Why not pick up the CM with a helicopter like they used to? It seems like a waste building all those support cranes and equipment. Keep it simple. Use what we've got. I know the CM is much much heavier than Apollo's capsule but surely we have more powerful helicopters that could do the job... Thoughts?
A ship-based crane would be very cost effective and safer to handle. The amphibious assault ship are existing technology that could be easily employed without the creating a new ship design.
No. Constellation has not been cancelled and is still in effect.
However it is essentially a zombie programme. The President has proposed it be cancelled due to it being off-track, overbudget, and underperforming, however Congress has to approve this before it comes into effect. Most in Congress realise Constellation isn't working, but don't like the President's proposal either. So the future of manned spaceflight is up in the air.
why are the astronauts carried off in a litter, rather than allowed to step out under their own power? Or is that just in case they are physically unable to step out perhaps due of strength degredation or injury? If one of them had a back injury and needed immobilization, it certainly does seem safer than the way the Apollo crew members were pulled out while still floating on the open sea!
After being in space for long duration missions, the human body gets used to the microgravity environment. The sudden shift to a 1 g environment is hard to adjust to at first, and the astronauts need to regain the strength to walk on their own.
If you see video of crew recovery from Soyuz capsules, they're brought out in a similar mannor.

In the mean time, CxP continues.
