  • I like the outro on the JA version, but this is sooo '66 San Francisco garage/psyc

  • I LOVE this version actually better than the hit version, really raw sounding And Father Bruce another great gem. !000 times better than We built this city, what went wrong there?

  • @Kitandroxandbec

well I actually like the Jefferson Airplane version better than this one, but I agree with you about we built this city, terrible song!

  • Love this as an alternate version. The moody rythm guitar really captures the dark beatnik, pre hippie and over the top psychedelic era that would follow.JA's version is tighter and more intense but this one has lots of atmosphere.

  • this is the best version mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn, sway with it

  • Wow this blew me away, very intense without overstating it.

  • Sucks compared to the later incarnation. Funny how so many 50s and 60s songs were improved upon by the 2nd or 3rd take on them by other artists. Today, though, re-do a song and you'll get pounded on for tainting a classic.

  • I love all of The Great Societies stuff, i actually think they did somebody to love way better than JA ever did. The other klive version from there album is just about my favourite recording ever. It is so intense and seems to go on forever where as JA studio version is way too short.

Grace Slick is the best singer ever. period.

  • Hey can someone please point me to an interview with grace slick where she talks about the Great society? I can't find one :(

  • wow, what a difference!

  • Honestly to me all 3 versions are great, by all three i mean Jim Carrey's, Jefferson Airplane's, and The Great Society's in that order lol.

  • Ah okay :)

  • Somebody to love, not someone, isn't it?

  • @milojohn94

noo this studio version was called someone to love, the name didn't change till after the single was made, I can't remember if JA changed the name or if TGS changed it for live performances

  • @marrrrrrks grace Slick wrote it for the great society and it was called someone to love. later she played and recorded it with jefferson airplane and it was called somebody to love

  • @Kurtly1967

No Darby Slick wrote it, but I think you're right about the name.

  • @marrrrrrks ok :)

  • LIKE "WOW" MAN!!!!!!! COOL TUNE!!!!!!!

  • Excellent!

  • Don't kill me, but I like this better than the JA version.I LOVE both though. That guitar solo sounds like a lawn mower!!!!

  • First, thanks for the upload. I think I know the one you're talking about, the live recording at the Matrix? It's great, especially where Grace really cranks the vocals in the latter part of the song - truly inspired talent.

  • All I can say is wow! What terrific vocals from that lady. The garage sound of this lends to the sombre, soulful tone really well. Both the JA version and this are great, but the tone of this one seems to fit the lyrics better - JMHO.

  • @videomaniac108

not sure if you've heard it but, the live version by TGS is much better

  • interesting first version of an all-time favourite! thx for sharing!

  • This version has the intensity of youth and the rawness of spirit that was living in the San Francisco region during this period in time. This time was an amazing funnel of sonic exuberance mirrored in the music and changed American culture. We are still listening/living to its resonance.

    Robert Schoenberg

  • Wow,thanks for posting this,,amazing sound for such an old recording..PEACE

  • Jefferson Airplanes verison is better.

  • @duracell777 man, this is the first version of the song you know!

  • Sly Stone produced this version as one of his first productions. I read where he was so frustrated with the band in the session that he walked out of the studio.

  • @POSI2

yeah that's true, Darby slick said in his auto biography they did had a good take the first time, but the engineer messed up so it didn't apparently record, the actually number of takes was unknown, he said it might of been between 100-500 which is crazy...

  • Never heard this one before....Wonderful post, Grace was so Avant Garde..Great artist and individual!!!!!....:-)

  • oh.....just read the info. This is gold- I would have never heard this without your excellent addition to you tube!

  • so was this before jefferson airplane?

  • yes

  • Yes, yet Grace Slick was in both bands...

  • @FrantikFilms didn't know that. Thanks for the info
