  • RIP Colin Crompton and Bernard Manning

  • Rest in peace Ken You will be mist comedy at its best

  • this is really shite tv, send it to the same knackers yard as LoveThyNeighbour!!

  • "Silence when the turn's are on".

  • "The committee,the committee,ring,ring,ring"

  • That's a rare treat on Youtube, a video that makes you masturbate and cry simultaneously.

  • was that Debbie Magee?

  • As well as 'Michael Heseltine' enjoying the show, have a look at the bloke sitting behind Colin Crompton at the start. From the side he has more than a passing resemblance to Arthur from On The Buses. Also that 'performer' could well be Barry Cryer in a crap wig!! What a brilliant clip by the way!!!

  • bloody great..lol

  • The whole point of this programme was to try to recreate the atmosphere in a typical working mens club and in that respect it succeeded admirably. It was never meant to be the Royal Variety Show. As someone who spent many years playing the clubs, I can confirm that the quality of acts varied from the sublime to the ridiculous, that was half the attraction. It was largely a question of finance, many clubs simply could not afford quality acts. It's now all Karaoke and Discos if you're lucky.

  • I enjoyed this show in the 70's and thought Colin Crompton was great , but some of the acts quite frankly were crap including 'The Playmates' ... what utter rubbish !

  • There's some marvelous hair do's going on here...

  • I'm pretty Sure Frank Skinner is Colin Crompton's love child!

  • incredible !!

  • I remember watching this prog in the 70's, i loved Bernard Manning, but this tv show was rubbish then and its got no better with time, some of the "turns" were very good, but the show was just a piss poor effort all round

  • This show was massive in Italy...

  • RIP Colin Crompton..The best MC ever...I watched it back in the 70's and loved it, because of all the PC brigade out there we can't laugh hard anymore.

Who watched Love Thy Neighbour and cried tears of laughter at the script, it was always 50/50 and I think a young audience would love it...no matter what skin colour..

  • Aaay-oop ! that's my moom ooop on stage. y'naw ....

  • Working mans humour. Fuck the nobility

  • Can anyone tell me what PJ Proby sang when he appeared on this show ?? and what year he was on ??

    Thanks Dave,

  • @theBESTelvis. P.J. appeared on the 27th July 1974. He sang "I Know (You Know)". Must say I was astounded by the quality of the DVD & it's full of legends!! No I don't mean The Playmates!! LOL! Modern telly, modern comedians, modern singers.....stick 'em where the sun don't shine!! Take me back to the good old days & shows like this!

  • I vaguely remember this. With me being a 70's child, it would have been shown way after my bed-time. So, I could have only ever saw it a couple of times. But, what I did see certainly stuck with me. Colin Compton, for one, with his odd-looking fire bell with a handle on his table, that he would ring in order to get attention and quieten down the audience. Working men's clubs had all but gone by the I was old enough to be allowed into one, so it's hard to say how authentic this would have been.

  • Aye ! It were affiliated you know !!!

  • is it just me or is this dancing girl......debbie Mcgee.......paul daniels missis.....

  • @mickytwoknives Yeah, looks like Debbie has a taste for short arsed wigheads.

  • Colin Crompton, the advocate for lung cancer

  • The pies have arrived.

  • @clearly

His name was Norman Collier, a wonderful entertainer.

  • I used to watch this when i was a kid.....anyone know where the video is of the guy that used to pretend the mic was faulty, sounded like he was stuttering lol

  • @makeminealarge1 The guy was called Norman Collier and that act must have been tricky to get right. Twas funny for sure. Stanley Unwin was another linguistically clever comedian.

  • Today`s comedy(except that of Doddy) is not even in the same league!

  • my g** have you ever seen these ?

  • Im sure this inspired Phoenix Nights.

  • omg i didnt like this when i was a kid, and i havent changed my mind! lol - my OH loves it though - the old fart....!

  • About as funny as a burning orphanage

  • 'Pies are ready'

  • AND GOSH, THERE ARE SO MANY FAGS........

  • I WANT THAT CAP

  • the bloke at the begining looks like a northern frank skinner.

  • @sugarcoatedbeard - Frank Skinner is northern.

  • @B0ph Isnt Frank Skinner a Birmingham lad, well Northern to you I spose.

  • @clearly - Anything north of Watford is up north mate.

  • @clearly More and more people are moving slightly northwards. I'm from Kingston upon Thames but I've found a paradise here in Staffordshire, in a pretty market town. Most people here speak with a southern accent.

Shropshire and Worcester are nice too. I would never go back to the 24/7 traffic and the hectic life style ever again. Now Manchester and Birmingham and all points north, I agree, thats the real Norf!

  • @clearly isnt writing norf with an f (as it would be said by cockneys) rather demeaning to people from Northern England - only cockneys would be cocky enough to try to make THEIR accent synonymous with another part of the country ps im originally from the south east and that kind of arrogance makes me embarrassed to be from around London

  • @ancientraver19881989 I try never to be arrogant. I have strong ties with Derbyshire and Staffordshire in fact.

I certainly had no intention to embarrass you. Its the way of us Brits to be silly which was what this excellent program was all about.

  • Comment removed

  • @clearly yes fair point I suppose I was being a bit pompous.

  • @ancientraver19881989 No problems.

  • So this is what Frankie Boyle looked like when he was a kid

  • why punk, the young ones and political correctness happened...this stuff was fucking dreadful

  • @manthefuckupdude <Enjoying the cricket you fat convict tosser?

  • God I love this show. Modern telly? You can stick it. Colin Compton was a prince of the realm.

  • @TheChapaqua Ha ha yeah and Indoor League with Fred Trueman ! Oh & it's Crompton isnt it ?

  • @TheChapaqua

I can remember when it was all fields. Young people today? And another thing.

  • @TheChapaqua Crompton with an R!

  • God,couldnt INVENT it could you ? what are youngsters on here thinking watching THIS ??!! ; i'm sure i saw Michael Heseltine further back in the audience, first at 2:30 then again before the end ; must have been to see how the other half lived !!

  • @kenfig I can see the facial resemblance but the hair's totally wrong. In those days Hezza's was still very blonde (almost as blonde as Boris Johnson), very straight and surprisingly long - well down to his shoulders!

  • @TheMightyHC So what, it'll DO for him ! ; i knew it's not really him anyway but there IS an appearance by the REAL Clement Attlee right of stage ; wouldnt think there would be so many politicians in would you ?

  • @kenfig I've had to look at this clip a few times to confirm that it actually IS the ex deputy PM!! What a great spot!!! He must have been having a well deserved break from singlehandedly dismantling British manufacturing industry.

  • @kenfig Heseltine didn't have a wavy/corrugated quiff. It was straight.

  • inshreds66- nope Colin had 3 kids Cheryl, Erica and John. Erica's my mum, was too soon bet he would of been an ace grandad :)

  • Some weird comments , northern humour - not funny ? . Considering 90% of

    comedians ,are northerners 1 .

  • @mark7325

Of course they are you stupid northern cunt.

  • @manthefuckupdude Who the hell let this southern windowlicker on the institutions computer ? . And less of the Northern ! .

  • Yes remember this as a child being on in our house and that man ringing that bell...

  • Comment removed

  • I asked for this for my birthday, for the PJ Proby, roy Orbison and Matt monro bits. Is Colin Compton Frank Skinners dad : ) ?

  • SO FAB BEST SHOW EVER , MORE MORE PLEASE

  • I remember that bloke with the bell.

  • Comment removed

  • @mark7325 Why was my comments removed ? not abusive or untrue .

  • Manning at his best here, he could be funny without being racist

  • This is a great dvd from a classic 70's T.V. show.I purchased it simply to see P.J.Proby sing "I know"...absolutely incredible!! Other highlights are Roy Orbison & Matt Monro. 250 minutes in total of good old fashioned entertainment!!

  • Looks a good series
