The best joke is something so obvious that people overlook it, but is pointed out by someone like carlin, and people are forced to laugh at their own ignorance/stupidity. Carlin was a master of this. and a lot of it wasn't just his politics or religion, but thinks we all do, but nobody talks about, etc.

George Carlin basically got his entire backbone from Robert Anton Wilson. RA. Wilson is the one who wanted children to be taught from early on to question everything, and to be "general agnostic". Carlin just takes RA. Wilson's material and make it comedy, basically.
