  • what a classic! can't believe this is here, it's maaaagic!

  • Bad hair days.

  • extremely 1980's sounding. thank God they've improved since then.

  • I love their haircuts, really. They look awesome.

  • @ObscuredJellybelly i agree. im gonna grow my hair back out. that just looks great on corgan

  • You can really hear Corgans Bauhaus influence in this.

  • The Strokes' bassist stole Corgan's hair

  • Love the bass sound on this song. But I think the song on the whole would have been better if they used guitars to a bare minimum with some echo-effects and let the bass drive the song completely.

  • Gotta love the base in this song.

  • 3 people are possibly deaf.

  • It's really not a great song. But you could see they had tons of potential, especially considering the year. Thanks for the vid!

  • it sounds really rock n' roll! Awesome song!

  • my god he's fucking gorgeous with hair!!!! why did it have to to fall out dammit?! -___-

  • @blackhorse099 It didn't fall out. He shaved it.

  • @JADsGames well yeah I think he shaved it before it all fell out, but i'm pretty sure I heard that it had begun to fall out before he shaved it.

  • I wonder if Billy was listening to the Cure a lot back then?

  • @sydbarrett5 He was actually. The Pumpkins were inspired by The Cure a lot at the time.

  • he look the same

  • 80's!

  • Soon to be released on DVD in full quality from original 3/4" inch tapes!

  • pause at 4:55, you see the look on Billy's face? that Billy has been dead since 1997.

  • @tommytentiming That's just not true.

  • badass rug mullet on jimmy LOL

  • I think they were at their best in their first three albums especially Gish

  • D'arcy sounds badass on the bass!

  • priceless

  • whats kurt cobain dueing with the smashiing pumpkins??

  • is this like one of their first songs ever written?

  • Omg think about the Mellon Collie tour and how they were then and then look at this... pretty scary lol

  • this is my birth year.and that is how it should sound like if you ask me.

  • Dang, I wish i was around when mullets were the shit.

  • @Brin5252 They still are ...LOL

  • Today's youth could never sit through this type of shit

  • They rock!

  • He was pretty cute

  • Interesting to see where they came from, but I think they were better once they established their own style, which turned out to be pretty unique, cos after twenty years of bending my ear with whatever I could find, I'm sure now that the 1990's Pumpkins aint never gonna be replaced.

  • @qwerty887 I would say it's more Joy Division [became New Order once the lead singer committed suicide] meets Bauhaus [became Love and Rockets].

  • 3 people hate Jesus

  • @redneckjesus3 Are you sure to mean "Jesus", not "Buddha"...?

  • Sounds more like Siouxsie and the Banshees.

  • Billy was cool then, he's a fucker now

  • @tommytentiming I saw em in Madison in 91.... much cooler back then. I still have the caroline records cd I bought from em.

  • @420Honey awww yeah, the gish era was fire

  • @tommytentiming I couldn't agree more. He totally sucks now. I wish he'd just leave music and the public eye forever.

  • i love love love love LOVE super-early smashing pumpkins songs. sounds a lot like the cure & new order. love it.

i'm a huge fan and this song has been one of my favorites of theirs since i was 15 years old. long live SP. <3

  • That one rocks so much too! One of my fav about the oldest end of 80's SP tunes.

  • I've never heard this it sounds a lot like The Cure's- Hanging Garden mixed with One hundred years which both of those songs came out in 1985-ish.

  • james looks too funny

  • I bet that is the guitar James used for the everlasting gaze video

  • At 2:48 you start to hear the same whiny that sang Mayonnaise, Disarm, and Tonight Tonight I love that signature whine. That sound was and is so unique that when you hear it even for a second you know you're listening to The Smashing Pumpkins.

  • Great song, But I gotta say that that mic looks really uncomfortable, lol.

Be careful billy!!!! or you'll poke your eye out!!!. :0

  • lol james' hair looked hysterical

  • love this early pre-Gish stuff - so Post-Punk

  • Jimmy's mullet is out of control.

  • You can hear the genius just starting out.

  • i dunno why but it remains me type o negative

  • Can anyone give me a bit.ly link to a perfomance of SUN from 88-89 ??? Lyrics say "walking in the sun I never fear the light" or something

  • you recon that Billy Corgan was a fan of the telescopes (taste era)?

  • Shave Billy's head and he looks and sounds exactly as he does today.

  • this is grunge.

  • Sounds Like Tear Garden my god he has not changed just gone back to his roots.

  • This is fantastic. William Corgan, please re-issue Gish with early Pumpkins demos!

  • Does anyone know what "The pulse" was?

and this song is STILL awesome!

  • Oh my God...I cant believe this was 1988....

    This is magical!

  • Billy with Fender Mustang and Rosewood??? lol! and Jimmy tricks with drums sticks!! priceless...

  • @orkosh dude that and the tele-rockin Iha with 80's hair fucking slay me!

  • billy..... i'd hit it

  • OMG!!! Billy is soooo freakin HOTT in this vid

  • what was "the pulse"? and this song is awesome!!!:)

  • oh camera, why wont u film billies pedal board...

  • I think he is trying to get that old voice back on Teargarden

  • is that a mustang billys playing? fuckin kool

  • this is dope. never heard em like this b4 and I love Pumpkinz .Digging this more than The Marked stuff. Gonna check out some more.

  • This is the coolest fucking thing I've ever came across.

  • see, i could never listen to cure. but this, this is awesome!

  • Why doesn't he sing like that anymore? beautiful voice!! damn!

also, the beginning sounds so much like The Cure. I love it!

  • can anyone tell me where to find these post-punk songs from 80s era Smashing Pumpkins? are they on any officially released albums or will I just have to find bootlegs?

  • Wow. Billy was a cutie. I love this song. Pretty amazing stuff and amazing to get to see it.

  • it's hard to tell if that's a Mustang or a Duo-Sonic he's playing...

  • @zerosoma33 I'd say mustang, duo sonics didn't have the out of phase switches about the pick ups. =]

  • they all looks so 80s. lol. great stuff----especially jimmys mullet

  • He Looks Cooler With Hair

  • @InsanikRhi77 I guess he's feelin' cooler without HaiR...

  • LOL @ the hostility. That's basically a mullet he has, even Billy stated that he had a mullet hair cut when he joined the band.

  • @Lith333 yeah you're right huh

  • Bring back the jimullet Jimmy!

  • @Lith333

    thats a mop top retard

  • wheres my torrent?

  • LOL. Wow you're dumb. I'm the last person to judge someone based on their gender. She isn't a great bass player. Does she get the job done? Yes. Is she amazing? Absolutely not. Could I see the band with anybody else? No. The band was perfect as they were together, as a unit.

  • true wavers

  • i need a torrent of this tape

  • I remember seeing some of this footage during Viewphoria, but Billy was talking and the was no sound for the music... so cool to actually see AND hear what they were playing back then.

Also, I'm a huge Jimmy Chamberlin fan. It is amazing to see how far someone can come. He almost sounds like he's just learning to play the drums here... far cry from what the man can do now!

  • dude, no...Jimmy was a monster even here, it's just that he was a jazz drummer trying to get a feel for rock (typically rock music is simpler...he hadn't quite explored the possibilities with these mellow songs).

Also the pumpkins were trying their hand at the whole "new wave" thing...they soon found out that they were a "rock band"

  • jimmy was a jazz drummer ! ?

i couldnt even see him playing anything else other than rock now

  • really? His drumming is SO jazzy

  • Check out "The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex" it's sort of a solo outing. Just Jimmy and guest musicians (including Billy on a track or two.) You will hear the jazz there. Check out the song "streetcrawler" on youtube.

  • Those Fender Mustangs and Jazzmasters where so cheap in the 80's because nobody wanted them. The pawnshops were the place to go. In the 80's brightly colored guitars (hair metal) were the rage. But once Nirvana broke out, the prices went through the roof.

  • wow. pretty gd song 4 early days

  • i wanna know what kind of mic that is, it looks neato

  • great song

  • look at Jimmy.. lol still cool

  • This is a very rare video indeed. Billy is playing a Mustang. He use to use Mustangs alot actually (you can see him play them in video when he was in the Marked). He stopped playing them after grunge he said because by then it was too clique.

  • OW! OW! OW!

  • Actually, its more like "Aye! Ay! Ay!"

Get it right next time, OKAY?!

  • Or Im carving your penis off

  • new wave

  • Priceless! All of them were SO young, yet so right on with what they were doing. Impressive.

  • haha im dying this is so classic

  • Billy Corgan had claimed to be a fan of Joy Division and I never really figured out why until I heard this. This song sounds heavily influenced by Joy Division. Kudos Billy.

  • Love new wave! Gotta love Joy Division :)

  • @Etriaph Yeah, I'm hearing a bit of early U2 in there as well...

  • this is weird, I'm as old as they are in that video, d'arcy is so hot

  • my goodness!! when was billy born?

  • 1967. This must be around 1989 when the were all in there early 20s.

  • wow.. i was born at the wrong time. lol. x)

  • it says above 1988... lol

  • sounds like there's a U2/Love and Rockets thing goin on here. Also, billy has a voice here! makes u wonder y he's kept it hidden for 20 years with all the in/out nasal/throat and high/low stuff.

  • I heard this was from mashed potatoes? They're my favorite band but I'm stupid for never listening to mashed potatoes

  • Yes it is

  • Sounds like The Cure :D

  • sounds POp , is that a Cover?

  • I love the pumpkins, but I think Darcy is one of the most mediocre bassists in music. If you want good basslines listen to The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division . . . many other bands. Pumpkins was just more guitar/drum driven. Still love Darcy and the band tho.

  • You're asking how they got famous.

    <.<

Late 80's, early 90's was PRIME for Alternative rock.

They just happened to be one of the better bands to be playing. Good thing too.

  • BIlly was SO hot back then.

  • This is one of the most complex basslines i've ever heard from a pumpkins song. And Jimmy just kicks all kinds of ass in this song.

  • So Billy is 21 years old in this video...

  • sweet bassline

  • Billy reminds me of Brian Molko from Placebo in this

  • They turned into goth to psychodelic music in 1989. Billys love to goth music comes from 1985 with the marked and in 1989 he started getting more into psychdelic music.

  • Can you find any like downloads of the MArked or any EPs by them? My friend has heard them and says they are really good but I've never been able to find anything from them :(

  • At what point did they change their sound?

  • They've changed their sound at plenty of points. Siamese Dream and MCIS are the only 2 albums of theirs that i think have the same sound. It was about 1989 though. For lots of reasons, one of them being he discovered Jane's Addiction, which he admitted when he hosted Rage (Australian Radio show) was a huge influence on him.

  • jiimmy looks like a penis

  • wtf?

  • great music!! I love SP's music :)

  • D'arcy and Billy were hot in this one!!

  • tera1320 cyberpunk extrodinaire

  • A goth early pumpkins song.

    Amazing sound!

  • does anyone know where i can download all the psycho tapes?

  • this makes me so happy

    its so good

  • look to jimmy at 03:23

    pure ability!

  • Whoa...the evolution of Alternative 90's Rock is amazing!

  • ah the Pumpkin's humble beginnings... it's wonderful to see!

  • It's great to see how far they've truly progressed. Billy reminds me of a cross between Paula Poundstone and Eddie Brickell with the long hair though. LOL. He's a true musical genius!

  • I agree

  • I love they're Demo's i think it kinda shows a little bit more of who they were and they're influences.

  • i wonder if you or anyone casn find the she performance from this show???

  • there is a she performance live 88 but im not sure if its the same show.

  • no it is because in a doc umentry of the samhingh pumpkins the full circle one it shows you the she loive perfromace. and yeah im know ther is a live verion of she thanks tho.

  • this song is awesome! its not like any other pumpkins song ive ever heard!! sounds really 80s

  • Funny how people got all pissed when the hyper-80's Adore album came out, acting like the Pumpkins "changed", when it's really just their roots coming out. Personally I'll take Pumpkins in any style.

  • i like pumpkins smashed te he although its smashing but whatever

  • i agree

  • Wow!!! luv their early songs def. sound like Cure nd early U2 Damn 20 years ago too Thanks for posting this...

  • Move over Clan of Xymox! Here come the Smashing Pumpkins! lol

  • This is gold, I swear.

  • call me weird but this was my favorite pumpkins era (one of so many)

  • cette chanson c'est un pure concentré de smashing pumpkins 15O% smashing pumpkins

  • so cool.... thanks for posting this

  • Yay, I worked the bass line out.. (on bass lol) It's pretty simple :)

Billy is beautiful!!!!! He's so gorgeous in this

  • you'll generally find that most of the pumpkins bass lines (at least with d'arcy) were simple. of course on the albums it's mostly billy, even on bass. however i'm pretty sure that MCIS and adore had the most participation from james and d'arcy.

  • Seeing them like this is Crazy! ha d'arcy is camouflaged against the amps.

  • DREAM SOUND ,DREAM TIMES 80's, dream band !

  • Jimmy has some sick flow. What a mullet! The rest of the band looks funny as well. I really dig these old songs, very much like The Cure.

  • haha look at James and Darcy and Jimmy with the mullet.

  • this is the best james iha EVER sounded.

  • cool......

  • I seem to really like the early very 80s kinda Pumpkins more than the way they became later! And as always the music is great...the guitar(s),bass and drums are to die for!Very talented!

  • chamberlain looks so thin!! (comapared to nowadays anyway..) the whole band looks different!! its great music too!!

  • Wish youtube had been around in the nineties for this sort of thing. Joy Division like.

  • he's prettyful

  • Billy Looks and sounds awesome.
