As a former Fish Drill Team member and one the dashing young men you see in this here video, I would love to know who Wyrmshadow is, especially since you said you were there while this was being filmed and that this is the only remaining copy of the video. I happen to have a VHS in my footlocker. By the way, this is Mini-jar.
There are no rules governing the Guidon bearer. He's just to distract the judges from any possible mistakes the block might make. Btw... the wind grabbed it.
Hear this little man. Youtube comments are usually the stupidest around, but I feel you still need to be schooled in this subject. The young men you see here have only been drilling for a grand total of 5 months. Marines in the Silent Drill Team do tours of around 2 years. Practice is all they do while these young men also attend a large university.
I was there standing next to the person filming this. I can tell you without any exageration that the Marine Corps DI's judging the competition were INCREDIBLY impressed with this performance. And I overheard "just like the Silent Drill Team" more than a few times. I bet you're also one of those idiots that thinks the drill team in aFewGoodMen were Marines. Nope... former members of this same team. Eat that you flamer.
No Idea. The competition, as every year, takes place at Tulane university. I personaly had a problem with some of the judging. During the Squad Basic, one DI took off no points and said it was perfect while another docks the team like 15 points. And there was a big change in rules from the previous year.
I was with the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps in DC for 8-years; maybe they should use the Marines from the SDP to be judges. I know those guys are probably the same ages, but it may be more valuable input. The SDP has their own 'instructors' made up of senior members.
Was that in '03? Because something similar happened last year. One judge gives a perfect 10 for a column movement, and the other gives a 0. They also had two different judging locations for both squad and colorguard last year.
Yes, that was in 03. That happened to the FDT squad basic. I also got mad because they docked a lot off my CG boys because suddenly that year they were not allowed FM22-5 , as the previous year, but were now solely judging on NavyMarine manual.
2 things stand out for those who know.. They used 1903 Springfields and did several ripple movements... USMC uses M1 Garands and does not do the ripple.
sorry about that last comment i sent but, i need to know any good high school army jrotc schools with a good drill team at texas? any help? get me at myspace dot com / 26438816 or on youtube...i need to be in a drill team!!!
It's true, the performance is far from perfect, it's not just the size & complexity of routine - FDT often wins on the strength of the Basic Drill portion of the meet. FDT puts on a great show (death boxes, lateral throws, meat-grinders), but even if we aren't perfect, our Basic Drill usually is. Fish Drill Team wins championship after championship because of long hours of practice and discipline. - FDT Class of '93
Ok, well I was just expressing some balanced understanding towards both parties above. Take get your panties twisted. I hope to drill agongst the best one day. Whoever that is. "Luck is for the unprepared." My squad ldr told me that once. So in that cause see ya'll both out there, NU and A&M.
You also have to remember that this was the 1st fish class to go out and compete. When I was I fish, my CO was part of the last Old Army style of FDT. Back then they had 'special' inducements to perform well. If they didn't bring home 1st, no one would sleep that night.
tsk tsk tsk. Sadly I think one needs to understand that FDT more than likely has a trophy for every cadet at your school. They have been winning national titles since the 60s. Back then though the drilled with a 40-man block. But hey when you win the national title every year, their is no need for a "warm up" when your good to go.
Its simple, perfection in technique and execution. FDT makes zero mistakes plus we have the added help of having the largest competative team. I doubt Norwich could field a team this large. All those little things add up to trophies, but have fun with your case full of 2nd place trophies, we will keep all the 1st place ones while you complain.
That many drillers on one deck is real impressive, but I'd like to comment on the past two comments. The both of you need to blouse your remarks, cause they are hardly proper...
...Maybe there are better jrotc teams, but not with that many drillers. And their performance IS NOT perfect, by any means. Guidon dropped, studder steps, foot placement, timing, yes these little things make it happen, but the Fish weren't perfect. Norwich doesn't have a trophy case, either, thats for schools who compete once a year, they have a hall. But regardless, both of you need to not talk shit. Don't talk none, won't be none. End of story. We'll see what happens. See ya'll at Tulane.
TAMU Class of '98...Good Bull!!!!!! Nothing better than watching FDT perform!

Do you know where the DI's were from? (Parris Island, Pensacola, San Diego, Quantico)?

They used the Aggies in the film "A Few Good Men" as stand-in's for the Marine Silent Drill Platoon. Great stuff. Did the SDP proud, IMHO.

Found out I had multiple copies scattered around my computer, so it wasn't really lost. That's how I did the other version with the background music.

It is a mystery to me how you've gotten first over Norwich these past few years. High school teams drill better than this.
