Yes, to the normal human eye, Gabriel just appears as a "Man" of the church. But for the spiritually sensitive like Angela (later in the movie), Isabel, and Constantine, they can all see Gabriel for what "he" is.

I love the difference between the Constantine movie and the actual Hellblazer series; in the comic series, Constantine goes to talk to Gabriel upon being advised to do so by Ellie (a half breed demon, she's in a lot of the deleted scenes on the DVD, and the one who says "holy water?" later on in the movie), and Gabriel's referred to as 'The Snob'. xP

Actually, in the movie, Gabriel is a half-breed. In the Constantine universe half-breeds are defined as angels and demons that can exist on the Earth plane and influence mortals. They take on mortal form in order to do so. Balthazar (Gavin Rossdale) is also a half-breed.

Now I haven't seen the whole movie, so I can't really put this in the "their context", but I think that Gabriel here is really complacent, legalistic, insincerely faithful and latent-ly spiteful. It's perfect for satirizing those modern day pharisees among us.
Plus! Tilda's so gorgeously androgynous. Check out her movie "Orlando." She plays a girl and a boy in that one. :)

I love the difference between the Constantine movie and the actual Hellblazer series; in the comic series, Constantine goes to talk to Gabriel upon being advised to do so by Ellie (a half breed demon, she's in a lot of the deleted scenes on the DVD, and the one who says "holy water?" later on in the movie), and Gabriel's referred to as 'The Snob'. xP

Actually, in the movie, Gabriel is a half-breed. In the Constantine universe half-breeds are defined as angels and demons that can exist on the Earth plane and influence mortals. They take on mortal form in order to do so. Balthazar (Gavin Rossdale) is also a half-breed.
