A complete fox.... I'm a pro musician (piano) doing the big bands every night and she has my vote as best OVERALL female vocalist of the time. Of course the Modernaires need no accolades. I would have married her in a second.
when she joines glenns outfit she was only 17 so glenn and helen (his wife) became miss huttons legal guardians til she turned 18 !!! thats a true fact because i asked paul tanner in person and he said yes that s true !!! i have spoken with him several times over the phone since the mid 90s
oh. i don't know much, but i do know that my favorite version of my dreams are gettin' better all the time is marion's in the movie in society. i have doris' version as well, but i prefer marion's. that song should bounce.
also, in the glenn miller movies like orchestra wives, lynn bari lip syncs, the real singer sings.
Great job finding this old footage of Marion: she was the cutest. I don't think she really cared enough about her career to really work at it, but she managed to be part of some of the most memorable recordings of the era. I love these songs, and haven't seen most of these clips, other than the "Orchestra Wives" footage. I love Ray Eberle's singing too - as much or better than his brother Bob's.
Marion was good mostly doing novelty songs but the best of the band singers was Helen Forrest. She sann with Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and finally Harry James. Then did duets with Dick Haymes. My Dreams are Getting better All The Time. A big hit when Doris Day sang with the Les Brown band. The Big Bands Era was so great.
Let's concede that Helen was ONE of the best "canaries." I think Martha Tilton and Doris Day--among others, but in particular--sang exceptionally well.
Love Martha Tilton on "And the Angels Sing" and Loch Lomand. They are all great singers, just different. I don't think any of them have the sparkle in the eyes like Marion does though :)
@Georgewos I would argue that Jo Stafford was the greatest, not as much of a big band singer, but her version of "Long ago and far away" is indisputably the best.
@Georgewos -- Helen Forrest, described as "The Voice of the Big Bands," had the most prolific recording career of the "canaries" and sang with the very best bands. However, I don't agree that she was "the best" canary. I'd give that to Peggy Lee, who had a long recording career that stretched five decades beyond her start with Benny Goodman. In fact, Starbucks just released a compilation CD of her work that "hit the charts" which ties Frank Sinatra's 6 hits in 6 separate decades record.
Depends upon where you look..Radioactive man, a character of the 40's/50's (a little late for that tune) used to howl "Up and ATOM".. The phrase was taken from "up and AT EM", meaning get ready to fight etc..Seeing as the copyright for "People like you and me" was 1942, obviously they didn't know about the bomb.. The US Govt would have been very upset had they :)
My point is the phrase took on a whole new meaning.
@annanoli Don't hear it. I'm listening in my project studio with a set of Genelec 8040 and I don't hear it. Put the phones on (Sony 7506) and still don't hear it.
The Hutton Girls had a lot going for them. But I always suspected that Marion had more to offer musically. I hope that does not take away from her talented sister whom i love dearly.
Wow, one of the most beautifulest voices I've ever heard. I love the 40's sound! Sheer heaven :D

@Georgewos -Your opinion. She had more going on than any of those broads. She was hotter and what a stage presence. She would be a star today.

Back when ladies were ladies, music had lyrics that could be sung to 3rd graders etc.
Love the lingo!
Gobs doing their jobs (sailors)
Up and atom (the bomb)..
etc...
Marion is a babe, no doubt...
The guy on the left with his pants up to his neck looks a little off though.,...
Great stuff...the full version of OW is on YouTube as well.Audio is not as good as this one...GREAT JOB!
Love you Marion!
Wish you were *my* mama!

Now hear this. Listen to People Like You And Me:
When Tex Beneke takes in i'm pretty sure that Paula Kelly is in too. Notice the different female voices at 2:25 and 2:28 ?
Marion was slightly out of tune in many songs, but she's so charming that we forget it!

Thanks so much for posting this! Marion deserves more attention paid to her - what a doll!
Buddy deSylva, Betty's producer at Paramount wanted to team the two sisters in a musical.
What a shame it never happened!
