The breakage was not normal. That was a metallugy problem. Hope you got a satisfactory replacement. Have you batoned the Mora in the same location? Better comparison.
Good luck on future US made knives next time. stonenstrop
@stonenstrop Yes, I got a replacement. I had to use the Mora to finish the job. I just could not split the log straight down the middle, because the Mora's blade was not long enough.
This is funny people always tend to think there is something wrong with the blade when it breaks but if you were batoning incorrectly then its no surprise, if your blade is not level with the handle while batoning then the blade will snap so be careful.
@chicken4247 There is no excuse for a big knife to break while batoning wood, unless it is crappy quality, which this cold-steel obviously was... I dont care how hard he was hitting that knife, steel should always win against wood.. The tang compared to the size of the blade on that coldsteel is an absolute joke! "Made in China" is NEVER a good thing either...
@v5u7sulh2 But it's not simply steel vs. wood. It's steel vs. friction and moment. There's a lot of shock to the blade and the cold does make metal a lot more brittle, especially if it's the wrong metal or if it's been tempered wrong for those conditions.
@losteden I will look at the VG1. I am currently using the Buck Hoodlum. I have been looking at the Trailmaster in San Mai, as I miss my trailmaster. But I do not miss it breaking.
Thats a FAKE Trailmaster. Cold Steel never produced Trailmasters in China. I can see that it says China on the blade. That was NOT manufactured by Cold Steel
@thelostnumber1997 I am not sure you are correct on the made in China comment. Below is the direct quote from the Cold Steel web site faqs page. "Q: Where are Cold Steel products made? Our products are manufactured world wide. Most items are made in Japan, USA, Taiwan, or China. "
@mudtoa Some of their other products may be made in China, but the Trailmaster was only made in Japan and Taiwan. Original ones were made of Carbon V steel, the newer ones are made of SK-5. I did a lot of research when I got mine in the mail because it didn't look like the pictures on the website. It turned out to be real. You should call Cold Steel, they would be able to tell you for sure. But Im 99.99% sure you got a knock off.
do they replace your knife or do you have to buy a new one? bro i have to tell you, you seem verry calm even the knife broke, i would has been so piss!!! just cursing everyone and everything, but you keept your cool, that good!!! god bless Daniel
@mudtoa Ok, thanks I thought this wouldn't happen with an SK-5 model, this steel is tougher than the older Carbon V. There have been some relates issues with the Carbon V models.
@AnDrETNP What is the coldest temp you have used it in? Mine had no problems until I used it in the cold. It was my favorite knife up until it failed.
Looks like the "steel" got too "cold" ;o) ... hope they replaced it!
steintanz 3 weeks ago
@steintanz Yes, it has been replaced. I will post a follow up vid, once I have further tested the new trailmaster.

@v5u7sulh2 I was not hitting it hard. In the cold it broke like sun rotted plastic.

Why does it say China?
ZMAvid 1 month ago
@ZMAvid Because it was made in China. The replacement Trailmaster Cold Steel sent me has Made in Taiwan on it, and the blade is not coated/painted.

@mudtoa You should get a Fallkniven, Becker BK-2 or ESEE ESSE-5. Or just get a Busse Battle Mistress. They're sexy. And basically indestructible.

Is you trailmaster the Sk-5 model or the Carbon V?
I have a recon scout for about 2 years now. It has seen alot of abuse, and it's stil going fine
Take care

So, then, "Cold" Steel couldn't take the cold?
LOL
Thanks for posting this. I'll be avoiding Cold Steel knives from now on.
