I LOVE this version actually better than the hit version, really raw sounding And Father Bruce another great gem. !000 times better than We built this city, what went wrong there?
Love this as an alternate version. The moody rythm guitar really captures the dark beatnik, pre hippie and over the top psychedelic era that would follow.JA's version is tighter and more intense but this one has lots of atmosphere.
Sucks compared to the later incarnation. Funny how so many 50s and 60s songs were improved upon by the 2nd or 3rd take on them by other artists. Today, though, re-do a song and you'll get pounded on for tainting a classic.
I love all of The Great Societies stuff, i actually think they did somebody to love way better than JA ever did. The other klive version from there album is just about my favourite recording ever. It is so intense and seems to go on forever where as JA studio version is way too short.
noo this studio version was called someone to love, the name didn't change till after the single was made, I can't remember if JA changed the name or if TGS changed it for live performances
@marrrrrrks grace Slick wrote it for the great society and it was called someone to love. later she played and recorded it with jefferson airplane and it was called somebody to love
First, thanks for the upload. I think I know the one you're talking about, the live recording at the Matrix? It's great, especially where Grace really cranks the vocals in the latter part of the song - truly inspired talent.
All I can say is wow! What terrific vocals from that lady. The garage sound of this lends to the sombre, soulful tone really well. Both the JA version and this are great, but the tone of this one seems to fit the lyrics better - JMHO.
This version has the intensity of youth and the rawness of spirit that was living in the San Francisco region during this period in time. This time was an amazing funnel of sonic exuberance mirrored in the music and changed American culture. We are still listening/living to its resonance.
Sly Stone produced this version as one of his first productions. I read where he was so frustrated with the band in the session that he walked out of the studio.
yeah that's true, Darby slick said in his auto biography they did had a good take the first time, but the engineer messed up so it didn't apparently record, the actually number of takes was unknown, he said it might of been between 100-500 which is crazy...

I like the outro on the JA version, but this is sooo '66 San Francisco garage/psyc
