The sheer otherworldy exection of hellishly speeding tempo and time is mind-blowing! Thank you, aimson for generously posting this! This helps immensely on the opera libretto I am currently engaged in, on Paganini's life!
Good job buddy, I'm glad you're on the "I have a single fav violinist" bandwagon like too many others. Listen to the playing, stop bitching about how so-and-so is better and whoever. Accardo's is amazing, just as Kavakos is.
If only you knew that when Accardo recorded the concerto he was ill you won't say this. Moreover Accardo is abble to play the 5 concertos. My father studied with him and he told me that the morning when he was in course before begining he always ask my father to buy him a coffee and during the time he get it, he played a paganini caprice, just after wake up.
Really enjoyed this..appreciate your sharing. I like Mr. Accardo's Paganini' interpretations--it's not just the technique--it seems to be the intuition as well.
Accardo is one of the best Paganini violinists, but did anyone hear the Francescatti and Kogan rendition? Its worth listening to it, especially the Francescatti.
I agree Sinfoniette: I totally enjoy both Kogan and Francescatti though they are different in their approaches; both totally enjoyable. Francescatti's playing of the Paganini Caprices utterly gorgeous and played for the listening pleasure of the audience rather than to dazzle them with break neck speed.
Some violinist in the orchestra lead-in sure gave it his all! Talk about giving it 110%...
Accardo isn't bad either, in fact he's marvellous! He takes his time, makes it lovely, precise, gorgeous, like the lush feathers from an angel's wings...
This cadenza is based on Carl Flesch and Emil Sauret You have to also hear the execution of the E minor concert (no6). The cadenza over there is amazing , composed from Accardo.
This interpretation is amazing. It's always nice to hear different rendition of this concert by another master. That being said, anyone interested in hearing another amazing interpretation should seek out Gil Shaham's.

Actually, I am quite unimpressed by his playing. His 1977 DG recording of the Capricci are perhaps the sloppiest recording I have ever heard, coming second behind Ricci, whom I'm also not very fond of.
No one in the world can play Paganini with that virtuosism shown by maestro Accardo, that's universally recognized by worldwide experts. He's so highly regarded because he's simply a monster.
I actually think that this cadenza doesn't show Accardo at his fiery best, because he's mostly following the usual Sauret cadenza here, whereas in the other 5 concerti, he came up a lot of his own stuff, which is even more technically impressive.
I like this cadenza the best and have heard a dozen different recordings of it - maybe that's why I'm so impressed. I am not as familiar with the other concerti but I will say that his cadenzas are just generally amazing. I was originally thinking of doing a montage of all 6 cadenzas to compare in one recording - a good idea you think?
Oh, I'm sure. But I didn't post this because of technical quality. I'm a musician not a technician. I posted this because Accardo plays this cadenza as if he is on fire. He is a true virtuoso and I wanted to share. By the way, where did you find Kogan's cadenza? I want to hear!
Its great you put that up!Well,i am his student.i have all the recordings of him.I will put in some days also the concerto for four violins from vivaldi with him(and me 4th violin).i think is the best interpretation ever.
Marvellous. This is played with one of his 2 stradivari I believe. I would be interested in seing Maestro Accardo play this with the "Guarneri del Gesù", the violin Paganini used to play and nicknamed "violino cannone", now kept in Genova.
He plays this equilibristic cadenza with such an ease ... I have this CD set. Unfortunately only the first concerto and the third movement from the second one are bearable. The rest is just a musical crap full of ascending and descending violin passages stuffed with some routine orchestra scores behind, without any invention. No wonder that almost no one plays these pieces.
Wow, really? I have been listening to the set for the past 2 weeks over and over again. I absolutely love all of #5, 1st of #1, and 3rd of #3 (la campanella). I agree that they get tiresome, especially if you listen to all 6 front to back in one sitting. But the invention is in the technique and it is all over the place in every concerto.
i bought Accardo's recording of the 6 soon after it came out. liked it, still do, big Paganini fan, but Accardo's not my fav. check out Massimo Quarta's website (via google). you can listen to his entire recordings online, incl all 6 Paganini. he's the best. there's also a picture of him and Accardo trying out a violin.
I went to the Massimo Quarta website. I listened to "Variazioni su un tema di Weigl" from his Paganini CD. It was incredibly out of tune ... (second portion of the first part).
Although I prefer Paganini's 2nd concerto over the others, I'd have to say this is one of the best-suited cadenza's I've heard for this concerto. Mr. Accardo has a very warm tone. (p.s. I think your title is quite fitting: Holy Crap!)
It is marvelous, very silky and thanks for posting it; reminds me a version by Sarah Chang 1995 was taken off recently, leaving an huge gap, for awhile. Very different Cadenzas.
Maybe you people should listen to Hirsshorn...

Another worth listening to is Viktor Tretyakov with the Moscow Philharmonic under Neeme Yarvi - spectacular!
I would like to hear your thoughts.
Rabin, Accardo & Tretyakov have to be in your montage...have you done this yet?
What others were you thinking of posting?

TheViolinBill 2 years ago
That's your opinion. My opinion is the exact opposite. Anyways, the notes missed are probably because of different sheet music.

Especialy about Paganin, all them are below the genius Vasco Abadjiev. Only Franceskati is near to his class.
