  • This was covered by The New Seekers, and by The Ray Conniff Singers.

  • look what they done with your song (come to see now)

  • i love this song (:

  • look.

  • carl sagen would have liked your video.

  • I heard that crap that Jay-Z and Kanye West did to Otis Redding's song , and I thought of this song . So I'm dedicating this to Otis. Are his heirs that desperate for money ? Seems to me they should be doing alright based on his record sales and royalies from covers done by legitimate singers and musicians.

  • @LJH70122 I'm definitely not a fan of Jay-Z and i'm not a fan of that song, however what makes them illegitimate musicians? by you hearing them, you obviously got brought back to this old music, and tons of other people got introduced to otis, so what's wrong with that? Old music is returning and reaching the ears of the newer generation. all i see is positivity. Kanye's a brilliant producer, even if his new stuff is wack. music is being revisited and thats what matters.

  • @DJCalCuttah You couldn't be more wrong. First of all , I didn't need anybody to lead me to this music. I lived through that era and have never left it. What makes Kanye and Jay-z illegitimate as musicians is that they are not musicians. Neither plays a musical instrument or sings , which would be required to make one a musician.TALKING over an electronic beat is not music. Where's the music involved ? What key is it in ? It is extremely annoying noise. Not music.

  • thanks janschro for posting this. Love the song, haven't played it in years. She's a good writer/performer and I hope that she's well and happy. Thanks Melanie!

  • I thought her song was fine :)

  • I love Melanie's original version the most of this song. I still remember when I was 6-years old back in Nov. 1969 to Nov. 1970 & 1st riding a bike hearing this on car radios & home stereo systems as I rode along back in my hometown of New Port Richey, FL & definitely this was a song I'd try & sing along to on my bike. It's interesting tonight that I'm having that memory, since I'm having people trying to steel my idea (picking my brain) about a bike ride in Decatur that I've had since 1994.

  • look what they done to my ma ,

  • I wonder if the organ grinder music was perhaps a metaphor for being treated like a trained monkey. I love hering her voice and she is still an amazing artist. check "I tried to die young" lol She is so clever.

  • Thati must be work of our dudes. The sceptic Melanists. Rusty Paulinda

  • Melanie--It hasn't changed. It's all about selling, not the real deal.

  • As a child, my friends and I would walk down the street singing this song as loudly as we could, especially the French lyrics. As if to say to anyone within ear shot, "Look at us, we're singing in French." Our French was awful, our singing even worse. This of course, evoked many a strange look from our neighbors, which was the point of doing this. We annoyed the neighbors, but we loved the song, and had a lot of laughs. We were an odd bunch now that I give it more thought, Odd, but amusing.

  • @twowaystreet101 Thank you for the memory!

  • I like the song, but I don't like how she says "le seul chose". It's not a matter of accent, I can't blame her for not having the "right" accent either in French, whatever that means. It's a matter of grammar. It should be "la seule chose". That is, la instead of le.

  • i have this album too

  • Ooh... Space!

  • Awesome song, awesome lady, nuff said! : )

  • Still play my 33 from the original ,great recording, as some of you said nothing has changed, just try and keep a small part of yourself.

  • pure magic, such a deep and wonderful voice, and the lyrics will fit the most of us.

  • by far better than anything ive heard come out of record companies these last few years-and im 15!

  • A great song,I wonder what it is all about.

  • @christina1276 She's complaining about how studios can butcher songs and their meanings just because of what the studio wants or thinks the public wants rather than allowing the artist to express their music how they see fit

  • @EdenJAM and @christina1276 : she wrote "Brand New Key" (can't post links, see other videos) which was turned into "Brand New Combine Harvester" by the Wurzels....

I think we are all still wondering what they did to her song! :-)

  • Melanie looked into the future and saw what Hilltop Hoods had in store for "People in the Front Row."

  • amazing lyrics! despite the carnival type of music, the words are sad, forlorn.

and very fitting to what's happening to today's music.....

  • @MissPopeyes22 I would say what is happening to today's wold. What have they done to our brain?

  • @MissPopeyes22 I would say what is happening to today's wold. Look at what they have done to our brains?

  • Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma - Melanie [Queens, New York] - 1970 - "...was the first of her many musical broadsides against the music business, and its wit doesn't blunt its wounded passion." - Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits of Melanie (Buddha Records)-1999. NOTE: This is the only compilation that came off the original master tapes making it the BEST to get.

  • 9 idiots.

  • @gullsahkara

    really?

  • I've been looking all over to find Deep Down Low by Melanie!! I listened to her for years

I thought she was singing my life!!!Thanks for the video!!!

  • Melanie and Peggy Lee give me the FEVER for classic tunes. My taste in music is very ecclectic.Mellow to screaming rock and roll, I like it all....almost.

  • magnifiquement belle cette voix,j'aime depuis que j'avais 17ans

  • Thumbs up if you got hooked on Melanie because of the HP baby commercial.

  • @Feeaceness I got hooked on Melanie in 1970

  • IT'S TOO LATE TO APLOGIZE. IT'S TOO LATE TOO SAY YOUR SORRY. IT'S TOO LATE. IT'S MUCH TOO LATE.

  • How prescient...

    watch?v=kAh_A7N3_mc

  • time to send in the clowns

  • @captainlockheed214 Good grief! The Melanie Safka voice would be superb with the Sondheim song "Send In The Clowns", As a matter of fact she'd be wonderful as a character in a Sondheim musical. Never did think of it before, but your reference to "time to send in the clowns" made for a great thought thread. Good thinkin'!!

Have to check and see if she's ever sung/recorded Sondheim.

  • The song is just so great, and your vid is just awesome - you did a wonderful job. Thanx for bringing this here. I love Melanie - always will.

  • she has such an awesome voice and her lyrics are amazing

  • "L'information n'est pas la connaissance. La connaissance n'est pas la sagesse. La sagesse n'est pas la vérité. La vérité n'est pas la beauté. La beauté n'est pas l'amour. L'amour n'est pas la musique. La musique est la meilleure des choses."

Frank Zappa. Extrait de : Music is the best

  • Okay....I swear this is the last one. I remember skipping to elementary school singing this asinine song and butchering the French...Ils ont changee ma chanson, maaaaaaaaaaaaa (like a billy goat..)

  • an american" Edith Piaf"

  • Melanie was a hippy in Nyack NY when this and brand new key were hits. As kids we loved to see her around town in her jeannie clothes. But 'candles in the rain' about the woodstock phenomenon was screeching goose bumps, hear it, more and anthem than CSNY doing joanie mitchell's woodstock. Thanks mel from the Nyack kids all growd up

  • wish i could find a real good book--then i won,t have to look up, at YOU!

  • Isn't this song about an abortion?

  • Que maravillosa cancion.

  • thanks

  • That's a good reason to like someone's music. Their name is the same as your ex wife. If I followed that rule, I would like the music of Joan Rivers.

  • my first wife was named Melanie

I so love all of your songs Melanie

    Earl

  • this is beautiful. The song, The images, it is all beautiful. They loved your song

  • Anyone else see Melanie's visage cleverly photoshopped into the galactic scenes in this vid? Very subtle and AWESOME work! Kudos to the creator of this vid.

  • A friend said something today that made me start singing this song. I had completely forgotten about it over the years! I had to come and listen to it as soon as I got home! Isn't youtube great?!?!

  • I'd forgotten this since 1982, but 2 yrs ago buried ma wee bru, it was him that brought this music to me up north from London. Awesome song and artist.

  • This song puts me in the mood for some Quaker Oatmeal.

  • Great experience--dancing with my grown daughter while Melanie sang this live, & meeting her after the concert! Check out the new vid for Close To It All!

  • Song of freedom. Choice and responsibility.

    There is still time.

  • Nice song from a long past, reflects some warm memories from childhood.

  • damn i thought this was recent and i got all excited that perhaps music was getting good again. but then i saw the whole 1970 thing. oh well :/. bitchin song!

thanks mum for making me crazy for that sound, haha

  • Ha ha this melany song is considered better than anything that mozart ever wrote in hungary where they all think that captain kirk and spock and the enterprise are real

  • Thanks a lot..great song

  • Love the images

  • This is one of my all time fav songs, I love her voice and the words are so good

  • That The Song!

    Sweet, sweet Melanie

  • Maybe the best song of the world!!! I,m not a man of emotional songs - being a rock drummer and a R. Blackmore fan -, but this hit is fantastic! Both the melody and the lyrics.

    Thank You very much!

    Best wishes from Hungary

  • Agree totally with your philosophy.

  • Awesome lady

  • ''...wish i could find a good book to live in...i'd never had to come and look at.......lalalalaaaaaa!''

  • love it =)

  • Melanie Safka's song, "Brand New Key" was recorded in 1965, in a little studio in Chicago, on North Wells Street: I know. I engineered it for her auditionings.

  • big liar

  • Lol I kinda think he is too....

  • wiki says it was recorded for her 1971 album, "Gather Me" '65...'71 its all the same..lol

  • I have always loved this song. Didn't influence my politics or lifestyle. Sometimes I would sing my children to sleep with it. LOL

  • beautifully put .succinct .enjoy your days on the planet..life is to short for conspiracy silliness.with the fabulous melanie singing ,who needs that. great song.

  • oh god i love this song

  • The world was built on conspiracy. What does this have to do with the song? I believe she was lamenting the poor mix on her first album, they took her beautiful music and made it sound like a circus. Her later albums had some of these songs redone the way she liked.

  • THEY??? Da darfste nich ausgerechnet Ma fragen; :):):)

  • what ever you guys... this is still a great song! go melanie!

  • Totally. What he said. Peace. ོའནི ཕའདཻ མུཐ

  • Listen to you lot, i bet you all think that theres conspiracys all over the place and that Tony Blair and George Bush are high up in this stone masons and all that crap. Again who cares.

  • Do you mean FREEmasons?

  • You got that right, zuesthelessor!!

  • Who Cares... the worst singers are the ones who use thier fame to push thier usually stupid political opinons. If she worships the devil, thats her business, let her do in private and as long as she doesnt damage anyone... nobody should really care!

  • @Vicky

    Me as well ;-)

  • I sooooo love this song!!

  • She's still very entertaining.

  • I like this rendition very much Thanks for posting it.

  • This song could well be refering to some of my videos. LOL. CHEERS. AZ.
