They aren't the Pixies, they were better than the Pixies. I was immersed in the Rat scene in the early/mid 80's - mostly garage stuff. Some of it great. But they came out and sounded like no one else. Brilliant.
Especially if you remember that it was the Muses who recommanded the Pixies to Ivo. The Throwing Muses was the first US band ever to be signed on 4AD.
Some people are just ignorant. I'll always do my best to be respectful to any 'support' act... and if it's Throwing Muses, well I'd probably have preferred them to the Pixies!
@zararity - I remember one of the first concert reviews I wrote, which it took place in a small auditorium. These women in front of me talked loudly through the opening act, a solo performer. I leaned over and said: 'You know, if you walk ten feet behind you, you can stand in the lobby and talk there, if it's boring to you. Some of us are trying to enjoy the show, and this place is too small for such loud conversation. Have a little consideration for others.'
@Timmybear I can't 'thumbs up' this enough! It really, really gets on my nerves, not to mention how disheartening and annoying it must be for performers. Personally if I'm really not interested in a support act I will usually spend the time at the bar, at the back, wherever, I know what it's like to be on stage and have a bunch of people talking through your set...
I haven't heard this in almost 20 freakin years! Still remember most of the words though. That's how incredibly visceral Kristin's lyrics were. Not to mention her crazy sense of phrasing and melody. Who else makes great art just by singing, "A kitchen is a place where you break bread - and clean up"???
awh man I was at her gig and at the end she dissapeared, was totally bummed out cos I wanted an autograph so I decided to get Bernard to sign Kristin's album (cos he's totally cool too!) so he was signing it and I was looking down at the album and next of all I heard this voice saying "you do know he didn't play on that album right" and when I looked up Kristin was standing right infront of me - that was the BEST moment of my life!!!
@jmm122 - I was at that show at the Paradise! I preferred Throwing Muses over the Pixies back then. They sounded like nothing else around.

Love it. I was there!!! Best TM gig I saw, and I saw them 3-4 times. I missed the Pixies, who I think were on before them.

God. The abuse they're getting from the crowd there is pretty sickening. "F*** off! You're not the Pixies!" -- what a git. Who'd be a woman in rock?

This still makes me shiver and tremble ... and cry. The hairs on my neck ... every time I hear this. So affecting.

They were spoiling us, this song is like a medley, often they put enough ideas into a song to make up for a whole album
