  • all banners burn in the demon filled pits of hell muwhahahaha

  • AWESOME

  • I think you are going to sign just a little bit more then he did

  • Yes, Oscar Wilde mention!

  • I am of the honest opinion that a fiction author that has never had one of their books banned/challenged isn't writing honest books.

  • I don't understand how anyone can ban books in the first place, but how can you even ban a book that you've *never read*?

  • So many books i need to read.

  • And thus Song Wednesday was born. . .

  • I'm in book club at my high school, and we all read a banned book basically to be blatantly offensive to promoters of banning books... and I forgot where this was going. Well, I like that you're addressing the issue. I guess. I think once a book has been banned, it goes up like ten levels on the book-awesome scale.

  • They ban Harry Potter?

    I'm outraged!

  • 0:45 thats what he said before the fault in our stars!

  • Comment removed

  • I've started watching all of the videos from the beginning and I'd never seen this one before. But I am retroactively super angry! The Bermudez Triangle is one of my favorite books. I read it before I new about nerdfighteria or anything about Maureen Johnson. I love the book and it has been invaluable in my life. I can't believe someone tried to ban it!

  • I saw City of Bones in the background on his shelf. It reminded me that I'm only on chapter 2 of it and have been since sometime in 2010 or early-to-mid-2011. :(

  • Haha, now YOU'VE signedmore books than Neil Gaiman ever has.

  • In answer to "Are you ever going to get that right?" No, four years later and still, no.

  • I came to comment about how he's signed 150000 now, but then it's the two top comments.

  • So happy you mentioned No Exit! That's my favorite play EVER!

  • I've been in a production of No Exit, so I flinched when you mentioned it. That play...THAT PLAY. I can't even.

  • I live in Oklahoma. I've read The Burmudez Triangle.

  • 1:42 and numerous other points... JOHN GREEN OWNS CITY OF BONES!!!!

  • I think past John will be happy to know what future John is in the process of signing far more books than Neil Gaimen. :)

  • Last semester, I quoted this video in an essay on the stupidity of banning books. I passed with flying colors.

  • Its really funny watching this after the signing psychosis videos...

  • They would ban harry potter from their

Librarys!!! Idiots also john i think

Its safe to say uve signed more books then neil gaimen

  • [John gets date wrong]

"Am I ever gonna get that right?"

    Very infrequently, John. Very infrequently.

  • French you Llama, the first time my state is mentioned in a Vlogbrothers video and its about how we stupidly banned a novel featuring gay characters. At least I'm from Tulsa. Damn Bartlesville.

  • city of bones!! one of my favorite books ever :]

  • watching them all!

  • 2011 John gets his wish, sighing tons of books.

  • can i like this to the power of awesome?

  • There's a copy of the Bermudez Triangle in my library, and I'm in junior high. hmph.

  • @LexiTheShortOne this video is from 2007..it's now 2011..things change.

  • banning books that have gay characters is like banning all books that talk about muggles at hogwarts...

  • I could've used this video for my censorship project last year...dammit.

  • AHHHH City of Bones. One of the best books ever!

  • "Neil Gaiman signed more books on that day in Helena, Montana than I've signed in my entire career!" Not anymore...

  • Further proof that Oklahoma sucks. BLECH. Not all Oklahomans are that lame, I promise.

  • Comment removed

  • Banning a book for any reason is lame.

  • Oh my. This video made me slightly ashamed to live so close to Bartlesville.

  • On the subject of book signing - NOT ANYMORE!!!

  • wonder how many books neil gaiman signed... well it wasnt 150,000

  • "Neil Gaiman signed more books on that day than I've signed in my entire career."

Haha, not any more John. Not any more.

  • woo! start of song Wednesdays!!

  • To think, you'll have signed 150000 + copies by January. You go John!

  • Just wait until you have to sign every pre-ordered copy of the Fault in Our Stars. I think you'll out sign Niel Gaimond, at least out-do how many he signed on that one day.

  • herher i see city of bones. trololol

  • "Neil Gaiman signed more books on that day than I've signed in my entire career." This will soon be a lie. Just like Vlogbrothers not becoming as popular as Ze Frank was a lie.

    Oh, the future.

  • city of bones behind you. good book.

  • It just means they will go to another source and read it... I know finding out that someone banned the book makes me want to read it more.

  • Wow, the birth of song Wednesday :D

  • Hey hey, ho ho, those book bans have gotta go!

  • ...Will Grayson, Will Grayson...

  • City of bones?!?! I LOVE THAT BOOK!!!

  • no, no you're never going to get that right :)

  • So they're gonna ban Harry Potter? Cause....

  • he has the city of bones omg thank u john

  • I spy City of Bones.. Cassie Clare FTW! :3

    (Also, you FTW John).

  • The Picture of Dorian Gray! 'There's no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written or badly written.'

  • Would someone like to inform me of when freedom of speech does not apply to what you write? Because I'm pretty sure it does which therefore applies to literature. What's on television isn't being banned. Teenagers are supposed to be exposed to different and ideas and beliefs. What's worse is that it's a high school. In high school, you are supposed to be learning about the world. Not just the rated G version of it.

  • But I love this book!

  • @animeotaku I agree with you

  • I know that book banning is horrible, and most of my favorite books are banned books; But I would like to move to ban a book. Particularly the edition of Huck Finn some guy is trying to publish because it has racial slurs in it. Huckleberry Finn is a snapshot of what the world was actually like back then and if you don't like being known that waybecause you live in the South, then move! Stop trying to change history and Twain's fabulous story. It's perfect the way it is.

    -Vivian

  • @animeotaku I agree that's a crap thing to do, but I don't agree that the book should be banned. No book should EVER be banned for any reason.

  • I'd count it among my successes if I had a book banned. Sure, it would suck to have less people reading it, but it feels like something I would be proud of, because I feel like people ban books because they are afraid of the things within the pages. To have written something that strikes a nerve with those scared of positive change? I want to do that, because I see it as making a difference.

  • If they banned all books with gay characters, where would the Harry Potter books be today?

  • Yeah they shouldn't ban books. Sorry I'm actually more supportive of not banning books but I couldn't help but notice City of Bones behind John, which incidentally also has a gay character in it, but still is an awesome book. That whole series is awesome.

  • That is the most stupid reason to ban a book im glad that doesnt happen at my school

  • Oh book banners. Stop banning the books. Freedom of speech. Etc.

I don't have time to argue how stupid book bans are, I'm just going to say this. If you don't want your child to read, lets say, Huckleberry Finn, then tell them that you don't want them to read that. Why should the rest of the people have to suffer if you don't want your children to read certain things? Limitations people. Be a PARENT or we'll have Fahrenheit451.

Now excuse me, writing two stories about homosexuality and such.

  • In John's book Will Grayson, Will Grayson, I'd say about half of the characters are gay. I'm straight. IT'S STILL A GOOD BOOK.

Books tend to get banned for completely IDIOTIC reasons.... Harry Potter banners were worried about witchcraft and about how the golden trio often breaks the rules. THAT IS NOT A GOOD REASON.

  • Only in America... -_-.

So, do they allow fairytales, where the dragon/witch/monster dies in the end? I mean, it's certainly worse to kill than to love...

  • Thank God it doesn't explicitly say that Dumbledore is gay in Harry Potter's books!

  • Ban will grayson WIll Grayson and harry potter bitch ass

  • What? WHAT?! I'm 12-years-old and I know that banning something because there are homosexual ppl in it, especially if the ppl it's directed towards are above 13, is sexist. Er, sexual orientation...ist...

    I guess...?

  • @CarolineandEmmaShow I think the word you're looking for is homophobic :] and you're completely right, but a lot of the rule makers in America seem to be homophobic.

  • @xtiredxemox Thnx 4 the info!

  • @CarolineandEmmaShow its 'homophobic'

    and i agree

  • Going to ban Harry Potter under that same principle that a character's gay?

  • "The Bermudez Triangle ...in your pants." - Parker's greatest wish

  • Comment removed

  • @bluepinly45 I love house of night! And honestly- thats not the worst of them, our library has the it girl series, which is perhaps the trashiest book series I have ever even attempted to read

  • Dear John,

No, you won't ever get it right.

    Sincerely, People of the future.

  • CITY OF BONES? I SEE CITY OF BONES! I love those books.

  • In my library you can rent the film loving annabelle. :)

And do they have harry potter in their library? Would they ban that now knowing that dumbledor is gay?

  • House of night is in my library... it's pretty dirty

  • harry potter series have gay charecter(s)

    Dumbledor

  • I see City of Bones in the background

    This makes me happy :)

  • Book banning is bull shit

  • Dumbledore is a homosexual character and you canNOt ban Dumbledore. Argument = won.

  • Looks like Oklahoma will be wanting to ban Harry Potter, too.

  • I live in OK (unfortunately) and yes, that's going to get a book banned in bartlesville. Yeah my state sucks.

  • Comment removed

  • He forgot The Mortal Instruments.

  • If they didn't/don't allow books into their library because they have gay characters, what about Harry Potter. Though it's not mentioned in the book, everyone knows about Dumbledore now :)

  • Thus song wednesday begins!

  • @xxItalianfFlagxx BTW your comment made my day! :D

  • Banning books because it has homosexuals in it is just wrong! At my school we have a whole section on homosexual/ transgender fiction. I think we are about the most pro-homo school ever other schools should just sit back and take notes!

  • So is this the beginning of song wednesdays?

  • JK Rowling revealed that Dumbledore was gay... So will that school now ban all Harry Potter books?

  • 1:54? I'm reading "The City of Bones" right now!! :D

  • so are they going to ban Harry Potter?

  • I'm re-watching all the Brotherhood 2.0 videos, and I saw this. Banning every book with a gay character would suck. That includes Harry Potter, and that's just wrong.

Plus, Will Grayson, Will Grayson is just kinda amazing. And it should never be banned.

  • you'd think it was mean when he made a joke of Maureen's book, but "Looking for Alaska in your pants" is wayyyyy more funny

  • I like your passion John. And your evil smile at the end of the video when you say you've got their numbers.

I don't get this book banning thing. Why don't parents just stop their kids reading the books if they object to them? No need to stop everyone reading them. On the other hand. I grew up without a libriary at school. It didn't kill me. My parents just bought me any book I wanted (within reason) and told me which books in the house were not fit for my eyes at which age.

  • THIS WAS MY BIRTHDAY =)

  • @ThatGirlRuth thats exaclaly what i was thinking!!!

  • Would they ban Harry Potter? Dumbledore was technically a gay character.

  • @ThatGirlRuth Why do ppl say Dumbledore is a gay character? I have seen this in comment of various vidoes and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. I've read all the books atleast twice. Did I miss something?

  • Comment removed

  • This school would probably ban John's new book "Will Grayson, Will Grayson" based on the same premise then

  • Dear People Who Ban Books,

    You suck.

    Sincerly,

    Nerdfighteria

  • @xxItalianFlagxx Especially John Green books.

  • book banning sucks. hopefully when i become a certified library i can help the nerdfighter cause from the inside.

  • Diary of Anne frank

  • add "will grayson will grayson" to your list.......

  • I spy City of Bones :) I love that series

  • Okay, so I just had a little spazzy moment. I just realized that John and I both have "City of Bones" on our bookshelves. I don't know why it made me so happy... but it did. :) Granted, I bought it long after John... but either way, it makes me feel I have good taste in books. :D

  • Yes!!! Nerfighters FTW!!!! Banning a book because it has a homosexual character is ridiculous.

  • That is so gay (see what I did there?? lulz).

No but seriously, that's just stupid. And if ANY library banned The Picture of Dorian Gray, I would personally hunt down and slap whoever did it.

  • It feels so good when you let it out... in your pants

  • I think it's rediculas that they do it! I've read a cuple of manga with homosexual caratchers, and I'm 10!

  • I can see the "City of Bones" book that is located next to your ear thanks to your new "filming spot." My respect for you has just gone up a notch. :)

  • That sucks. I almost had to go to that school. Bartlesville was a very small town and for reasons that I do not understand, completely against gay people. I'm glad I moved.

  • Wow. I think maybe they're just trying to ignore the reality that gay people exist! That's frustrating! When will people learn to accept the humanity in all humans?? Seriously. That's been the entire course of human societal improvement! Don't stop now! Gays are humans as much as we are human!

  • Correction: *this is the birth of song wednesdays!

  • the bible

  • @pete275 what does that mean

  • @jesusfreaklol1 it means "the book" in latin, but also (I had to watch the video again to reply because I had no idea what my comment meant either :p ) it means the bible contains gay characters too so it should be on John's list.

  • I have to agree. Banning a book simply because it has homosexual characters is a very illegitimate reason.

  • The picture of Dorian Gray amazed me :)

    Oscar Wilde. *sigh*

  • isnt dumbledor's character in the harry potter books gay?

  • Yes he was. I know this only because in when J.k. Rowling was editing the screenplay she had to cut a line that said something about Dumbeldor liking a girl. He is still so awesome.

    DFTBA

  • ROCK!

  • i agree but you read to many books i cant read books its not fun for me lol

  • There is no such thing as reading too many books.

  • (Note - We don't laugh because of any homophobicness. We laugh because we're amazed Fitzgerald was sly and sneaky enough to sneak a homosexual reference into a book written in the time period that it was. In response to which we always say "Fitzgerald, you dog...")

  • You forgot to mention "The Great Gatsby".

My friends and I still laugh about it XD

  • Yet another reason to be ashamed of living in oklahoma. :(

Hank. John. One of you, adopt me and get me out of here.

  • In my school's library, we have multiple romance books, with rather graphic scenes of...*BLUSHIE* well scenes. We indeed have an entire wall dedicated to imagination porn. And yet books like Harry Potter in your pants. (for witchcraft) and City of Bones in you pants. (for Gay Relations) and Breaking Dawn in your pants. (for implied future underage relations between Renesme and Jacob) are put grudgeingly one a shelf in the far back. WHY?! (You don't need to answer I was just being dramatic.)

  • Nice City of Bones.

    You are totally right.

  • I see City of Bones(in your pants) behind your shoulder!

    Book banning is despicable.

  • I agree with you

  • thats so stupid i agree with u

  • I wonder if the author knew that the man who discovered the island of Bermuda was Juan Bermudez? (...in 1503...he was Spanish...but the island was settled by the British in 1609)

    what a fun fact...

  • I live near Bartlesville...this is SO embarrassing

  • I JUST read that book! I think it is CRAZY to ban books!!

  • i absolutely loved The Burmudez Triangle. It was a good book with well written gay characters and I haven't seen anything like that since The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I am so tired of this homophobic world! Every single person has felt attracted to the same sex at some point, right?

  • No, I have never been attracted to a man at any point in my life. And I feel a distinction has to be made between homophobes (who have an irrational fear, or even a hate for homosexuals), and those who believe the homosexual lifestyle is sinful. The latter(myself included) do not hate homosexuals, any more than we hate any other sinner (ok, child rapists I hate) but love them and want them to turn from their sin and be saved. God bless.

  • Nice (sarcasm). You just compared Homosexuals to rapists on a moral level.

O ye of little faith and great ignorance, Ye may not pass judgement on others. That is the realm of the divine.

  • No, he really didn't. What he said was that he does NOT hate homosexuals-only believes that that behavior is harmful to their spiritual well-being-but that he DOES hate child rapists because their crime is so despicable.

You could claim that that is hypocrisy, but little else.

Note that I am an active advocate for gay rights/equality; I do NOT agree with him. However, I think that twisting words and alienating those that disagree with us does nothing to facilitate mutual understanding.

  • Book banning is idiotic. Especially since about %99 of the time the people banning the book haven't even bothered to read it! For example, Christian conservatives threw a fit over the Harry Potter series because it "promoted witchcraft." This ignores the fact that it actually teaches Christian values like perseverance, friendship, loyalty, etc.

  • Don't forget love. Love's important to a Christian, right? Books like Harry Potter, The Bermudez Triangle and many others TEACH us things. Never ever ban books!

P.S. I actually know someone who has parents that won't let him read Harry Potter! "Promoting witchcraft" has to be the stupidest reason to ban a book ever! What are they afraid of? Their kids will cast evil spells?

  • I think there is a definite separation between parents forbidding their kids to read books and a library, school, or other organization banning books. A parent has the right to raise their kids as they see fit (with obvious exceptions.) If a parent doesn't want their kid to read a book that teeaches them that homosexuality is perfectly acceptable, that's their right.

  • Yes there is a difference, Brutangel22. That still does not mean that parents who deny their kids the chance to read Harry Potter aren't morons.

And homosexuality is perfectly acceptable. Anyone who thinks otherwise has a brain the size of an acorn.

  • I'm glad you have found some fiction to amuse you. You do realise that most of the Bible is a metaphor and not to be taken literally, right?

Homosexuality is not a sin; neither is reading a book where kids wave their wands.

I'd like you to elaborate on what you think is sinful about being attracted to someone of the same sex. I will ignore anything that you say is written down in the Bible because that would be the opinion of some intolerant bastard who lived years ago.

  • you cannot dismiss everything in the bible. It is a collection of wise sayings, and the perception of event by ancient peoples.

On that note, nor should you blindly follow everything you think is said in scripture, be it christian or otherwise. First off, If you believe that magic is demonic, then you have never heard anything about King Solomn besides the "Tale of Two Mothers." Solomon was quite litterally, the most renowned magician/"wizard" of his time.

    DFTBA, hypocrite.

  • and there's been a SEPARATION between school and religion for decades, if you christian parents don't want their kids reading this stuff send them to a private, christian school

  • Now they'd have to ban Harry Potter.

  • They are trying to ban this book again in Florida. Maureen Johnson has a video about this in her youtube account MaureenBooks.

  • Book banning is so obnoxious. :/ I think books with homosexual characters should be REQUIRED reading in high schools, people are so ignorant on such topics, especially teens. Being 17 myself I can tell you, most of my peers think the same way that the silly committee does.

  • they are book nazis!!! BOOK NAZIS I TELL YOU!!!!!

  • I can't believe that people could be so bigoted to ban a clean book just because it contains characters with a sexual orientation different from what society expects. Gay people aren't evil or immoral or anything like that. Along with that, telling other people telling others what they can and can't read is wrong, too. Parents telling their kids what not to read is one thing, but people telling other people what other people's kids can and can't read is like telling them that they're bad parents

  • <
