@skippinchicken How do you know my dad???? And if you know him you will know me! I absalutly agree with what you said about the army and goverment cuts It was a rreal shame that this wass there last time perfoming as 16 peice regimental band. The music was brilliant. I watched this at hme with my mum and it was one of the most proudest moments of my life...
The only reason the cav bands were featured, is that, it was to be the last time we would see 16 regt all together( government cuts )After that its just got worse, if they could have saved on their expences we would still have an army to be proud of..!
That might have something to do with the 1991 Royal Tornament being themed to the Year of the Horse, hence why it is the then Massed bands of the Cavalry Regiments playing
I wish they would bring the RT back. It shows are history, it also shows how disciplined are troops are.
I used to love watching this when i was a kid. the only way to see anything remotly like this is Trooping the Colour/Queens Birthday or the Edinburgh Tattoo, niether of which are as good.
@pghj2005 Some good news for you then, the government are bringing this back and the first event will take place this December. It won't be called the Royal tournament though as the Queen hasn't yet given it the Royal title. Google the British millitary tournament.
@bullseye2121 OMG that is brilliant news, thak you so much for telling me. I realy hope it is televised. If not i might have to kill someone for their ticket, LOL!
I am very proud to say I was here! 9th/12the 9th 12th Princial Tuba player ( 4.03 ) I was only a Young Lad and this was ´´MAGIC´´ to me. David Dawkins (MR BEAN)
RAC bands, Brilliant, as you'd expect, took part in the 1975 tournament as a member of the massed RAC bands, my band being 4th/7th RDG, best finale ever,???, anyone know if its on dvd at all
Excellent video. Thank you . Sorry to learn that the downsizing of the British military has affected so many of these fine bands. We in New York City area lost our 26th US Army Band years ago for the same reason. As for the direction that both our nations are now headed, I can only say that it appears the inmates are running the asylum.
@englishman2000 i find this band music very boring it would have been better if the massed pipes and drums of the scottish regiments had also been included.but, obviously that will never happen as the southerners cant abide the scottis,
I played there in a Sea Cadet band in 1964; What an experience! It was scrapped because it was excellent and "New Labour" despises excellence. They didn't scrap the Edinburgh Tattoo, though, too many Scottish votes to be lost. Now they want to "promote" the Armed Forces - bloody left-wing lunatics! Bring back our Royal Tournament!!!
They coudn't scrap the Edinburgh tattoo. The Edinburgh Tattoo is run by an independent company who merely employ the people who perform. This was run by the armed forces. don't get me wrong i 100% agree that it should never have gone!!
@xedol Utter rubbish. It was scrapped because it cost too much money that was felt could be put to better use by (not) buying better equipment for the fighting forces of the army.
However, it is a real shame that, firstly, the bands of the Royal Armoured Corps have been diluted so pathetically: and, secondly, such focus displays of our military dexterity has been eroded from the public view (and any potential enemy).
Brilliance...on par witht he Edinburgh Militart Tatoo which "New Labour" could not scrap because we would have revolted and kicked them out of Scotland for ever, which looks like happening anyway....... SOAR ALBA
Bring the Royal Tournament back. I was in RAF and was at this one. Was only an usher showing public to their seats but got to see every show which was a total of about 30 in the 3 weeks it was on. Never got bored of it. One of my best memories of it was seeing Princess Diana with William & Harry when they came to watch one of the shows. Its a shame that it was stopped as it was a show that was enjoyed by all those who watched it & took part in it.
Great Britain, United Kingdom or whatever you want to call it, is still great. The people make it great and those in the video are some of those people. Let's not worry whether we're great or not - we just fucking are ok???
I was on this..& on the Video.. Alto Sax..13th/18th Royal Hussars (QMO)..Still in.!!!....Light Cavalry Band Bovington..only 1 of 2 RAC bands left....Kinda Sad really isnt it...seein this..all my mates..what we were..!!.!!!!!!.
What an impressive sight! All of the regimental bands here have now gone, except the life guards mounted band. I can see, among others, the RSDG, 1QDG, 16/5 QRL, RTR. All have gone! I see that the mounted band has a full size BBb tuba - unheard of now and almost impossible to play on a horse, I warrant?
I wish you were right but, sadly, both the RSDG and QDG bands have gone. In the early 1990s, they were amalgamated, together with the 4/7DG, to form the Dragoon Guards Band. There were then 4 bands in the RAC - Dragoon Guards, Lancers, Dragoons and Tanks (RTR Cambrai Band).
Oh i thought the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards band existed still at least, they were at the Edinburgh Tattoo this year and were announced as the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards
This misunderstanding has arisen because the RSDG Pipe Band does still exist and usually appears at the Edinburgh Tattoo. It is the regimental band which has gone - the pipes & drums are a separate organisation. The only regiments which still have a reginental band and a pipe band are the Scots Guards, Irish Guards and Brigade of Gurkhas.
These have now also been amalgamated and we now have only 2 bands in the RAC - The Light Cavalry Band and the Heavy Cavalry & Cambrai Band (HCC Band). Over the course of 10 years, 16 bands in the RAC have been reduced to 2! The QDG Band, for example, was more than 300 years old but this counted for nothing when the planners got to work - a sad reflection on the attitude to tradition in this country!
I'm a Yank, Hockey, and i completely agree with you. It's a shame that both of our countries are headed in the direction they are... Great Britain now instating Sharia courts... honestly? and the United States unwilling to uphold its own Constitution... What sad times two once great nations have fallen upon. God Bless the United States, and God Save the Queen.
show this to a teenager these days and he will look at you like you are an idiot. They have no idea of pride and honour. I only ever saw one of these shows when I was young, but it was outstanding. Shows like this remind us what was great about great britain, since the pompus/human right orientated/foreigners who want to change this country to make it better for them etc have come along, we are merely Britain now. Such a shame what was once the greatest country in the world has been bastardised.
It was cancelled because the rank and file are not allowed to show support to the Queen. We are not allowed by the US Gov NOT to be air strip one. Foxtrot Oscar to the Romans, Foxtrot Oscar to the Germans and Foxtrot Oscar to nincompoops (quess who).
I agree with the comments that have been posted how can you not feel that goose bump factor when u see the pageantry that this country has and could still produce
I was at the 1991 Royal Tournament at the tender age of 7! Its a pity this ever finished! The Dressing and the Drill is as always superb, Its a shame that most of these bands and indeed regiments have gone, and this from lesser known regiments of the British Army instead of the Guards Division. It Proves to the world why Great Britain is best for Pomp and Pagentry! BRING BACK THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT!
It's amazing they can perform without at least 1 Drum Major to give commands. Just look at the execution of the turn on the counter march with no command - perfect simultaneous turn by the front rank - they must be counting paces as well music??? Fantastic!
This was the massed bands of the Royal Armored Corps at the 1991 Royal Tournmanet. Everyone who saw this show knew this was the last hurrah for many of these bands. Over 15 bands are to be seen in a kaleidoscope of pageantry and color. Today only two bands remain after the recent Blair cuts. These are the Light Cavalry Band and the Heavy Cavalry Cambrai Band. About 70 musicians compared to what you see here. The Royal Tournmant met its demise a few years later in 1999.
