no cat engine has ever been able to run in reverse firing order, thats a myth for cats. old detroits can tho, i believe the 6-71 can, oftenly used in dump trucks; but no caterpillar engine can reverse the firing order and run backwards.
@784plb agreed. the injector wouldnt be firing at the right time. But i know if you turn an old d4 backwards it will push the oil in the oil-bath air cleaner out the precleaner and into your lap ;) but it wont run on its own like this.
Danger, these old cats would start backwards, if you the "two speed", better known as the forward-reverse shifter in the wrong gear, you can start the engine better, which will quickly destroy the engine! No oil pressure and exhaust through the intake!
when my mate was building his 38 Footer Aquastar he had a choice volvo v8 or caterpillar power both similar output volvo max power at 3800 rpm cat 1800 rpm cat £4500 more almost twice as heavy he still runs his boat same cat engine still as good as ever they are very good on par with the British Lister diesels build for a lifetime
The pony motor on some of those old beasts weren't very reliable. One I ran would either start on the first try or not at all. Most of the times I fired it up I had to us a D7 to give it a push start.
i remember when i was growing up watching my granddad & great uncle push starting the ole D6 They had in the family excavating business thanks for the great video
Ya just grab the clutch lever with your left hand and yank it back towards you! Then you gaze at the lovely cloud of hydrocarbons. I'm starting to cry here.
Gas engine sucks balls. Steam engines are way more fucking powerful

you can install a electric start on one for about 500 bucks... did it to mine much better and it can crank it when its cold with ease
