  • Unique instrument the hurdy gurdy, dont think I've ever actually seen one before.

    Great video.

  • I am hurdy gurdy maker and teacher in Hungaria. I have hurdy gurdys from 1000 - 1200 Euro . You can see all on szerenyi.hu

    Szerényi Béla

  • Mooi!

    sehr schade!!!

  • Wath is this instrument?

  • Wonderful instrument, wonderful song, wonderful sound! Loved that video! Can you play Greensleeves?

  • Faan, imponerande! Gött mos!

  • too slow? oO that vid is for people who want to learn the song

  • Nice it*s an really interesting instrument i really like it because i hear a lot of in extremo. and i´ve ever asked me what for an instrument it is!xD

  • too slow

  • its swedish folk! xD

  • Looks like Russian folk sounds cool . Many thanks frm Aldeigja

  • This ain't russian folk.

  • me know but sounds very like :)

  • nice!!!

  • Isn't it a sweden song ? However, I like it, especially in Haggard's interpretation.

  • yupp it is.

  • You looked a bit unsure of which notes to hit in a few spots.

  • True, the whole finger placement is wrong. I'm using my thumb which is actually prohibited... D:

  • whats the instrument

  • hurdy gurdy

  • Hurdy Gurdy Clinic at the University of Minneapolis 2005

    watch?v=11j-lXCTZO4

  • so thats how its done eh? now where to find one.....so medieval. >:)

  • Comment removed

  • that music is a music of the haggard band?

  • they are just cover it

  • Haggard play this song, and is good that this bands promove this music, but this is a medieval folk song of germany

  • it`s out of tune

  • True.

  • 1500-1600euro? i d never saw this instrument for this price. i ve only saw it for 2500-4000euro oO

  • Sounds interesting, I've never heard from this, unless ppl built them on their own.

  • @Flavus22

  • Where did you buy this instrument? I´m seeking for a "drehleier" but i found nothing

  • I don't know wether my reply got filtered or not. Google screws up youtube... look for 'drehleier seite' "wer baut drehleiern". I get enough results on drehleier, but hurdy gurdy works fine too.

    This one is a Gotschy.

  • Thanks. Can you tell me how much does an normal Hurdy Gurdy costs? No special, something for beginners.

  • 1500-1600 EUR

  • @DarthDedi look at folkfriendsdotcom

  • @DarthDedi

Ich bin spanier Drehleier und Musikinstrumente bauer. Kannen Sie mir sehen in Google, schreiben Sie "Marino Gutiérrez"

  • Oh no, your ears!

  • This sounds awful. I don't say you do something wrong. Just... your instrument cries instead of singing.

  • BRAVO!!!! ][][][][][]

  • Can't make up my mind whether I like it or not, it certainly is unusual, could grow on you.

  • Thats your opinion... But I must agree, the sound quality is terrible ;)

  • work on ur tempo

  • or read the comment...

  • is it hard learning to play the hurdy gurdy?

  • Question for you: do you know if there is more than one melody to this song? I know there are various lyrics (revolving around the same basic story though), and I wondered if there was one traditional melody, since I heard three or four versions of it, and they all had the same tune. I'm thinking about doing my own version, see, and I don't want to 'steal' the tune from, say, Garmarna, if they made it up themselves.

  • I really have now idea. Please create a new version, that would kick ass!

  • Hmm :) Am playing and recording with my band tomorrow. We'll see how it turns out. Thanks <3

  • its an old traditional song so u wont be stealing anything

  • arn't hurdy gurdys 5,000$ and i knowe the sell build it yourself sets for 400$ is it easy to build...it's a beautiful instreament

  • You can get them a bit cheaper ($3000(usd)), but they have to be imported from europe or the uk for them to sound proper. You can't build a hg yourself without some knowledge. It's a big investment, but you'll have so much more fun when you get a good instrument in the beginning (counts for any instrument)

  • I got one question : Is it easy to learn Hurdy gurdy?

  • It's like a piano, it's actually a very early version of one. Playing the dog (chien/trumpet) is a bit tricky at first, but it's not that hard. Once you want to get more advanced rythm you really have to work hard.

  • Can the keys be played much faster?

  • Way way faster! I just didn't do that at the time for the 'instruction'.

  • Ah cool

  • Can someone from Sweden describe how the lyrics sounds to him/her? Is it hard for you to understand?

  • Hmm, I'm not sure if I know what you're meaning. It's not harder to understand than any other swedish song (except when it's sung by germans and others with bad pronunciation ;).

  • That's great!

Could you maybe post a Video where you say the lyrics of Herr mannelig so we can learn.

  • Just search for the Garmarna version of Herr Mannelig on YouTube. There you get the perfect (old)swedish pronounciation.

  • It sound.. well.. old. I can defenitly understand it, but some words have since then become obsolete (never used) or changed. But I as a swede can understand it =)

  • Tack för information. I only asked because if you look at New High German in comparison to Old High German it's not possible for a normal person to understand Old High German.

  • Beautiful!!!

  • Nice work. Love this exotic instrument. Your fingers look good as well.

  • Will sound nice run through a Granular synthesis modulator...

  • tune it!

  • should have, could have, don't have it anymore...

  • i want to have the chords for that song...

or better the tabs for guitarXD

can u tell me where tog et at least the chords?

google always just shows haggard stuff....

  • no idea. Just play by ear ;)

  • may you make this video again but with normal speed from the beginning?

just to enjoy the song ^^

  • Hmm, I have that somewhere on tape... I hope...

  • realy it s so cool !! thx

  • this instrument is really amazing

  • Das lied is sau gail

    In Extremo 4-Life^^

  • impresionante

Gutes Video 5 Sternchen

  • ja hamm die^^ aber laut is was anderes^^

  • cool instrument 5 stars

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!! THANX!

  • Das Instrument ist geil

    klingt fast wie ein Dudelsack

    genial

  • was is denn das für ein instrument?

  • Das ist ein drehleier. I think you should know that if you like In Extremo ;)

  • it still sounds great even with the mistakes- considering you are one of the few people who even plays it!

  • you're joking right? There must be thousands of ppl playing the HG.

  • lol- thousands- probably... out of the 7 billion on this planet- there aren't any that i know of where I live.

  • In a planet of billions I think saying that few people play this instrument is an accurate enough statement--you're an idiotic and hostile person for challenging the comment so.

  • mongolian bowing sounds similar for some reason. Probably the lower drone. And here I was looking for a Donovan song, I thought the hurdy gurdy was a wind instrument.

  • donovan sucks balls with that song.. i still have just a very slight idea why that song is called that way :s

  • donovan sucks balls in a lot of songs. I remembered hearing it when I was a kid and thought I would look it up when the name popped into my head. I think the song is a retelling of that pied piper of hamelin or whatever, not sure. In any case I like your playing and am pretty god damn jealous.

  • lol, i suck at that time

  • well thankyou for playing a rare instrument, some disappear forever.

  • This song has nothing to do with the Pied Piper of Hamelin, what it is is a song about a troll who thinks she can become human by falling in love with and marrying a human. Herr Mannelig is who she falls in love with, but he does not love her in return (for obvious reasons), so she continually tries to win his love, but never succeeds.

  • you missed out on a part of a conversation, but I was talking about a song from the 60's called "hurdy Gurdy Man" by a scottish guy named Donovan. Thankyou for the information about this particular song though, I did not know that. If you happen to now what the donovan song is about feel free to let me know!

  • is dem kalt das er so lang angezogen is oder wie??? aber sonst spielt er saugeil gg

  • gloopen hagen sleepsdes sdjf

  • Hi man, great vid!!

Where have u gotten ur hurdy gurdy??

I play also medieval and folk music

    Greetings!

  • It's a rental from a little orginisation in the Netherlands. ;) More info on the instrument can be found on Gotschy (dot) com. It's a nice little instrument but it was a bit squeeky to me. You should listen to instruments by Weichselbaumer, they're the best (and most expensive :P)

  • THanks dude! Ive taken a look on the website. BTW You play great ;-)

  • iie, zen zen

  • what is this insrament calld iv never seen one befor very interesting?

  • The instrument is called a Hurdy Gurdy (ENG) --> Vielle à Roue (FR) --> Draailier (NL) and probably some other names.

  • Dreleier in german :P

  • what an interesting instrument

  • these were like pretty much the first keytars

  • Herr Mannelig herr mannelig troloven i mig.... !

Den bästa version är fran "Galtagaldr"

  • yhee! Go sweden!!! heja svirge

  • Well they're german give 'em a break ;)

  • I heard Herr Mannelig first performed by In Extremo, then by Haggard.. and i prefer In Ex one :D

    Nice song

  • in extremo doesnt pronounce the words right

  • it s primary called Mandali others aer fake dude xP

  • i dont think you get the term mandali... but pls explain what you mean by this?

  • Where did this comment come from? Mandali, that I know of, have nothing to do with this video. For what I know this term originated from a "cult" group that lived as disciples forming a circle of hierarchy around a messianic type figure, not an instrument. I'm glad I read your comment though. Now I'm gonna have to look it up.

  • You chose a challenging Swedish melody and a favorite of mine. I first heard this song performed by an excellent band called Garmarna. You might want to check them out. Good work and keep playing that wonderful hurdy gurdy!

  • Yeah Garmarna is the best!

  • Hail Garmarna! their version of this song is awesome.

  • Germania ist einen Ausdruck Hitler hat benützt.

  • Hitler gave germany a pretty bad name.

  • oh and i kinda stopped playing in february xD

  • haggard is the most classic version. I try to collect all versions of HM. I really like the wolfenmond version.

  • so huh whaz that?????

  • awesome <3

never heard/seen such an instrument but i love it :D

it realy sounds like the song <3

  • Thems some long-ass fingers

  • lol

  • I knew hurdy gurdy the song, now i know the instrument. sweetness.

  • Nice instrument! And I personally love that song. I play the violin, but where did you get the sheet music for that? Haven't had any luck finding it.

  • google

  • where!? I can't find anything except for this one crappy computer-made sheet that lasts about three lines; its barely even sheet music...

  • Can't tou just pick out the song from the video? I will so I can play it on my concertina.

  • Yeah, but I just recently learned to scribe music (sort of), and it took me almost 2 hours to write down the 20 second intro song for Scanner Darkly... this will take me pretty much forever.

  • But you can see the fingering on the video, the button are like those on a piano. (I think).

  • Maybe... but I know violin and only violin.

  • cool

  • what a good instrument...

what is this instruments cost? How much many? Is it expensive?

  • its quite expensive. A good hurdy gurdy costs about $1800 - $5000 ;) It just depends on where you buy them. I recommend you buy them from the maker him(/her)self because then you get the best prices. There must be at least one builder near Turkey...

  • btw i used $ but you cn read € here as well ;) I know the minimum is about €1500. New video soon! (i hope tomorrow)

  • HurdyGurdy, Swedish style...

  • i love it's sound...

unfortunately here in greece there aren't instruments like this!

  • hail brother dragon you are no bad with this instrument. why don't Looking for a beutiful voice and make a song

  • hard to play?

  • it's not really hard to play, but hard to master. This because you have to do two totally different things, and sometimes the rythm you create with the chien isn't equal to the notes...

  • thats goood my teacher is a owner too of this instrument ... !!! Greatings from Germany ...

  • du bist ja voll Dumm

  • what do you mean by that? And why would you even say such a thing..

  • So you keep saying this is old and stuff, well I want to see a recent version of you playing this song! Because this one is great, I'd be curious to see how much better you can make it!

  • WAAA! I'm really busy with school and stuff, going crazy!!! (not really but i'm quite busy so... and with my upcomming course so, patience...)

  • I'm Irish, patience isn't in my vocabulary! *slams hammer into monitor*

Ok ok fine, have it your way! I will wait >:(

  • it's easy ;-)

  • hmm, i see this vid is over a year old now...

  • But still quite awesome. :)

  • thx ;)

  • Finally, a video of somebody who can actually play this instrument properly. Good job on the grace notes.

  • lol thanks, but this video is so old and the technic is very poor ;) I'll upload a newer version in a while

  • Well I mean given you were a beginner at the time, it's better than most videos I see on here.

  • Waow 5/5..

  • thanks, but i really need to delete this movie...its almost a whole year old

  • can you please tune drones specially for a video

  • itll take a while, because i no longer have this instrument. And i might not get another of this type. I recorded a nice piece a few weeks ago, but when i wanted to edit the tape, i noticed the tape got damaged...
