It was only a 4th set tiebreaker and a fifth set at the French Open final away from being a calender Grandslam year for Fed in 2006.
Not many remember that the French Fed-Rafa final in 2006 was really close: 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6.
That was probably the closest French open Fedal final until 2011: 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1.
Anyway his record in 2006 was an astounding 92-5. He won Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open, The Year-End Championship, Indian Wells, Miami, Canada, Madrid, Tokyo, Halle, and Basel!
This 2006 Aussie Open was one of Federer's toughest slams to win, he had to beat Tommy Haas in 5 sets, Nikolay Davydenko in 5 sets, and almost went down 2 set to none in the final, but he pulled it out.
this match is a prime example of why i used to say i loved seeing federer in a bit of a hole - it was facinating watching him work his way out of it. nowadays though, once hes in a hole, rarely will he find a way like just a few years ago. great match, magnificent to watch.
He had 2 serious injuries on his hand and leg! I think its only natural that he loses his top position.
But now he is back on top shape and he won the Sydney tournament 2 days ago and now he is ready for the Australian Open. He won 17 of his last 18 matches i think too.
He is gonna be as tough as ever.
He beat Leyton Hewit just like that 3 days ago!
This year we will see the Old Marcos for his comeback!
Today I saw the horrible injury Marcos suffered at the Ordina Open in Den Bosch, The Netherlands.. It is such a shame that a great talent like Marcos has been so unlucky with injuries the past years. I hope to see him on the court again soon.
he came awefully close to a grand slam year in both 2006 and 2007...made all 4 finals, winning 3, and taking a set 6-1 from nadal in 2006 RG final, and 6-4 in 2007 final...
