also the melbourne storm here in vic enjoys better crowds than the sydney nrl teams but still no one gives a shit about rugby, its all about the footy here. Even Melbourne Victory is more popular than the rugby. Melbourne is the sporting capital and everyone just loves to attend sports..
We have the best stadiums: the MCG (Capacity, 100,000)and Etihad (56,000) and now AAMI park (30,000) for A league and Rugby.
@macopowa Melbourne averaged a crowd figure of 14, 246 last year. Less than Manly, Canterbury, St George-Illawarra, Parramatta, Souths, Roosters & Wests Tigers.
Melbourne is only the sporting capital because of its infrastructure. Every sport that is played in Melbourne is also played in Sydney & Brisbane.
Melbournians are draconian in their thought process of sport. If it's not AFL, it's not worth it. It's not even an international sport so it will never rate as highly as league.
@hsvsv8 mate i am sorry, but you have no idea. I am a rugby fan but AFL is 3 times bigger the league. to build this infrastructure in the first place you need the money, which comes from the fans. just have a look at their memberships- Collingwood/ Hawthorn had 60,000 members last year. Plus every time origin is played down there it is a sell out, they will watch anything.
@mindilmudcrabs Actually, infrastructre has nothing to do with sport at all. It's called good city planning.
They will watch anything, but they're absorbed in AFL. Rugby League gets no favours in the viewing times alotted by channel 9 in Victoria. Whereas other states are more even with the viewing times of different sports.
I like AFL & I go for the Swans, but people need to face the fact that it is a 1 country sport. League is worldwide & is even the national sport of PNG.
@macopowa 2 states? Try 3. NSW, Qld & Victoria. With a 4th state in WA getting their Reds team back soon. Compare the number of countries that play the sports.
AFL - 1 country.
Rugby League - 30+ countries.
AFL only enjoys resounding success in Victoria. Perth & Brisbane are 1 town teams & Perth doesn't compete with the NRL. Sydney now has 2 sides in the comp, but up against 9 league teams, they'll continue to be beaten in NSW. The Lions are a joke compared to the Broncos.
Perth is footy crazy they have two team its just like victoria there.. Same goes for South Australia, Tassie and the Northern Territory and indigenous areas..
Footy is pretty much the number 1 sport in the country.
AFL has an average attendance of 40,-50 thousand and regurlaly plays infront of 80-90 thousand plus when either Collingwood, Richmond, Essendon or Carkton play. The nrl's average is about 10-15k.. The a league even enjoys better crowds..
@macopowa I'm rusty on my AFL knowledge. AFL & NRL have been competing for #1 sport in the country for years now. The AFL does draw a bigger average crowd, but they are playing games on 50-100k capacity grounds. The biggest league ground is ANZ, which is a tick over 80k. The average size is around 25-30k. As far as ratings go, the NRL flogs the AFL each year. 1 Origin game alone outrates an entire round of AFL. Its the #1 sporting rivalry worldwide.
@iiSuPeRSoNiCxX he did alright considering he is playing at the highest level in a sport he isint used to, but yeah he still wasnt great compared to most afl players
@nugngi Jealous of what? The only thing to be jealous of is that Hunt gets paid $1mil a year to be one of the worst players on the field every game. The guy is a complete and utter spud.

I can't wait til Hunt sees the light & comes back to the NRL. He is a talented athlete that is wasting his skills in AFL.
The AFL can keep Folau though. Overrated & overpaid pussy.
