Not to downplay the seriousness of this tragedy, but the producers of this show played the scene of the wheel rim coming up between the chairs way too often...
The company says it's spent millions ... do they have any records of this? If not, I'd bet they consider that nice memorial they built to be sufficient. What an appalling miscarriage of justice for the survivors.
I travelled the journey from Hannover to Hamburg the previous 4 days on this train. Always sat around the middle of train. Still remember some of the train staff, often wondered if they survived. God bless all involved in this tragedy.
He has to investigate before stopping the train? For fucksakes, only a kraut could be so strict to the rules. It was a bloody chuck of steel in the middle of 2 seats....moron.
@moonrider67 WAS wilst du damit sagen?
Having a metal beam enter a cab right between you and another person would scar the S*** out of me. Especially at 125mph. (death just took a swipe at me with his blade).
I don't think you need "inspect the damage first" for something like that.
STOP THE TRAIN!!!!!!!
As for the lady in the house....talk about being lucky....20 more feet and she would have had to do more then just fix up her garden....
(previous post continued)... many others on that train), the train was doing 125 mph at that point, and still he feels the need to walk the length of the train before taking any action. This is shocking!!
101 lives would not have been lost if only the conductor had applied the emergency brakes when the guy told him what had happened in carriage one. I realise it's easy to sit here and make comments with the benefit of hindsight, but something was seriously wrong with Deutsche Bahn's safety culture. This conductor had a guy (no doubt still visibly in shock) telling him he had nearly been impaled by a metal spike from below, he had no doubt heard the bang himself (as had...
There is now a red dildo attached to the Memorial at Eschede. Purpose is for people who were not f**ked enough by DB and the disaster to now go back for more...you get the same feeling each time you buy a ticket aswell.
Good episode, although they do pad this show out with the same graphics over and over to fill the show, that's one thing I never did like about seconds from disaster.
And this commentator is terrible. The British one is much better (the first one that is)
It is easy to criticize people for having not pulled the emergency brake etc. from the comfort of our chairs looking backwards to the facts. However, people in that train didn't realize the danger. At high-speed trains, it would be highly unsafe to allow passengers, alone, to pull emergency brakes.
@lotwyo although the designers would have set the brake to not flip the train head over heals, more of a slow slowing and stopping, the traditional German culture would follow regulations and have the problem investigated before unduly stopping the train and causing delay.
@lotwyo you dont have to be the brains of Britain or any other country, to know the 1st thing in that situation, would be to hit the emergency stop button..rules or no rules, that guy could have saved a lot more life's.
if i am ever on a high speed train and a large piece of metal comes up through the floor, the 1st thing i shall do, is hit the emergency stop button and face the consequences later
@lotwyo According to regulations all trains must have emergency switches in the passenger compartments, additionally they embed intercom. These switches either activate the emergency brakes directly or are just alarming the driver. Having a metal bar sliced just near your seat, what else your waiting for to pull the alarm? If that dumb man had pulled the alarm he would probably attract the attention of the driver making him reduce speed or stop the train or check out what was going on.
@SwatiesBan Then you must have kept the right channel speaker on the left side.
Play some other Stereo audio file using some software and use the Balance feature to determine whether your speaker configuration is correct. When you drag the Balance slider to your right, only your right speaker should sound and vice versa.
@0x56 Good question. I believe this was recorded on a MONO VCR... so, it will depend on your pc - turn it to MONO, too (instead of stereo, of course). Otherwise you can only hear the sound coming from the right channel.
What an idiot. If i was in a train and saw a steel beam fly through the floor, i would fucking run for the emergency brake. Luckily, the trains here in Finland have 2 big red brake handles in each carriage :)
If my non action of pulling the emergency cord led to the deaths of people I would not have the audacity to apppear on a tv programme about it! What a rug head! "ugh hmm lets see... a metal bar has shot up and nearly took my bollocks off... what shall i do?.... NOTHING! thats it! naa I can do better than that I can waste time looking for the ticket man"
As far as I know, ICE trains dont have emergency cords that passengers can pull. Thats why the guy went looking for the ticket guy, to get him to stop the train.
i have now watched over 30mins of this, i still cant beleave he did not pull the cord, this guys actions lead too the deaths, i think hes a total prick
if i was sat there and a large lenth of steel came up through the floor, the emergency cord would have been pulled right away, cant somebody tell me why this dick-head did not pull it, baffles me
