The problem isn't tourneys or tourney players. The problem is Smash being as shitty franchise and Smash fans, whether tourney players or not, refusing to acknowledge the problem.

For the most part, the "tourney tards" aren't forcing you to play in a restrictive way; they simply implement it in tournaments. And I've never actually met or known anyone who forced people to play this way. No one can stop you from playing the way you want.

It's that they have huge pompous rods up their asses about playing a game so differently than the way that it was clearly made to be played that they're easy to make fun of. They play SSB like it's Guilty Gear and even admit that the game isn't fit for competition without their stupid rules. They should just play a fighter designed for competitive play. They also mock everyone who doesn't play their way. They deserve it.
@eatenbyrobots who is "they"? are you talking about players at a tournament that you attended? Players that are arguably the most respected voices in the Melee community? or are you talking about some low-level scrubs that have biased views about the competitive scene?
there are differences between the Smash series and a traditional fighter, some differences being more appealing to Smash players. There is no game designed to have the qualities of both Smash and a purposely competitive game.
@GuardianOfTheKey also, why does every player that plays a game have to play it the way it was "intended" to be played? one thing I like about video games is that there isn't always one way to play, the players and the community often end up reinventing how to play video games.
and which rules strike you as truly being "stupid"? for the first couple years of Melee, most rules had items and a very wide range of stages. The rules have adapted to the changes in the Melee competitive scene.
Using the resources given to you is adapting. Items change the battlefield, giving new opportunities to gain an advantage. Removing items does not show off "true skill". It shows off one's ability to utilize one aspect of the game. A truly skilled player should be able to maintain an advantageous position in any circumstances. If a Starman throws off your game, you really shouldn't be playing. I had no issue when the original came out when I was *10* (hint: fucking dodge the one who gets it).
Just like you shouldn't be playing if you rely on a starman to win.
Explain to me how you can adapt to a random exploding box/ random starman appearing for the other player. You DON'T. How can you adapt to something that is random? It make matches unfair. Using items doesn't show true skill at all. You can't determine who is the truly better player because items are random. Without items, it's just you and the opponent. making the match as fair as possible.
@StriCNYN3 One would think that, what with items being random and all, a mach wherein they're allowed would still come down to the skill of the individual player. It's not like items inherently favor one player over the other. You have just as much of an opportunity to take them and use them as your opponent does, and if you can't, then you need to be able to adapt your play-style to compensate. Taking out items because you're unable to do that reflects worse on you than it does the game, dude.
@Cyberxion But when you have items like a starman which gives you invincibility, it completely changes the flow of the match, and the loosing player can quickly take a stock. And if it were a close match between two players, then the loosing player with the star would win only by the star, and only because he was lucky.
It's best to turn all that off if you're playing competitively. If not then hell yea, put all the items on =). But to see who's the better player, turn them off. that's all =)
@NihilistDandy 3. Items make the fighting oversimplified and edgeguarding becomes too easy. (ex. just knock them off the stage and throw a bomb, bat, bumper or anything when their jumping back, if they airdodge they'll fall, if they take the hit they'll fall). Real skill is when you win only by your own doing, not the game giving you lucky chances.

This video sums up with how i feel about 99% of the tourneytards out there. They might as well hack the game and disable every feature in the game, remove items completely and just make fox the only character available and final destination the only selectable stage.
If i wanted to play a game that didn't have items and was on a final destination like stage, i'd play a street fighter game.

@HiJackMan18 The video and the joke itself was created by players who dislike the competitive scene, which sought to create a more fair environment based more upon the skill of the players, rather than the random events that are the items. For the most part, the "tourney tards" aren't forcing you to play in a restrictive way; they simply implement it in tournaments. And I've never actually met or known anyone who forced people to play this way. No one can stop you from playing the way you want.

@GuardianOfTheKey It's not that they're forcing anyone to play their way. It's that they have huge pompous rods up their asses about playing a game so differently than the way that it was clearly made to be played that they're easy to make fun of. They play SSB like it's Guilty Gear and even admit that the game isn't fit for competition without their stupid rules. They should just play a fighter designed for competitive play. They also mock everyone who doesn't play their way. They deserve it.

@eatenbyrobots who is "they"? are you talking about players at a tournament that you attended? Players that are arguably the most respected voices in the Melee community? or are you talking about some low-level scrubs that have biased views about the competitive scene?
there are differences between the Smash series and a traditional fighter, some differences being more appealing to Smash players. There is no game designed to have the qualities of both Smash and a purposely competitive game.

@GuardianOfTheKey also, why does every player that plays a game have to play it the way it was "intended" to be played? one thing I like about video games is that there isn't always one way to play, the players and the community often end up reinventing how to play video games.
and which rules strike you as truly being "stupid"? for the first couple years of Melee, most rules had items and a very wide range of stages. The rules have adapted to the changes in the Melee competitive scene.

Using the resources given to you is adapting. Items change the battlefield, giving new opportunities to gain an advantage. Removing items does not show off "true skill". It shows off one's ability to utilize one aspect of the game. A truly skilled player should be able to maintain an advantageous position in any circumstances. If a Starman throws off your game, you really shouldn't be playing. I had no issue when the original came out when I was *10* (hint: fucking dodge the one who gets it).

Explain to me how you can adapt to a random exploding box/ random starman appearing for the other player. You DON'T. How can you adapt to something that is random? It make matches unfair. Using items doesn't show true skill at all. You can't determine who is the truly better player because items are random. Without items, it's just you and the opponent. making the match as fair as possible.
Real players don't need items.

@StriCNYN3 One would think that, what with items being random and all, a mach wherein they're allowed would still come down to the skill of the individual player. It's not like items inherently favor one player over the other. You have just as much of an opportunity to take them and use them as your opponent does, and if you can't, then you need to be able to adapt your play-style to compensate. Taking out items because you're unable to do that reflects worse on you than it does the game, dude.

@Cyberxion But when you have items like a starman which gives you invincibility, it completely changes the flow of the match, and the loosing player can quickly take a stock. And if it were a close match between two players, then the loosing player with the star would win only by the star, and only because he was lucky.
It's best to turn all that off if you're playing competitively. If not then hell yea, put all the items on =). But to see who's the better player, turn them off. that's all =)

@NihilistDandy 3. Items make the fighting oversimplified and edgeguarding becomes too easy. (ex. just knock them off the stage and throw a bomb, bat, bumper or anything when their jumping back, if they airdodge they'll fall, if they take the hit they'll fall). Real skill is when you win only by your own doing, not the game giving you lucky chances.
