Blondie should have had her listening ears on. "He totally dropped off the map" "...so did his family have any contact with him while he was doing this?" "No..he completely dropped off the map."
I know I'll be disliked for this, but I thought Milk was a lame movie; it just seemed too much jumping onto the bandwagon for me.... I saw a documentary made using real footage though in college and about Milk and that was very powerful, much more so than the fictional movie. I usually like Penn, but found him and Hirsch annoying in that movie.
The internets full of people who think they have the answer to everything (know it alls). there's not only one correct belief in life, if you think your belief is the only way in life youve shut yourself off from a whole new perspective. i just wanted to know what people thought of this film and its message but all there is is argument..
i did this for a couple of months and then after being stuck in capetown for almost a week i discoverd this movie saw that chris died and thought fuck, im not going any futher

into the wild?????????? another kid with the world at his fingertips because of his parents......and what.....oh.........he pisses it away by tryi9ng to be something he's not. yes i've seen the movie and there is no way this guy does all these things but yet burns all his money in the begining....stupid. sounds like this kid was on meth
Man, go read the book and then at least pretend to know what you're talking about you pretentious fuck. 'The world as his fingertips'? You need to see that having everything - money, cars, houses, jobs - that isn't the world. That's empty bullshit. The guy did what made him happy. All that'll ever make you happy is hd tv and routine. You've no right to call your lifestyle better and more 'conformed'. If the whole world had your attitude we'd look exactly the same and think the same.
man go read the....shut the fuck up!!! You are probably one of the golden childs, thinking that everything's all messed up in the world and YOU AND YOU alone are the only one who can fix it, right? Go suck on your mom and dad's teet some more, cause we all know that makes you happy! Oh and by the way, him doing what made him happy....made him dead. Real smart! Too bad real people in the REAL world can't just quit their job and be happy everywhere...oh yeah they're called bums
@josep3r3z have you even read the book or even seen the movie? shut the fuck up, chris mccandless was a inspirational person. you're probably one of those fucks who play video games 24/7 and rot inside your house everyday. why did you click on this video and comment on it if you have something rude to say? obviously you're just hating. go somewhere where people want your stupid ass irrelevant opinion. this dude had courage and intelligence, something you will never have.
If i'm so irrelevant???, why comment??? bitch! Are you a republican?? you certainly sound like one. Go get your car loans with no interest, go get your houses at the dollar, go get whatever you want at half the price what normal people pay.....after all it is America where stupid fucks like you think that you can just live off the land while tax paying citizens like me take it up the ass, normal people can't live that way moron.....only the privileged
A lot of people who are very smart and sensitive will suffer. The same with artists. Thats known. I think he did the unthinkable which was amazing, but there's no doubt that his emotional side was immature and probably very complicated.
Its about querying what you want out of life i think. Chris's queries were a mixed bag. He wanted out; natural inspiration to break his ego structure and to be as close to enlightened as possible but also, he felt very let down in other ways. Some people escape pain through drugs, sex, alcohol, obsessions. He might have done that through societal abstinence. Its existential too. He was very philosophical, he loved intellectual books. He questioned structures and he applied them to himself as wel
Chris suffered from family pressure in his life, plus he was sensitive. Put them together. Hated the pressure, what he saw and was stuck. He went into the wild for two reasons. To get out of his ego that the society had built in him that he could not remove and to remove himself from paid. The first is noble, the second isnt. Dealing with pain is difficult. But there can be balance in society. people have done it. However yes, there are people who like wild living as a means for life.
did you know it, di-did you.. tha-th-that phrase actors use, did you you know you guys know guys know you NAILED it after you did it? im pretty sure everyone says "nailed it" isnt a phrase that only actors use.. idiot.
I know this sounds extreme but I hate the guy to Emile's right so much I would like to cut his head off infront of a camera like the middle easten terrorists do with innocent hostiges! But that might be too memorable of a death for him. Sorry about the harshness but he's really loathesome. I literally cant stomach him.
These (so called) people interviewing Emile Hirsch are really loathsome and fake as $3 bills. UGGHH they are almost unberable to live through in this video. Emile Hirsch is of course very intelligent and likeable, unlike the rest of the vile bunch.UUGGHH again they are horrible as he conveys by his reaction to them for the most part.
hahaha I love how when they say "AND you're in speedracer this summer thats gonna be HUGE" hes just like "...yeaa...we'll see" haha he already knew it was going to suck
I really dont think his example should be regarded as some kind of noble thing. Sure it was sorta noble how he rejected conformity & was disgusted by the general superficial attitude but not everybody is like that. Plus he was so judgmental & felt superior to everyone else but what the hell was so noble about a plan to go unprepared into the wild & live by yourself. In the end it was a foolish endeavor seeing how he died of malnutrition within months
Nice of you to respond to my judgeful comment about some dude who found happiness in the middle of no where in some jungle in Alaska before he died,i have integrity enough to deal with life and all obstacle inb my life not running away into the jungle to go live and escape whatever the fuck you call happiness or whatever but as you insist it is the best thing to do then i wld suggest you search for happiness or whatever you call and move yourself into some jungle in some place too you idiot.
@madmaxwell77 man he wasn't running from reality, he simply didn't like a world where everyone searches for a good job and a new car trying just to look wealthy in front of others' people eyes. I asume that he knew that he couldnt change the world so he decided to leave from the world that he didnt like. He didnt do that because he wanted to convince people to do the same thing but because this is what he wanted to do with his life. Whatever you or I think doent matter
@madmaxwell77 I see your point but I don't think he was only running from stuff. I'd like to think he was also running to something that drove him as well. But I see your point as well.
Don't miss the documentary Summit on the Summit where Emile Hirsh, Jessica Biel, Alexandra Cousteau, Kenna, Lupe Fiasco and Shanti Gold climb the Kilimanjaro to raise awareness on the lack of clean water in Africa. Little did he know by the time he made Into the Wild that the true wildest thoughest journey of his life was to happen in 2010.
@madmaxwell77 its all personal opinion. he wasnt trying to change the world. he just didnt like the way he was living his life. he wanted some adventure, something the regular life in this mondern day couldn't bring. all youre trying to do is prove that his OPINION is wrong. and once someone tries to do that, yes, they are a fucken dumbass.
Well sure is dumb and stupid, searching for adventure in the middle of nowhere in Alaska out of all the reserves and interesting places in the world, reality why do people think so much about him afterall it was a a successful suicide attempt.
@madmaxwell77 You are neck high, immersed in materials. Someone like you would never understand what its like to break free and actually be free. Stay trapped in your little hole and stay content with being limited.
@madmaxwell77 So, it "sure is dumb and stupid" to follow a dream? A dream that few people would ever attempt? He wasn't searching for adventure, he was searching for happiness and dignity. Any self-respecting human would understand that. I find it hard not to "bash" on you, however, everybody makes mistakes and I understand that. You need to reconsider what you have said. This man died with pride, dignity, and integrity. You, will be lucky to leave your life with one of these attributes.
Seriously you people need to get over this bullshit, why the hell should anyone be famous with this individual, how do you move yourself from civilization and go into the middle of nowhere in the remotest place in the world, what was he expecting that civilization was going to move with him because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and always had everything he wanted in life.
Well bottomline is that he had a brain malfunction and got what came to him.
Well since you are so smart i have an idea for you how about you take a hike into the wild as well to get away from civilization or society hillbilly muthafucka,.......
@madmaxwell77 i can tell im dealing with either a child, or someone with the mindset of a child, based on your response. so im not even going to waste anymore of my time with you.
I think this movie will be kind of like Shawshank Redemption in that it was kind of overlooked while in theaters but achieved classic status nonetheless.
this is huge in scandinavia =) amazing movie. I've been to America and some of the people there haven't even heard about this. Not that everyone NEEDS to know about it but... its just so beautiful and important. A world with no society. No money. He's an inspiration.
I guess these particular people are the kinds of media that Emile Hirsch talks about when we talks about his dislike for "SOCIETY" etc. I guess that is ironic but in my experience Americans don't get irony anyways!

This is one of them films that will change your hole outlook on life if you open you mind up to it. shows how much we all have and how unhappy its making us all. Mind blowing!
opinions. free to think what we all like. let's respect this. i feel asking this on youtube is a fallacy, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I see your point DaGanja. I do enjoy the film nonetheless, as it makes me a bit more open minded. cheers fellas.
i think Emile felt like Christopher McCandless did when he arrived in LA in this interview. Himself, with real talent sat their talking to the most fake people you can imagine. I wonder sometimes about this world, but then Into The Wild gives me hope once again.
i truly respect chris and he and i are a lot a like i spent 5 years hitchhiking canada and have spent 3 months in the wild aka no mans land ultimate freedom i made some travel videos check em out on my page
The distress note below was purposely not part of the movie.
Attention possible visitors. "S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak too hike out of here. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August ?"
He screwed up and in the end no longer though of himself as the free-spirit Alex Supertramp.
@ALLinALLgood That element was shown in much more subtle ways than the sign. The way the phrase "call things by its true name" coincides with his mistake with the plants and his decision to sign his true name on the other note he left. The part where he sees himself in his parents arms, acknowledging that he could have achieved that internal freedom without leaving everybody behind. The fact that he made a mistake is included in the film, not in a romantic way, but a sophisticated one.
Antisocial behavior and misanthropy masquerading as a romantic search for metaphysical "truth". In reality, a selfish spoiled East Coast kid overestimates his ability and the true nature of the wild and ends up basically committing suicide. As a film,an overwrought, overacted, self-indulgent piece of ham-handed postmodernist crap.
@DaGanjaSamurai ....in most part i agree with ur comment...he was selfish, and careless...but other parts of his story do touch me, his craving for freedom from this materialistic world....things like these always confuse me, and i begin to question my own life and my ways...how silly man.
i love when the blonde asked him if he had any contact with his family during this even though he had already said that didn't and he was like...no...he..completely...dropped....off..the...map
Lessons I learned from his journey: 1- "Happiness is only real when shared" 2- "when you forgive, you love. And when you love, God's light shines through you" 3- He inspired me to ACT upon my own passion rather than just COMPLAIN (e.g. instead of complaining about his desire to detach himself from materialism; he burn his money!, abounded his car!, and society !!! ) 4- He may not have the chance to apply those lessons because of his death; but the chance is in our hand
Chris was a genius when it came to life. He lived more in his 24 years than most people can even dream of. "Society you're a crazy breed. I hope you're not lonely without me."
@waldenpondogre its so true. these people are rediculous. im watching this because emile is probably one of the only high profile people that has gone in depth into chris' life. i feel bad he couldnt hardly give that perspective because these interviewers have stupid questions.
you can tell the man is intelligent i freaking cracked up when they mentioned he was going to be in speed racer and he just kinda looked down and quietly said " ya we'll see", haha. this guy is an awesome actor.
movie is great for sure, but people may idealize Chris too much. He had a sad story and hadn't see any hope in people (or anything else), he was partly scared, partly disgust to live among people, so he stepped on the road of self destruction and had succeeded. That is exactly why we should consider his last thought, see good in people and share our happiness with each other
I've read the book "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer based on the true story of Christopher McCandless. It is an absolute masterpiece of the century, one that is so interrelated and deeply eloquent in countless ways. His journey into the wild, as abandoning the illusionments of the world left him discover his own personal self and the true meaning of living.
i don't understand how people in these comments can argue over how chris died. no one was with him and the only facts we know are what? there was no poison in his blood when they autopsied him, he himself said he was injured, but you know what? why does it matter HOW he died? yes it could be considered suicide. but from what i can tell he set out knowing he'd die on the road, somewhere. or in the wild. but i dont think he set out to die. he set out to see and experience new things and died happy
@oheynikki (cont) and that's what the story is about. he lived his life and died, so i don't see why it's so important to know if he died by poisoning or starvation.
People go there check it out and try to see if they could of got out the bus area was far from road it was on a trail though and he (Chris) had to cross a creek to get to a trail that led to main road. I don't know what happened but theres so much proof out there that he cold of been saved so the theory that he was too weak got poisoned by mold to get u and move makes since. Why didn't he go out to the main road as soon as he felt bad maybe he didn't know.
@Neithie Yes He must of been too weak. I'll admit being from Ak we have a hard time understanding how he couldn't of got out. Or that he just wasn't prepared to make it on his own. I was in the 11th grade when he was discovered.
Here's what I got from the movie: He got everything handed to him, if he didn't find that bus he would've probably died a lot earlier, you never eat shit that you are not 100% positive what it is, he is nobody to look up to because you don't walk blind into things you have no experience with (unless you're born blind) he lacked common sense. His survival skills were basically pathetic, and if you plan on living in Alaska based on what he knew you better bring a body bag.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This movie was dumb and so was the guy it was based on. Hey I'm gonna go live in the wild in Alaska with some rice and a .22 rifle. What a dumbass, no wonder why he's dead. And hey if this guy loved books so much, why not get one based on survival? Oh wait, that would make too much sense for this guy. What a shitty movie, based on a real dumb mother fucker.
@joedruo Ignorant? Here's some words for you. Why don't you go starve yourself and eat a poisonous plant like your hero did. Or better yet, why don't you try and live in the wild having no experience with it at all. Try to live off the land and see how you do. People who have no experience in the wild, die for a reason. They're IGNORANT!
@Sidoti8 We know now that he didn't die of poisoning. He died from starvation. He had been surviving on rabbits, and while that may sustain a healthy man for a short while, he was already half starving. It was an easy mistake to make- it'd be easy to think that eating rabbits and small game was enough.
i love this film so much, but it sucks, ive been trying to buy it for about a month now but the company that had distibution rights went under so no dvd stores have it anymore ='(
@BQSurfer do you believe anything medias or books says without researching the truth for yourself? Chris McCandless did not die as the result of eating a poisonous plant or “moldy seeds.” The Hedysarum alpinum is not toxic!
"When we spoke with the Alaskan medical examiner who conducted the Chris McCandless autopsy, and asked him if he thought Chris might have been poisoned…he said no, not at all, and that he believed McCandless simply starved to death. "
@Humanistiqua u can't come with "do u believe what medias or books say bla bla..." in this case. Not in the case of Jon Krakauer and his book. And yes, he starved to death. But it seems like u didn't understand the case of the seed: it was full of Alkaloids in that time of the year, normally that wouldnt be a problem but chris was weekened. Alkaloids cause damage to the metabolic system which means anything he ate couldnt be transferred into energy, so yes he literally 'starved' to death.
@Humanistiqua hestarved to death but not from poisonous plants or seeds like in the movie and he did have $300 on him and his social security... The book doesn't reflect the truth at all! whatch the cal of the wild and terra incognita.
@adiostraitorobama where? to alaska? id love to but unfortunatly i cant cuz i live in israel and illonly will be able to leave in like the age of 23. and im now only 18. but maybe i will do it sometime...
How do people even come up with this nonsense? So he has had an injury, that wasn't the cause of his death. Poisonous material has been discovered in the seeds of the plant Chris ate, which was publically unknown because it only gets poisonous in certain periods of the year. If you would have actually read the book you would have known it makes you die from hunger no matter how much you eat. Check the facts before you start repeating after some article you've read.
i can't even BELIEVE this movie didn't get that popular!
this was soo incredible & Emile Hirsch should have won SO many awards for playing Chris, he did an amazing job. I wish this movie would be more recognized for the amazing story and actors.... :(
@Dalaneyhxc The reason it didnt make it huge is because the general society is so wrapped up in the fake plastic world that they would of watched the film without understanding the true meaning of it
The true meaning is run away from your problems, abandon society, take from others what you want and generally be selfish. In that case, I'd say most people "got it"...and summarily hated it.
Yeah, unless I found it's ham-handed false hero-worship as satisfying as you did, I'm must an idiot. Brilliant. I mean, how could anyone possibly not have the same opinions on things as you do?

@madmaxwell77 its all personal opinion. he wasnt trying to change the world. he just didnt like the way he was living his life. he wanted some adventure, something the regular life in this mondern day couldn't bring. all youre trying to do is prove that his OPINION is wrong. and once someone tries to do that, yes, they are a fucken dumbass.

Movie romantic, reality not.
ALLinALLgood 1 year ago

No fucking thanks.

Lessons I learned from his journey: 1- "Happiness is only real when shared" 2- "when you forgive, you love. And when you love, God's light shines through you" 3- He inspired me to ACT upon my own passion rather than just COMPLAIN (e.g. instead of complaining about his desire to detach himself from materialism; he burn his money!, abounded his car!, and society !!! ) 4- He may not have the chance to apply those lessons because of his death; but the chance is in our hand

movie is great for sure, but people may idealize Chris too much. He had a sad story and hadn't see any hope in people (or anything else), he was partly scared, partly disgust to live among people, so he stepped on the road of self destruction and had succeeded. That is exactly why we should consider his last thought, see good in people and share our happiness with each other
Jane342018233 1 year ago 2
I've read the book "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer based on the true story of Christopher McCandless. It is an absolute masterpiece of the century, one that is so interrelated and deeply eloquent in countless ways. His journey into the wild, as abandoning the illusionments of the world left him discover his own personal self and the true meaning of living.
1543fiitl 1 year ago
i don't understand how people in these comments can argue over how chris died. no one was with him and the only facts we know are what? there was no poison in his blood when they autopsied him, he himself said he was injured, but you know what? why does it matter HOW he died? yes it could be considered suicide. but from what i can tell he set out knowing he'd die on the road, somewhere. or in the wild. but i dont think he set out to die. he set out to see and experience new things and died happy
oheynikki 1 year ago
@oheynikki (cont) and that's what the story is about. he lived his life and died, so i don't see why it's so important to know if he died by poisoning or starvation.
oheynikki 1 year ago
People go there check it out and try to see if they could of got out the bus area was far from road it was on a trail though and he (Chris) had to cross a creek to get to a trail that led to main road. I don't know what happened but theres so much proof out there that he cold of been saved so the theory that he was too weak got poisoned by mold to get u and move makes since. Why didn't he go out to the main road as soon as he felt bad maybe he didn't know.
654aly 1 year ago
@654aly From what I heard, he died of starvation. Rabbits were all he could catch and that isn't enough to feed a healthy man, but a weakened one...
Neithie 1 year ago
@Neithie Yes He must of been too weak. I'll admit being from Ak we have a hard time understanding how he couldn't of got out. Or that he just wasn't prepared to make it on his own. I was in the 11th grade when he was discovered.
654aly 1 year ago
@MsDizzyMissLizzy

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This movie was dumb and so was the guy it was based on.
Sidoti8 1 year ago
@Sidoti8 that is so ignorant i can't even find the words... no, is that... no, they're not there.
joedruo 1 year ago
@joedruo Ignorant? Here's some words for you. Why don't you go starve yourself and eat a poisonous plant like your hero did. Or better yet, why don't you try and live in the wild having no experience with it at all. Try to live off the land and see how you do. People who have no experience in the wild, die for a reason. They're IGNORANT!
Sidoti8 1 year ago
@Sidoti8 We know now that he didn't die of poisoning. He died from starvation. He had been surviving on rabbits, and while that may sustain a healthy man for a short while, he was already half starving. It was an easy mistake to make- it'd be easy to think that eating rabbits and small game was enough.

Chris McCandless did not die as the result of eating a poisonous plant or “moldy seeds
Humanistiqua 1 year ago
@Humanistiqua he died because of the seeds. That is the most logical explanation. Even Chris Notes reffer to that.
BQSurfer 1 year ago
@BQSurfer do you believe anything medias or books says without researching the truth for yourself? Chris McCandless did not die as the result of eating a poisonous plant or “moldy seeds.” The Hedysarum alpinum is not toxic!
"When we spoke with the Alaskan medical examiner who conducted the Chris McCandless autopsy, and asked him if he thought Chris might have been poisoned…he said no, not at all, and that he believed McCandless simply starved to death. "
Humanistiqua 1 year ago
@Humanistiqua u can't come with "do u believe what medias or books say bla bla..." in this case. Not in the case of Jon Krakauer and his book. And yes, he starved to death. But it seems like u didn't understand the case of the seed: it was full of Alkaloids in that time of the year, normally that wouldnt be a problem but chris was weekened. Alkaloids cause damage to the metabolic system which means anything he ate couldnt be transferred into energy, so yes he literally 'starved' to death.
BQSurfer 1 year ago
@BQSurfer and also look and the picutre of him in front of the bus,he was injured!
and he said it in his sos note.
Humanistiqua 1 year ago
@Humanistiqua hestarved to death but not from poisonous plants or seeds like in the movie and he did have $300 on him and his social security... The book doesn't reflect the truth at all! whatch the cal of the wild and terra incognita.
