get the bugs out of the 1125 so this will be interesting, and No I'm not a Buell hater I have bought 5. I just felt embarrassed for the company when the through the 1225 not ready for prime time out to the public. Even if you got one at $5,000 you paid too much compared to a reliable used bike.
@brad1445 Harley didnt shut down Buell because of the 1125r alone, they had to downsize the company , hell the just made all thier employees take a 20 % pay cut or they would move the factory out of state and fire everyone
@brad1445 You do understand that most if not almost all of the problems with the bike were due to Harley-Davidson and their stupid restrictions on Erik right? When/if Erik releases the 1190RS I think you will have to eat these words like the 1190RR is eating up all the competition in Europe right now.
You do realize that Buell wouldn't be the same company if Harley didn't buy them, right? The xb series was born from harley funding. Then a lot of the internals were harley's test bed for sportster parts. Some of the old tube frames had to have recalls because they were LIGHTING ON FIRE. That might be a problem for some riders. Those recalls could have kicked Buell in the junk if it wasn't for HD backing it. Buell were fun bikes, but the didn't have enough market.
I've owned HD and an 1125r. I know a few things about both, considering I also worked in the industry during the time they went under. I also hope for a return, as Buell is still holding in there with this race setup.
@brad1445 Umm, HD *DIDN'T* have to shut Buell down. They had a few purchase offers from various companies, and rejected all of them, even when one of them upped their offer. Now you tell me who the uncooperative party in that relation was, just based on this one fact.
@brad1445 Since they were losing money, according to you anyway, they still could take a writeoff in a sale as they'd invariably sell at a loss, right? Though hard to say anything without knowing anything about their finances. but we know HD is financially savvy (*cough*MV*cough*) If it were me? I'd choose to sell Buell so that some people would keep their jobs in a tough economy, and someone else could take a shot at running the only American sport bike manufacturer.
@brad1445 Harley was not losing money on Buell, they were making Money actually however the current CEO of Harley has the typical modern Harley attitude and HATES sport bikes thus why He axed the brand, BTW, one of the major complaints from Buell owners was the horrible treatment at Harley dealerships for years. Oh yea, and Harley sales were down 80 percent as of jan 2009, I sincerely hope the brand goes under, horrible Company. Feel free to google the motorcyclist article on it, Thanks
@fafaforza Well, it wasn't so much that HD and Buell are competitors. Its was part of Buell's separation from HD. It was away to keep him from going to Victory/Polaris or BRP.
@wrangomonger Just my 2 cents, but look at like a Buell 1125r. Those things are nice as hell. If not, have fun with the Yamaha

Brad, you're a tool.
The bike you passed on has 26k miles with very few problems.
In fact I think I'll go ride it some more today.
I am happy every day that you passed on this bike.

Nope I blame Eik, his name was on it, IF he did not want it he could have quit but instead he produced b*stard bikes. 3 Model years in a row.

No non-compete clause, Harley lifted it in June-ish. New bike out sometime late this year. 1190RS.

@edjunker LOL, on what planet does Buell compete with HD? How bonkers is that. They don't even want to use HD's crappy twins any more.

@fafaforza Crappy v-twins? sir, this is not bizarro world
