As it says on Wikipedia, Hackett was the first to use the tapping technique in a rock context, though it did exist before that. So at least Wikipedia gives him credit. Not many people have heard "Return of the Giant Hogweed" or "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight" - two classic early Genesis tunes where Hackett made use of tapping. I believe there are others too but I could be wrong. It would have been nice if he played Hogweed in one of these videos...would be cool to hear it from the man himself.
@TheCorrectAnswer56 he also used it on his The musical box and fountain of salmacis solos, not sure about his pre genesis solo album Quiet World though.
Are you using a pick? Or just using your fingers? I use my fingers for most things but find some limitations with it - for example "tremolo picking" effects are difficult.
I'm not Steve but I can tell you it's in the regular tunning and it's fairly easy to play if you're confortable with playing with your fingers rather than a pick.
Steve was fingerboarding years before Eddie Van Halen appeared on the music scene, but for not getting more exposure on the radio, Steve doesn't get a lot of credit he truly deserves. Great musician, and sound inventor.
To me, Steve Hackett is the underrated version of Steve Vai. Idk, could be just me...but both very innovative and very amazing virtuoso guitar players. It's a shame that Hackett's name isn't household by now.
I always classify Mr. Hackett as the British Zappa (i.e. on of Vai's teachers) in terms of technique. Of course I am referring more to mechanics than style and taste though. Both of the above mentioned masters have very innovative and unique approaches to the instrument. That would correlate with you hearing Vai in Hackett.
The final 30 seconds of this video make me think of an alternate universe where Steve Hackett joins Bad Brains on second guitar after leaving Genesis.
Steve Hackett, Robert Fripp,Steve Howe,Jan Akkerman, ohhh!! long live to progressive rock, the self indulgent, magical and sometimes missunderstood genre
really great guitar technique Steve, thank you.....but more importantly-who does your hair.....-it looks great-you have aged/matured very well-well done!!
Steve more lessons please, could you please show us some 12 string Zematis guitar lessons. I've been waiting for you to start these for a long time. Ive done Narnia intro in D but when i looked at your Italian fan site tab it sounds nothing like it - the way i play it anyway !!! , please show me the light Oh Master. And you bloody are as well.
after watching this i had a dream that steve was my guitar teacher! Thats what you get for late night youtubing and too many cheese sandwitches at bedtime!
I saw Steve at the City Winery in NYC this summer. Bar far one of my favorite shows that I have ever been to; I sat literally 5 feet away from the band! He is such a wonderful man, and brilliant musician. Love you Steve!!
Very generous of you, Steve! Although I can't play a single note on strings, this must be awesome for would-be tappers. Might give it a shot someday ;-)
Great Stuff! I have been a student of Steve's guitar techniques for quite some time now. Especially his nylon pieces; at the moment. Ckeck out my channel to see some of my covers of his nylon pieces. Cavalcanti is one of my recent posts.
I love it. Steve hackett guitar playing is an inspiration for me and also for composition. Thank you for your explanation of your electric guitar techniques. Can you make a video explaining your tremolo nylon guitar technique? I wish one day i can play tremolo in the Spanish guitar. Also i am starting to play 12 string acoustic in the Genesis style.
Awesome and useful, thank you for the tutorial Steve!

Why would anyone dislike this? It's puzzling. I can see perhaps, passing on "like" but "dislike"? Odd. I think this is terrific!

@addictedtomarsbars Eddie has popularized it into the mainstream. Early-70s Genesis wasn't mainstream music (progressive rock wasn't mainstream)

This guy was the guitarist of Genesis and was doing that back in the 70's, far earlier than our friend Eddie
