Actually the driver is important. I know this is taking it to the extreme but my Dayton RS 100 will never play sub 80 hz as good as any 12 inch sub even if the sub is in a shitty prefab. You should rephrase it to any COMPETANT driver in a good enclosure will sound decent. Also factory locations mainly hurt imaging, but the tonality and FR will most likely be alot better. BTW "cheap" PE drivers aren't bad my front stage are from PE and I'd take them over alot of 500 car audio component sets :)
People ask these questions about subwoofers because they might be fairly new to the game. they just need a little help and guidance and tbh, you're not the right person for that. You should join RoE and see what I'm talking about. They have a forum for any question no matter how dumb it is and members answer politely and with the right guidance.
There is no one size fits all approach to car audio so you need to get that out of your head right now. While I agree that unless a set of passives is built for a specific vehicle it will be less than ideal but that's as far as I go. Active and passive systems both have their place in car audio. I run active and have a 10" in each front door with 2 layers of AT in/outer door skin, 1" acoustic foam, and ensolite.
Interesting views as usual Joe ... it's been a long time! One thing I never understand about the CA world is why people would waste money pointing speakers at their ankles!
