  • i read that they are considered to closely resemble the ancestor of all carniovora (dogs, cats, weasel, bears etc...)

  • I read the same information 25 years ago and for 100 years, the scientific community believed that to be the case. However, recently, DNA testing proved that the Fossa is a highly evolved mongoose that occupies an apex niche in it's environment. For example, the clouded leopard, a real cat, occupies the same position in Borneo. Although they are not closely related, the clouded leopard and the Fossa occupy the same niche, appear similiar, and act similarly but are genetically different.

  • @MrCarlosmonzon so it's not a "living fossil" then? ah that's too bad but it's a great animal none the less. thanks for the info!

  • The fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) (pronounced /ˈfuːsə/[2][3] or /ˈfɒsə/) is a mammal endemic to Madagascar. A member of family Eupleridae, it is closely related to the mongoose. It is the largest mammalian carnivore on the island of Madagascar. (The largest carnivore on Madagascar is the Nile crocodile.)
