I agree responsiveness is key and so is control. Sure the AF is fast and the UI isn't sluggish, but I hate that PASM is not on the mode dial and no direct access to change aperture, shutter and ISO. Also, why not use the standard Nikon hotshoe? Even the P&S P7000 has it. It seems to me Nikon deliberately crippled this camera to avoid cannibalizing their DSLRs and it's expensive to boot.
OTOH, the Pany G3 has a bigger sensor, more features, better controls, and more lenses. It's also cheaper.
@iflipmac Aperture and shutter speed are changed manually with the rocker and spin dial on the back of the camera. It is easier to shoot manual on this camera than with my D3100. This camera is not for everyone. Personally, I enjoy it very much. I use it daily.
If you're shooting sync speed at a decently small aperture, with low ISO, you shouldn't face any problems with having lights on... Therefore eliminating focus issues. Especially for the V1.
@djembedrummer Mechanical shutter on the V1 syncs at 1/250th. This is unrelated to the camera's ability (or non-ability) to focus quickly in low light.
@TheSnapChick Just wondering: have you ever looked through a NEX-7 or Alpha 65/77 viewfinder :)? (Don't worry, no, don't want to compare it with the V1 viewfinder now, just wondering, if you know that EVF :) ).
Hello Gorgeous! I was wondering what camera would you recommend for taking really fast pictures in dark areas? (I sell real estate and want to be able to walk into dark rooms/areas and quickly take the pictures and go to next one instead of taking a picture, waiting for it to recharge and then taking another one) THANKS!
I want this camera, I need this camera, resisting from buying this camera because it's just too expensive... Want my DSLR for Professional shoots, need new lenses etc... but this would be so nice to have when out for a social with my friends... especially with being able to bounce flash with the Speedlight...
@leo140485 It's a brilliant second camera for pro shoots. Using your telephoto on your DSLR... capture the wide angles with the V1. See, now you absolutely need it! ;)
you don't need your studio to be dark if you are shooting at sync speed. ambient light won't affect... You didn't use the flash in the studio. You use it as a trigger for the bees. can you please do some with just the flash please.
@TheSnapChick 1/250 s, f/5.6+ at ISO 100 will render all but very bright internal lighting irrelevant. And obviously, adjusting the shutter speed will not effect the flash exposure.
@benox345 Agreed, but I don't like other lighting messing with the color temperature or exposure at all. I can certainly crank up the lighting. My DSLRs don't need this, but the V1 does.
@Snapchick Could you do a shootout between the Nikon 1 & the Sony NEX? I'm still contemplating on the purchase, although from your videos, Nikon has made a new niche of cameras - the idiotproofed? I'm from the DSLR camp but I think the 1 would really hold itself when you go travelling, being in crowds, or even public places where you are seen suspicious holding a DSLR (read: terrorist activity)...the camera has its quirks...but the same can be said when micro Four-Thirds first came out, no?
Thank you for posting a video that really tells the truth about the Nikon 1 series! So many videos (and magazine reviews) just don't seem to get where Nikon are coming from. I bought the J1 today in black with the 10-30mm kit lens and it's really amazing. Do any of the critics own it? No! They seem like frightened little puppies because Nikon have upset the market with something different! Thanks for telling it like it is!
I use my D3S everyday. And I've been doing this for years. It's what I do for a living. The V1 would be much more understandable at reasonable price. Nearly $1,000.00 for it! Joke is on us! Nikon will have to lower the price, if anybody in the consumer market buy this thing!
I just find the sensor waaaay too small, and being used to my D2X with SB-900 and 17-55mm, I've learnt to just put up with big cameras. The mirrorless system doesn't suit me.
I just don't see the point of these cameras. Sure they're more compact than DSLRs but not enough to make them pocketable once you start adding flashes, lenses, etc. You get less manual control and performance than a DSLR and yet it costs the same as a D5100. Sony came out the NEX series first and I think Nikon failed to respond to Sony with these.
@addictabledisaster It's sexy, but I don't have one. I'm a bit partial to cameras with interchangeable lenses, but I'm also certain that I would enjoy the X10.
Low Sensor size also means no bokeh effects. Also I find the guide number 8,5 quite low on the SB-N5 flashlite, inbuilt camera flashes in DSLRs (which are much smaller) usually have 12. The Sony NEX has a smaller guide number (7) but is also physically smaller than the SB-N5. I have to admit I like the manual control on the SB-N5, which the Sony NEX flash do not have (they have just flash compensation). For DSLR users in need of a small second camera, I still think the NEX is far superior.
@Lofote "No bokeh" is a strong statement. I remember hearing the same thing when DX was first introduced. I have no problems with the flash - it will light a dark room and is great for bouncing. Popup flashes on DSLR's only give you direct flash and if you fire one at full power, the light is very harsh. I read all of the specs, but I don't make judgments until I have used the gear, which, in this case, I have.
@TheSnapChick Ok, "less bokeh" ;)... The fact that you can bounce it is of course a big plus for the flash, the guidenum 7 flash that is delivered with the Sony NEX can't do that (neither can the DSLR built in ones). There is a NEX flash with guide number 20 however, which is AFAIK cheaper than the Nikon SB-N5 one, stronger (guide number 20) and can be bounced. And that is one of the things that is bad about the Nikon 1: its far too expensive, they try to sell it only via their name. Cya :)
@TheSnapChick Oh by the way, with DX you mean APS-C sensors, yes? I hate company specific names for standardized stuff ;)... Anyways, the crop factor between 35mm and APS-C is nothing against 35mm against that 2,7x crop factor, that the 1 series has. Bokeh *IS* far less possible out of pure physical reasons. If you don't want bokeh for a picture and want a lot of focus depth of course a smaller sensor is a good thing ;)... (just try to get a lot of focus depth in lets say a Hasselblad ;) ).
@Lofote Sure, and the V1 is not a tiny DSLR. It has its pros and cons like everything else. It was a lot of fun last weekend at the Grand Canyon last weekend and very easy to carry around,
@ClatteredTorso Sure, the 1 series has a few features, the most innovative thing is Phase AF inside the sensor, which I believe will become the future in EVIL cameras some time. The fps speed is great. So there are a few needs where this camera blows the others away. But those needs are special, for most needs the NEX is simply the better camera, better image quality, less noise (due to its sensor same as D7000) and costs less. Nikon is too late and too expensive with the 1s!
@acatalan76 No. The V1 much much much better in low light than the D2x. Maximum rated ISO in the D2x is ISO 800, which is extremely noisy. You can go above that on the D2x, but it's not a pretty site. Sensor size is not everything.
@acatalan76 In fact the high ISO noise is one of the things that has been improved EXTREMELY in the last 4 years, it is actually the main thing that all companies have been able to extremely improve. Just compare a Sony NEX-5 or a Sony Alpha 580 against a Sony Alpha 100 - a camera that is 4 years older. The Alpha 100 was hardly usable even in ISO 800, nowadays ISO 800 is nothing. The D2X is even older - a camera from 2004. So even a Nikon V1 can easily beat it in High ISO when comparing noise.
@175myles Honestly, if I were planning to use a heavy lens and larger flash with this camera (which it will not support), I would use a D3100 instead.
@TheSnapChick, Fair point. Now back to the V1, is there a chance you could do a pocket test with it and some of its accessories? I have been looking at the P7100 as a carry around pocket camera, and it slides in my pocket under my wallet very nicely. (I am a manual control freak and the Newby(Auto) setting disappoints me thoroughly.)
@TheSnapChick, I have thought about it, but I really don't like not having a view finder, I have tried it with my Mums Sony cyber shot and I find the screen very awkward when trying to get a stable shot in lower light without the flash. I like the Viewfinder even if it is very small. And the V1 has the bonus of the flash gun which I love using.

I find this camera to be fast and practical. Everyone is looking for something a little bit different, and I have more fun carrying the V1 around than most cameras that I have used. It is not a DSLR replacement for professional work, but is very capable.
