@plusmin09 just a minute - I've played so many free gigs in LA that were supposed to have "press" there and "celebrities" and "connections" and all that B*S*.
You know what, you can make decent money playing in the Subway in NY, and although probably not enough to live on, the ACTUAL EXPOSURE, to ACTUAL CROWDS (no matter how inattentive), is priceless, because there's a chance that a percentage of that crowd will be interested, listen, care, and perhaps follow the band.
