I know there are various lyrics (revolving around the same basic story though), and I wondered if there was one traditional melody, since I heard three or four versions of it, and they all had the same tune. I'm thinking about doing my own version, see, and I don't want to 'steal' the tune from, say, Garmarna, if they made it up themselves.
You can get them a bit cheaper ($3000(usd)), but they have to be imported from europe or the uk for them to sound proper. You can't build a hg yourself without some knowledge. It's a big investment, but you'll have so much more fun when you get a good instrument in the beginning (counts for any instrument)

This song has nothing to do with the Pied Piper of Hamelin, what it is is a song about a troll who thinks she can become human by falling in love with and marrying a human. Herr Mannelig is who she falls in love with, but he does not love her in return (for obvious reasons), so she continually tries to win his love, but never succeeds.

It's a rental from a little orginisation in the Netherlands. ;) More info on the instrument can be found on Gotschy (dot) com. It's a nice little instrument but it was a bit squeeky to me. You should listen to instruments by Weichselbaumer, they're the best (and most expensive :P)

Yeah, but I just recently learned to scribe music (sort of), and it took me almost 2 hours to write down the 20 second intro song for Scanner Darkly... this will take me pretty much forever.
its quite expensive. A good hurdy gurdy costs about $1800 - $5000 ;) It just depends on where you buy them. I recommend you buy them from the maker him(/her)self because then you get the best prices. There must be at least one builder near Turkey...
it's not really hard to play, but hard to master. This because you have to do two totally different things, and sometimes the rythm you create with the chien isn't equal to the notes...

itll take a while, because i no longer have this instrument. And i might not get another of this type. I recorded a nice piece a few weeks ago, but when i wanted to edit the tape, i noticed the tape got damaged...
