This is just the hib tone version with effects added and various track being brought up and down. It was included on their early demo tape that came out before the single.
This is the garden of the Reverend Howard Finster, a preacher, an artist, a musician and a painter. In fact, he painted the covers of REM's "Reckoning" and Talking Heads' "Little Creatures". Great talent.
I believe 2 remix versions came out of the studio, this version and Hib-Tone Producer Johnny Hibbert's version. Hibbert's version ended up on the first single and Easter's version (this version?) was released on an album at a later date. THANKS FOR THE POST!
Your first comment reminded me of an cool REM story.
In 82 they worked on demos with a producer who was known for his synth pop production. He made Bill drum to a click track, which he couldn't do well, and frustrated him greatly.
The story goes that the producer did some 'post-production' on the recording of Catapult they did with him, adding a bunch of synths over the recording...apparently the band was pretty horrified and said they never wanted anyone to hear it and shelved it...and so far it hasn't been bootlegged.
Outstanding. Kind of sums them up, though, doesn't it? Firmly places them in the 'owner-definer' league of epoch-makers (you know, like the Beatles, Bowie and the Buzzcocks).
Thanks for your passion, mate. Makes it worthwhile using this thing.
I saw this video in a VHS REM anthology I rented back in the '80s. Makes me miss Bill Berry, who retired after suffering a brain hemorrhage in the early '90s. Great also to be reminded of REM's early days as experimenting Georgia hippies.
This remix dates to the recording of the first single, it was done by Mitch Easter at the time. I love it and thought other people would wanna hear it.
awsome, I want the original now!

i thought there was a hib-tone single and then a re-recording... i had no idea these studio clips existed...
is this a "dub dub", like personal remix or a true dub of various studio components?

This was kind of a 'mess around' remix...Mitch Easter's proper mix is on Eponymous.

This sounds like a sort of a Men Without Hats mix. Which in itself is not that bad a thing. But REM? Nah.

I mainly like the isolating boosting of the individual instruments...hearing the song as a whole for years made it that much cooler to hear this.

Cool comment - cheers for that. Meant no negativity. I kinda like this and, after all, I'm just Joe Public (no musician!).
They are great though, aren't they?
