  • While this tutorial rooted the nook, my nook freezes a lot now.

I sometimes have to hook it up to the pc just for it to restart.

Also, how do I add files to it now? My microsd card and the nook's hard drive aren't accessable through the nook when I plug it in. Sometimes, the nook seems to restart itself over and over after I turn it on, is this the "boot loop"? Just in case I get sick of all this, and don't find it worth it (cause i only want one app). How do I reverse what I've just done?

  • @DeathShok If you have a Micro SD card reader (NOT your Nook), you can recover using the Recovery.img in the description. There is a reason I used a MicroSD card reader in the video.

  • @DeathShok Never mind, I just restored it. Could an msd to sd adapter work just the same as your usb drive? I'm still a bit concerned with the freezing that occurred.

  • @DeathShok is the memory card still in it, if so take it out. Hold down the power button for about 30 seconds, and then plug in the usb cable to your computer (keeping the memory card out).

If That doesn't work you will need to get a microSD to USB adapter and flash the recovery.img

  • @mig019 I actually got it to work fine. Thank you though. Now my only problem is that I don't know how to allow non Android market apps to be used. I downloaded one (Mango reader), and can't find the application settings on it on the simple touch nor the android settings menu.

  • @DeathShok launch NookColor Tools, unchech and rechech "Install non-Market Apps".

You should have a file browser installed "ES File Explorer", Launch that and findmango.apk, click on it, and it should install

  • @mig019 I found and opened Nook Touch Tools (Color tools was not there)

But it won't allow me to do anything because it says it needs "root access".

  • @DeathShok There should be both Nook Touch Tools and NookColor Tools. Also, (Your going to hate me for telling you this) if you do not have root access you are going to have to install the root image that you used. (Welcome to Android)

  • @mig019 So....redo the steps? Or is there something that should already be on the nook that I should activate?

  • Thanks so much for this. IT's very helpful and instruction easy to follow.

  • can u simply hack through nook because when i connect my nook my micro-sd and nook windows show up and i can put files of micro-sd and on nook so can i hack through this way??

  • @whatrugelous I don't recommend it, If you get stuck on a boot loop you will need to reflash the device with the recovery image. Buying a $4 dollar adapter is an easy way to avoid having to adb your nook.

  • For all the guys having issues with gmail, try adding another gmail or create one(click on the Accounts button on gmail app beside refresh button@11:02) This synced my newly created email and when i clicked on my original email it synced that too.. and for the market issue try waiting for 1 day, mine initially gave some error and didnt work but after 5~6 hrs worked perfectly.

  • Whenever i try to run the market it says a server error has occured .retry,or cancel and return to the previous screen

  • With megaupload taken down, the download link to the .img file doesn't work. Can someone upload the SalsichaNooter04.img file for me?

  • @HansNfranZZZ I added TorimNooter to the description, it is pretty much the same except it comes with a lot more apps pre installed.

  • Hi, I tried to post a question on your xda forum thread but I need to post 10 times before I can :( I hope you see this...

I followed your method on the forum exactly however when I load Market it says "No matching content in Android Market".

I also used another method and the exact same thing happened.

Do you know why this is happening and how to fix it?

It is a *Nook Simple Touch* on 1.1

  • @earthabbey Wait 24 hours after rooting, there must be some sort of activation required by google, also don't install the vending.apk unless market is working and you are able to install a app from it.

  • @mig019 I'm not even getting the initial option to change the homescreen to ADW. Did this happened to you? What should I do? :(

  • I got my V 1.1 NST rooted and running some apps, market wasn't working first but weirdly the next day it started working (try waiting a day). Now for some reason, some apps I want to use always crash like the nice Aldiko reader app :(

  • does this actually work on 1.1 if it do wat do i need

  • I can not get Gmail to refresh or the market to work or anything... I can see all the same home screen as you and I can navigate the device, but I can not do anything with it. I can go to You Tube, I signed in, can't load a video.

    What am I doing wrong?

  • @SeventhRule have you tried rebooting, If that doesn't work you can run the root again. You can run the software over itself, without having to reformat the drive.

  • @mig019 @mig019 So here's an UPDATE... I reformatted and started from scratch yesterday. I was then able to load and log into the You Tube app. Gmail still would not sync, and Market just causes the screen to flash a few times and return to home screen. I went to my computer and saw people say wait 24 hrs. I waited 24 hours. Still no Gmail sync. Market still flashes and crashes. And now You Tube ALSO flashes and crashes. Regular browser also fails to work. Opera is the only working app.Help?

  • so i have a question, i tried writing the image on a micro sd card and i think all of the things got on it but m memory card storage went from 4gb to 74 mb. Does that mean the sd card got corrupted or is it suppose to do that.

  • @luster5432 Yes, that is supposed to happen. When you reformat your card with SD formatter you will get back your 4gb.

  • @luster5432 Use Minitool Partition Wizard to fix the partitions on your Micro SD card to get your full capacity back.

  • Thank you so much for all your help so far. Everything worked up until I tried to refresh gmail. Instead of refreshing, it just stays on that screen--"This account is not configured to sync automatically..." Do you have any idea of what I should do? Thanks.

  • @LukeTheTennisMaster does it actually work on 1.1

  • I don't see an "Extract Here" option, only an "Extract All," when I right click on SalsichaNooter. I saw another site say something about downloading winRAR; is this necessary? If so, do you know a safe site to download it from? Thanks.

  • @LukeTheTennisMaster i just added it to the description, make sure not to accidently install a toolbar.

  • I have a similar issue with the Android market (no apps show up), still looking for a solution to that, everything else works as shown, so I am overall very happy with this process. (re sufferingpariah's comment, you cannot install the vending.apk until the items in the market are showing up and you get one, all it does is add the search capability to a functioning market - if you go into color tools and remove application updates to the market, you will be back to the non-functioning market.

  • @Juror222 I'm having the same issue with the market not working, I will post the fix when i get it working.

  • @mig019 I have the same problem. Found a fix yet?

  • @mig019 did you get this fixed? I'm having the same issue. I tried multiple times.

  • I can't get the market to work either, at first no apps showed up, now after installing vending.apk it says "attention a server error has occurred. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen." and I click retry but it just brings the message up again

  • it doesn't show my sd card when i select Restore Virtal Hard Disc Image on a Physical Drive. it doesnt show anything. ive formatted my sd card and tried a second one as well

  • @j0Eg0NZ0 Did you format as fat32

  • @mig019 yep

  • @mig019 close the program and reopen by right clicking, and then select open as Administrator

  • does battery life decrease after it's rooted? Because android is a bitch to most batteries.

  • @gamezonic No, the NST was stuck permanently mid loading screen - but I was able to return it to Overstock very easily, now I have to figure out where to order another one from.... and mig019 - I tried reformatting the SD card and rebooting while plugged in to no avail - I may have found a hidden talent I have for bricking things =P

  • The link to install winImage does not work :/

  • @LukeTheTennisMaster it should be working now.

  • I cannot get the market to work. I've unrooted and rerooted several times.

  • Got my nook today and followed your instructions step by step - at first it turned on but nothing would load - I tried to reset and now my nook never moves past the loading screen - following your vid bricked my nook on the first day I had it =/

  • @mytuba Have you tried powering on with the usb cable, and reformatted your SD.

If that did not work you could always restore, the hack does fail sometimes, but restoring the original image is super simple.

It is incredibly hard to brick a nook touch.

  • @mig019 I rooted my nook simple touch following your directions and all went well until I went to refresh my gmail account and it would not sync. I then lost the ability to open the youtube app as well. I'd like to restore my nook and start over. Can you describe the process to restore. Thank you.

  • @mytuba did u fix it?

  • does the browser function on the nook after rooting it?

  • @wiltuz007 The Opera Browser is automatically installed. I don't know if the old crappy nook browser is still there, but I think it was removed in 1.1

  • Everything is OK but as much as I click YouTube, nothing happens :(

    Please help

  • @alirezayami Have you already formatted the SD card back to Fat32, Have you restarted the Nook?

  • @mig019 I returned Nook. I need Kobo reader :/

  • Market place is not working. I already signed into my account through youtube. Any tips?

  • @techmaster8 Have you installed vending.apk

  • Thank you for the comprehensive video. It really helps to see each part of the process in video format. I'm going to work on this later tonight. Looks simple enough. Did you make a backup prior to rooting?

  • @mapable48 not i didn't backup. Clockwork mod is really simple to install, I did not know it was available for the nook touch until after I uploaded the video. I know from personal experience that messing up a rom flash with android usually results hours of learning how to use ADB with a device and installing the rom that shipped with the device. I highly recommend installing Clockwork mod and backing up your original image.

  • how do you run winimager as administrator?

  • @AtheismOwnsGod instead of opening the program with a left click, right click and a drop down menu will appear. You will see run as administrator as one of the options, with a blue and yellow shield next to it. This is Only on Windows 7/Vista. If you are on XP you don't have to worry about it.

  • you keep to your promises, Thanks!

  • Hey man im a big Youtube Partner and I think this video is awesome. I bought my nook from target on black friday for 80 + they gave me a 30 dollar giftcard. 50 bulks for a nook is not bad and I cancelled my kindle order. I get my nook tomorrow and i am definitely going to try this. Thanks and awesome video.

You should make more nook videos. It can be your specialty and probably even become a YT partner and make money for your videos.
