The framerate looks jerky. The resolution is nominally 480p but the image is not at all up to what 480p can look like (DVD is the same resolution). The exposure fluctuates light/dark even when just pointed at the breaking waves. I guess it's pretty good for a cell phone but that really just tells you how terrible the typical cell phone camera is.
As much as I love the N900 and all of its features, including the great quality of its camera, I am still disappointed with the laggy framerate of the camera. I checked out your forums on My Symbian and My Maemo but wasn't able to post my question there, so I'll do it here hoping someone can answer it.
Can the camera's 'laggyness' be fixed through a firmware update, and if so, will Nokia address this issue or do they think the camera is fine the way it is?
It's about time Nokia went beyond the usual 640x480. This looks great, and the sound doesn't fluctuate like the N97! I really hope they start using this format on other Nseries.
It is caused by the AWB (Automatic White Balance) and AEC (Automatic Exposure Compensation) being active, and changing all the time to compensate for how light and colours change. In case of such "difficult" scenery, you may want to select any of the pre-set White Balance modes and it'll solve the problem. It looks precisely the same on camcorders, nothing really special or unique to the N900.
Of course those examples I just posted links to aren't exactly fair. Youtube compresses way better with material uploaded in HD. But generally, when watching raw samples, Nokia PQ in camera department is somewhat disappointing. Nokia shines in audio quality (great clipping limiter and nice samplig rate) and constant frame rates (take the old N95 for example) when it comes to recording video. All in all, I must say that Nokia N900 looks like a incredible phone with superb hardware and software.
this was recorded in 720p but retarded youtube lowered the quality

The quality is really bad, i have the n95, n96, and now the n97 phone, and all of them can record mutch mutch better and with more fluid framerate!

N900 records 16:9 video in 848x480 resolution. This video is original, NOT modified in any way, straight from the N900.

Yes, white balance can be set either to Auto, or to Cloudy, Fluorescent, Sunny or Tungsten. Exposure can be adjusted between -2 and 2 in 0.5 steps.

Do they give any options on white balance, exposure, contrast etc. settings on N900?
