Haven't checked all the comments below on this track but the song is basically a parody on a pseudo-science book entitled "Supernature" by a one-hit wonder author Lyall Watson. The book became immensely popular in the 80's and APP obviously decided to record a critical commentary of the whole thing. One of the many stpuid ideas in the book was that you could keep your razor blades eternally sharp if you stored them at the centre of a scale model of the great pyramid of Cheops at Giza.
didn't read all the comments to check - but did anybody mention that when this tune was released, pyramids were very trendy? Everybody was buying them for good luck. Even the coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs (Red Kelly) tried to invoke Pyramid Power by putting them under the player's bench to improve their play - 1976.
when i heard "And the Mayan panoramas on my pyramid pyjamas haven't helped my little problem"" i was chewing cum i almost chocked to death its so funny
@TyRYANasaurus Wow, I love your anecdote! That is a wonderful and memorable way to discover this incredible band! Almost as mysterious as the album art and music on it!
PS: Doesn't the front AND back cover *totally* match the whole mood of the music?? Pyramid is my favourite APP cover art. If only Alan had worn Mayan panorama pajamas on it... :-/
its about how people arrange their life according to silly superstitions, lured because they believe it will solve all their problems (the topic of the song pretty much corroborates with "the turn of the friendly card" album)
@Sciochick , you're not the only one...the trend,as always, came later to countries like mine (Spain), so in the 80's we were all buying pyramids and all the rest...
Thank you! Have "I' Robot," "Pyramid," "Eve," and "Turn of a Friendly Card" on vinyl...thankd God for college days (now I'm dating myself.) Why aren't these on cd???
A 'silly song'? I would say..a 'clever song'. Typical of APP with all their albums..they take the basic subject matter of the concept that they are focussing on..and examine it from many different angles (No pun intended).
This song inspired me to investigate about the myths of the Pyramids; not the ones from Ancient Egypt's Pharaohs and Mythology, but those about their "magical" abilities ("You can keep the edge of a razor as sharp as an eagle's eye" - It's said that if you leave a razor or any other cutting element inside a Pyramid (most exactly the epicenter) it regenerates its edge)
One of my favourite albums ever, it sounds incredible and the compositions are inspired and have great arrangements. I pick it up every couple of months and I remember it note for note. I would take this cd to a deserted island :-)
Sounds very much like a tuba, but I am positive that this is an analog synthesizer. Those 16th notes would sound very different on a real tuba (not to mention that it would need a world class virtuoso player).
Alan Parsons began his career at Abbey Road as an assistant engineer. Over the years he would climb the ranks to engineer and later to producer. Along the way he worked on albums like "Abbey Road" by The Beatles, and "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd. 1976 was the year that The Alan Parsons Project brought his name to the front cover of an album
Yes but wasn't the worshipping of pyramids a tad on the retarded side too? So in that light the song is rather fitting. Laughter is the best response to insanity.
Una cancion de un album efectivamente despreciado pero genial como casi todo lo del Project. An underrated song in an underrated album, nevertheless, a great tune, as with almost everything The Project has done.
The Alan Parsons Project now has an official MySpace page. I can't put the URL here, but a search of The Alan Parsons Project on MySpace will take you to the official page, and the fansites of course.
I love this song :"all I ever get is a pain in the neck and a yap-yap"..."And the mayan panoramas on my pyramid pyjamas haven't helped my little problem"
You all should know Alan is the sound engineer on the extraordinary Dark Side Of the Moon from pink Floyd. He worked for the Fab Four also back in time. The greatest SE there is. Not to mention his awesome talent in music writing and sound researcher.....
I think this album is more about false hope than it is about anything masonic. Listen to the album and you`ll get a better feel for what this song is about. Are any of the APP albums not conceptual?
When it came out, it just seemed to be mocking the latest craze of the time. Pyramids were being claimed as the 'cure all' for everything from headaches to keeping razors sharp. The 1970s had a bunch of silly crazes, like pet rocks, mood rings and the movie "Jaws" ... pyramids were just one more and Alan Parsons had some fun with it. Hence, the laughable tone of the music.
Another fine piece of artwork from both Parsons and Hipgnosis as well for the album cover work. Remember the psychedelic poster that came with this LP ?
Oh my gosh, I kept looking at that title thinking, "I should know that song" then I watched (listened)and had great memories of college - APP, Pink Floyd, Styx, Monty Python, giggle!
There are pyramids in my head There's one underneath my bead And my lady's getting cranky Every possible location Has a simple explanation And it isn't hanky-panky I had read Somewhere in a book, they improve all your food and your wine It said, that everything you grow in your garden would taste pretty fine Instead, all I ever get is a pain in the neck and a Yap yap yap yap yap yap yap I've consulted all the sages I could find in the yellow pages But there aren't many of them
And the myan panoramas On my pyramid pajamas Haven't helped my little problem I've been told Someone in the know can be sure that his luck is as Good as gold, money in the bank and you don't even pay for it If you fold, a dollar bill in the shape of the pyramid that's printed on the back It's no lie You can keep the edge of a razor as sharp as an Eagle's eye, you can grow a hedge that is vertically straight over Ten feet high, all you really need is a pyramid and just a little luck
From memory it was along the lines of him putting a dollar in a pyramid and a pile of money appears, so he puts a girl in there and gets 7 girls and so on. It would be good to see it again.
I'm with JanovPre, I have waited AGES for some kind individual to upload this song. Thank you so much, colejordan123. Just wondering, is there a film clip for this song?
