The SS was over $160 billion in 2006, including accruing interest. The only way congress can avoid spending the SS surplus is to balance the non SS budget. Then the surplus could be used to buy up bonds from investors.. You can't put over $160 billion in a mattress, and you can't balance the budget by cutting wasteful spending. The idea of put putting the surplus in a "reserve account" is just smoke and mirrors. The Democrats lack the courage propose roll back of the Bush tax cuts.
