can you use standard cutting pads with these?

Yes, but I feel like you get more control with the smaller pads. Try standard and upgrade if you cut a lot of the On the Edge Dies.

I would venture to say that Tim distressed the houses after he cut them, but before detaching them from the die cut card.

Ok I am going to try one more cutter based on your advice. I can't tell you how many cutters I own trying to get a straight edge so frustrating.
