  • Where'er we go we celebrate the land that made us refugees,

From fear of priests with empty plates; from guilt and weeping effigies.

  • In Manhattan's desert twilight, in the death of afternoon,

We stepped hand-in-hand down Broadway like the first men on the moon,

and a blackbird broke the silence and he whistled it so sweet

and in Brendan Behan's footsteps I danced up and down the street.

Then we raised a glass to JFK and a dozen more besides,

But when I got back to my empty room I suppose I must have cried.

  • I could listen to this song all day long...still makes me cry.

  • Shane McGowan is my favourite poet.

  • I'm Irish and living in Dublin. If ever I leave Ireland (which is quite possible at the moment), I'll post this on Facebook :-)

  • I wanna go to Ireland sometime.

  • Dang!! My english teacher (i'm french) made me discover that song... i can't stop listening it and i want to go to ireland T-T

  • i love this song so much!

  • Ireland you rock by your Cro bros!!!!

  • I remember when this first came out on vinyl, never dreaming of a day when I would be listening to it some 25 years later. Its better than any of the crap thats out there today. Outstanding stuff man

  • I agree with the top comment, U2 fucking sucks

  • the pogues may be of Irish decent, as am I, but only Shane was born in Ireland, they are London Irish. Great song though " Where e'er we go, we celebrate

The land that makes us refugees"

  • 0:40 Avalon house on Aungier street! Just down the side there on Whitefriar place is Into The Void Records, best record store in Ireland!

  • i hate the poxy artless Advertisements you have to sit through in order to see this amazing music

  • all the songs of The Pogues are brilliant ! It always a great pleasure to listen them :)

  • bastard fucking adverts

  • I love how in America the Irish stick together, for example:

A man and his girlfriend were charged in a baseball bat attack. The Limerick girl is on life-support. This man is in jail, thank God. But when he gets out, a gang of Irishmen will be his escort out of court. Armed with the Irish will for justice, which has been missing so many years.

  • Shane is a lyrical genius,a fucking legend up there with all the great literary heroes that Ireland has ever produced. His songs can make you laugh, make you cry, send a shiver down the spine.

  • @lyallbaybum69 True, Shane's written some great lyrics in his time, but he didn't write this song.

  • @Fiddleysteve You are absolutely correct there,it was Phil.

  • @lyallbaybum69 phil lynott?

  • @wabblum99 Nah,Phil Chevron.

  • like??? I fecking love this tune!!!!!!

  • This is awesome,

Greetings from Croatia to our Catholic brothers Ireland !

  • @STEINAR008 its great 2 c people from different countrys liking irish music thank you

  • @Noodles74958 Oh we love irish people, music.... Pogues had a concert in Zagreb a few months ago. It was amazing to see that Shane is still entered in the song and just do you feel the song in the best way

  • @STEINAR008 See you at the Euros!

  • absolutely wrong, mate. the Pogues are as Irish as Brendan Behan and Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde! This song is them at their peak of expressiveness. Beautiful.

  • @maverick7376 no theyre actually from london, i know i thought they where irish too

  • @eamon305 The band formed in london, they are irish, and from ireland

  • I visited the Irish Hunger Memorial down on the Battery in New York City. This song was ringing in my ears, and then I saw the rock of Kilkenny. Then it was Wildcats of Kilkenny all the way home

  • The Pogues are from England buddy. Great band though.

  • @newfiebynature no they are from Ireland

  • @maverick7376 Some are from England some from Ireland.

  • @shumirules1 Ok thanks for information.

  • Fuck u2...Bono is a greedy wanker and doesnt stick up for the irish people.

  • Thousands leaving spain this year. Where is that work people talk about?

  • Try to sing this song like Shane McGowan does but not in front of your wife because she will vote you 'out'

  • @sctt44

Actually i don't know, and i don't really care. Their music is Irish enough though.

But if somebody was thanking Ireland for the Pogues and U2 i thought i should throw Thin Lizzy in there too. And i guess somebody will tell me not all of them were Irish? Again -> it doesn't matter ;)

    Cheers!

  • @6Tix6 Damn right...Dont forget Lizzy.....Best band to come out of Ireland

  • @sctt44

No, the Pogues are from Kings Cross, London, but they consider themselves London-Irish.

  • "Thanks Ireland for the Pogues" Except the Pogues are from London. As in London, England. The Irony...

  • @bigjohnfatty

...except the Pogues consider themselves to be 'Irish' although they're, eh, English. The double irony...

  • @bigjohnfatty irish descent, you can take the man out of the bog but you cant take the bog out of the man, oglaigh na eirann!

  • Dear Ireland,

Thank you for the Poques, The Dubliners., and ALL the whiskey. But can you take U2 back?

  • @DmnItAll2Hell Didn't U2 win "the Biggest Douche Award" in the U.S.A.?

  • @johnny22190 if they didn't it's only 'cause no one went out and voted

  • @DmnItAll2Hell

    haha LOL

  • @DmnItAll2Hell

    Pogues?

  • Gogol Bordello copied these guys

  • powerful words... and equally powerful music... shane never fails to deliver

  • What about the Dubliners, the Cheiftains, Christy Moore, Rory Gallagher, etc etc etc,

I'm an Englishman lost in mainland europe, can I come to Ireland please?

  • @afuadonki

If you are a good writer with a sharp tongue, you would be welcome in Belfast!

  • "Thanx Ireland for The Pogues and The U2!!"

    ...and Thin Lizzy :D

    <3

  • what do you think ken?

  • @RevengeWasHere2011

I'll never understand, how people can be proud of something they have played absolutely no role in.

  • How do you pronounce pogue?

  • @manrayer88 like rogue the 'g' is hard like in goat and the 'o' is long like in road.

  • @manrayer88 its pronounced like rogue, however the word derives from the Gaelic "póg" of the same pronounciation, meaning "kiss".

  • THANK YOU!!! MY fav Pogue song!!!!

  • @RevengeWasHere2011

Don't forget there were "redneck" (Confederate) Irish brigades too. Be careful of branding all southeners as "rednecks". A lot of us may be farms or ranchers, but not all of us are what y'all think of as "rednecks"

  • So what if Ireland are having tough times,we've had centuries of poverty, only about a decade of wealth. We'll manage.

  • I come from a large Irish family, and have relatives in Ireland, England, and the US. And we've all agreed that the more distance there is between us, the better. I love em from afar, but we fight like banshees whenever we're together.

So some of us were seeking opportunity. But I think most of my family were seeking a little peace and quiet.

  • my favorite Song from the pogues. Shane you lost the text in münster 2010. Stay clean. Wanna here your awesome music many years.

  • wooooooo, woooooo people!!!!! hang on a second!!!! Ireland is not f**ked, we'r a tough race of people who have over come way worse than this crisis! We'v always been an ambitious country, always boxed above our weight, yes we went from crawl to sprint but thats our spirit- we always make our mark in the world & we'r only a small population....what other country our size can claim so much...come on people! if the rest of europe was like us then it would be a super power!!!!!!!

  • @malcolmkav76 Exactly man. We invented king crisps, we can do ANYTHING.

Besides take a trip to Greece, that country is FUCKED. Makes me see how good we have it here :)

  • what Country is responsable for all the atrocities that has hit Ireland ? VOTE NOW !!!

  • The Irish have won against all odds again. God bless the nation of Ireland.!

  • I am proud to be an Irish-American

  • i am so lost..... i dont remember posting anything.....

  • The only thing I would add is that I don't believe EU membership and globalization are all that they're cracked up to be. They seem like a giant free trade scheme by the rich meant to benefit the multi-national corporations while leaving the average European worker holding a bag full of national debts. The same things happening here in the States. Free trade and globalization has made the rich richer while leaving the average man with no job unless he wants to work at Starbucks or McDonalds.

  • I've heard that the problems in Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Greece were caused by people betting in the stock market that these nations would not be able to pay their debts. I'm no economist but it sounds like foreign investors and greedy native bankers caused the financial collapse in Ireland not the average Irishman and Irishwoman. I guess we'll see a new wave of Irish immigrants in San Francisco. Hate to meet under bad circumstances but they're welcome here. They're good people.

  • My family isn't Irish (we're Jewish) but we came over on the boats at the same time as the Irish. My grandfather told us always to respect the Irish because they cared about family, education and country. They struggled in their homeland and found HUGE SUCCESS in the United States. Hard workers, successful businessmen, strong boxers, great baseball players, just like us Jews.

  • pogues come from london not ireland :D

  • em the video doesn't seem to have much connection to the song

  • Pure Irish heart

  • Absolutly brilliant song.

  • Mr Shane MacGowan is the face of the Pogues, and he was born in Tunbridge Wells on Christmas Day 1957

  • fuck U2 for using Ireland to propel their careers only to dodge as much tax as possible by sending there money into offshore accounts

  • @toez100 - maybe that's may be a fair point I don't know U2's business - but a question do you think it fair Ireland being in the Eu and Ireland have a import vrt duty of 21 % on a car - I think everyone would dodge that if they could - BUT they can't - so how has a person paying more for irish goods helped Ireland all the government did was piss the tax up against the wall - you were saying :-)

  • they arent an irish band... the pogues are rogue folk (AKA) folk punk.....

  • @meeeeeeeeshable - sorry - your not irish i Think - Shane's parents were Irish and he grew in Ireland as a kid visting back and forwards (born in england) - his music is SO IRISH it hurts to think different - his songs are mostly anti-english - the point being is call it punk or what ever you want - down the road in Tipperary there a small house and your find him there - you were saying?

  • @theapeman10 I love the Pogues but the most embarrassing thing now is that 30 years later its relivant again. My parents are crushed that they worked to see me leave

  • I think there is a australian influence their as well, from what i can remember. The guitarist is irish.

  • These lyrics are incredible.

  • @TheBrautigans absolutely, shane was an excellent lyricist,a truelly brilliant song, i love it.

  • pogues are NOT an irish band. for god sake..

  • @lordwerewolf ok,but who is the face of the pogues and where was he born?what kind of music do they play?

  • @hangsambo12 they play irish music, shane is irish, but the whole band isn't irish, they are from london.

  • @lordwerewolf i am aware of that, but they would be classed as an irish band.

  • @lordwerewolf i am aware of that, but they would be classed as an irish band.

  • brendan the navigator - all his fault

  • @rockyraccoon100

Fuckin ay , My son and ex came back from NZ and cannot get a house money or work. Fucking natives refused entry. The country is fucked.FUCK THE ..GOVERNMENT.

  • @2002dryfoam

If I had room I'd offer. Fuck that noise, when will Ireland gets it's culture back. Who gives a shit about plasma screen TV's in pubs ? Let's here somebody sing some Luke Kelly instead of watching Sky News or something.

  • They say fuck those bastards in Fianna Fail and all this, all i have to say is this, why did you fucking vote them in then? People were too stupid to see there crap and bollocks. The people, the banks, regulator and ministers and Taoiseachs are all to fucking blame. Sad that another generation like myself have to leave.

  • I couldn't care two shits if the Pogues or Shane are Irish or English by place of birth. He was born in England, yes, grew up in Ireland, and is Irish by blood...and the band plays primarily irish tunes.

Let us not turn this into an argument about self-ethnic pride...if any of us were true fans of the Pogues we would simply say "I fucking love what I hear and do not give a shit about anything else pertaining to the band or its members."

  • Sounds like it's happening.

  • good work mate fairplay

  • Who da Fuck told You dear guys that The Pogues is an Irish band and Shane an Irishman...He's bloody english, gentlemen and have a nice one~!

  • @nevergounder this argument is on every pouges song! he was born in england but there an irish band, the music is all irish ,in fairness most there songs are about irish living abroad in america england blah blah

  • @stevieb6966 agree mate. Bless!

  • @nevergounder He was born in england. . but his passport is irish and he's a irish citezin so fuck u

  • @rockst4rFTW whatever Shane's pasport is He's great and You're a pants pissing kid with no simple ability to use a word FUCK in some elegant maner...also You are probably famous as the Wet Work Camper so go get some Xp to buy a Balls-growing perk...Greetz Mate

  • @rockst4rFTW whatever Shane's pasport is He's great and You're a pants pissing kid with no simple ability to use a word FUCK in some elegant maner...also You are probably famous as the Wet Work Camper so go get some Xp to buy a Balls-growing perk...Greetz Mate...even if You are right.

  • @nevergounder hahah ye alri matee ;) wateva u say haha. . and wat u on bout wetwork camper ?

  • theres alot better things you could have shown instead of guiness nd u2 you dont even attempt to try to represent the story of the song

  • U2's for faggets -.-

  • Just voicing my opinion or am i not allowed even that in your so called Union

  • Have just finished reading 'Angela's Ashes', which really struck a chord with me. I have known of the Pogues for years and years, and LOVE them. This song has even more meaning for me now. I have one grandfather who came to Canadaback in 1900, the rest of me is British....I carry the cultural guilt of the Britiish. My bf is of Scot descent - oh boy, another guilt thing. got the Proclaimers for that one.....

  • GREAT FEELING MUSICALLY. GREAT INTERPRETATION ON SOCIAL CHANGES, MUST BE FURTHER EXPLORED. WORLDWIDE. ROGUE CAPITALISM, MAN V MAN, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND ANIMALS AND ECOSYSTEMS WHO SUFFER. BY THE WAY I LOVE THE POGUES.

  • My number 1 band of all time. Final answer.

  • and the torch lights up, a famished man, who fortune could not save

  • 5:03 ive been there once :P

  • Shane is the world biggest genius

  • pogues are not irish band lol

  • @lordwerewolf Yes they are.

  • @pinkmareep no, they are not.

they are from Kings Cross, London.

Shane is irish but band is english, they play irish music.

  • Politics again. This song takes me back to a political free Saturday detention in school, I was early and listened to this on my sony walkman as I walked around a desolate 19th century public school in Liverpool as a twelve year old boy wondering where I had gone wrong. Funny, this has an entirely different feeling for me than it does for most......

  • @rockyraccoon100 is the government that bad there?

  • @rockyraccoon100 fuck fianna fail

  • Time for another verse; Austrailia this time.

  • 1:03 Molly Malone :)

  • GEIL,GEIL,GEIL forever POGUES

  • pogues shit on u2

  • I enjoy U2 sometimes, but the Pogues greatly trumps them. Irish drinking punk over alternative Irish rock any day.

  • @MasterSamurai I absolutely hate U2 and find Bono extremely annoying with his bubble butt and self-righteous bullshit, however I feel Shane is one of the last true poets. God Bless The Pogues.

  • TUNE!

  • What the fuck is up with all the "im more irish than you" competitions? im german as fuck (american with german blood), but you know what... i love irish music and culture. who gives a shit where youre from? work hard, party hard, take care of your friends and family. be a man, thats what its all about and thats what matters!

  • Just because an Ass is born in a stable...it does'nt make him a Horse!!!!!

  • I've got news for all you plastic paddys. The Pogues are not Irish. Their English.

  • @MegaBubbleandsqueak Obvious troll is obvious.

  • @MegaBubbleandsqueak who gives a bubbly fuck, I'm american and mostly irish, and I take fucking pride in my heritage, doesn't matter where your from as long as yah got the blood, now quit trolling and suck it up.

  • @MegaBubbleandsqueak dont be such a stuoid dope

  • @MegaBubbleandsqueak you're a fuckin eejit. the pogues are not english. thats why they sing irish songs isnt it and join in on all the irish football anthems. thats why get pro IRA songs banned on live english tv shows. thats why there lead singer is an irish citizen living between dublin and tipperary with rest of the band being of irish descent and irish. if they were english they wouldnt be called the pogues you fukin eejit. theyre just a band that formed in the irish diaspora!!

  • Remember An Gorta Mor. Don't forget or trivialise the devastation.

This was genocide, and it was only 3 generations ago.

But we'll dance to the music, and we'll dance.

    Tiocfaidh ar la.

  • @rockyraccoon100 because not enough people vote fucking sinn fein

  • Gosh, this music is somewhat shocking when you first hear it... but as you listen more, it's very powerful!

  • what a song i love the poguse =) come on vote up if u do to =)

  • An incredibly gifted group of musicians, when they're not throwin' up down the back alleys of Dublin

  • The Pogues - Masters of Ballads......

    Shane - A Poet

  • Why all the shit on U2 in the vid? Everyone here thinks they're wankers lol

  • @fionnoc it's just that he's compared the 2 and there's not even a comparison. The pogues are amazing and passionate, and every second of music made by them makes me more and more proud of being irish. I love these guys, they've got me through so much and seem to ask for no return.

  • @fionnoc dont hate.

  • @awt00 ohhh sorry playa! But they're shite. I think it's an embarrassment to Ireland and the Pogues to show them in the same vid. I'm sure 95% of people in Ireland would agree with me.

  • @fionnoc maybe bro. take it easy.
