Love the bass sound on this song. But I think the song on the whole would have been better if they used guitars to a bare minimum with some echo-effects and let the bass drive the song completely.
Interesting to see where they came from, but I think they were better once they established their own style, which turned out to be pretty unique, cos after twenty years of bending my ear with whatever I could find, I'm sure now that the 1990's Pumpkins aint never gonna be replaced.
At 2:48 you start to hear the same whiny high pitched voice that sang Suffer, Mayonnaise, Starla, Bodies, Apples And Oranges, Stand Inside Your Love, and Cash Car Star. I love that signature whine. That sound was and is so unique that when you hear it even for a second you know you're listening to The Smashing Pumpkins.
At 2:48 you start to hear the same whiny that sang Mayonnaise, Disarm, and Tonight Tonight I love that signature whine. That sound was and is so unique that when you hear it even for a second you know you're listening to The Smashing Pumpkins.
can anyone tell me where to find these post-punk songs from 80s era Smashing Pumpkins? are they on any officially released albums or will I just have to find bootlegs?
LOL. Wow you're dumb. I'm the last person to judge someone based on their gender. She isn't a great bass player. Does she get the job done? Yes. Is she amazing? Absolutely not. Could I see the band with anybody else? No. The band was perfect as they were together, as a unit.
I remember seeing some of this footage during Viewphoria, but Billy was talking and the was no sound for the music... so cool to actually see AND hear what they were playing back then.
Also, I'm a huge Jimmy Chamberlin fan. It is amazing to see how far someone can come. He almost sounds like he's just learning to play the drums here... far cry from what the man can do now!
dude, no...Jimmy was a monster even here, it's just that he was a jazz drummer trying to get a feel for rock (typically rock music is simpler...he hadn't quite explored the possibilities with these mellow songs).
Also the pumpkins were trying their hand at the whole "new wave" thing...they soon found out that they were a "rock band"
Check out "The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex" it's sort of a solo outing. Just Jimmy and guest musicians (including Billy on a track or two.) You will hear the jazz there. Check out the song "streetcrawler" on youtube.
Those Fender Mustangs and Jazzmasters where so cheap in the 80's because nobody wanted them. The pawnshops were the place to go. In the 80's brightly colored guitars (hair metal) were the rage. But once Nirvana broke out, the prices went through the roof.
This is a very rare video indeed. Billy is playing a Mustang. He use to use Mustangs alot actually (you can see him play them in video when he was in the Marked). He stopped playing them after grunge he said because by then it was too clique.
Billy Corgan had claimed to be a fan of Joy Division and I never really figured out why until I heard this. This song sounds heavily influenced by Joy Division. Kudos Billy.
sounds like there's a U2/Love and Rockets thing goin on here. Also, billy has a voice here! makes u wonder y he's kept it hidden for 20 years with all the in/out nasal/throat and high/low stuff.
I love the pumpkins, but I think Darcy is one of the most mediocre bassists in music. If you want good basslines listen to The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division . . . many other bands. Pumpkins was just more guitar/drum driven. Still love Darcy and the band tho.
They turned into goth to psychodelic music in 1989. Billys love to goth music comes from 1985 with the marked and in 1989 he started getting more into psychdelic music.
Can you find any like downloads of the MArked or any EPs by them? My friend has heard them and says they are really good but I've never been able to find anything from them :(
They've changed their sound at plenty of points. Siamese Dream and MCIS are the only 2 albums of theirs that i think have the same sound. It was about 1989 though. For lots of reasons, one of them being he discovered Jane's Addiction, which he admitted when he hosted Rage (Australian Radio show) was a huge influence on him.
It's great to see how far they've truly progressed. Billy reminds me of a cross between Paula Poundstone and Eddie Brickell with the long hair though. LOL. He's a true musical genius!
no it is because in a doc umentry of the samhingh pumpkins the full circle one it shows you the she loive perfromace. and yeah im know ther is a live verion of she thanks tho.
Funny how people got all pissed when the hyper-80's Adore album came out, acting like the Pumpkins "changed", when it's really just their roots coming out. Personally I'll take Pumpkins in any style.
