Hello and thank you everyone who's been leaving comments here. Some have made me laugh and some were inspiring to read! So thank you and I look forward to more comments!
My dad was the Mr. Miyagi of my life--consistently calm, full of talent, impatient only when he thought you could do better, but always encouraging and very wise. RIP dad--your lessons will always stay with me.
I think people focus on wax on and wax off because of the way he said it. They mean good when they say it, but it does sound like something else when you slur the words a bit. But most people mean well who understood the concept.which refers to "anything that's overly repetetive and seems to be pointless..might turn out to have a very important point after all, as it did in the movie."
Why do people fixate on the "wax on, wax off"? You never see people doing sand the floor when they rip on martial arts :p Great scene though, this, a real classic
@Shindai To answer your question it was always an inside joke. there was a commercial years ago EVEN BEFORE this movie came out about I think it was turtle wax or something and they would "Emphasize" in the advertisement Easy to use just wax on and wax off and your car will be the shiny new vehicle it was when you just bought it" One later remark was made if you were a child of the 80's you knew the TRUE meaning of wax on and wax off I.E. Blocking in karate

I would rather watch this movie before the new one, even though I love Jackie Chan, nothing beat the classic and nothing beat Mr Miyagi.
