I am deeply involved in the science of bacterial conjugation. I would like to mention that WE THINK that DNA exchange between donor and recipient bacteria takes effect through conjugative pili. However, no body ever has been able to confirm that plasmids pass THROUGH these pili. No body was ever able to take a live image for or capture the DNA passage through these pili in real time. It's a long standing hope and until then, all that stuff remains just a hypothesis.
