I am just wondering if Celia Cruz ever knew how to speak English well. I did see some of her TV performance a long time ago and she spoke a little bit, but she also said her "English is not good looking", I can tell her she was saying she did not speak it well.
Que DOS NEGRAS MARAVILLOSAS ... DIOS MIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Y lo mas triste del caso es que no hay RELEVO. ... PATTi, aguantate duro y metele mano a la Ocha, que el dia que nos abandones, seguiremos en tinieblas!
patti is a legend in her own right but in this case she needed to let it alone and let celia do her thing! some parts were absolutely cringe worthy because she was trying too hard! and AZUCAR! should be reserved for celia too. stick to R.E.S.P.E.C.T. you work that just fiiine.
This is NOT just about hitting high notes and being loud, when you sing in Afro-Caribbean music you need to IMPROVISE lines, rhyme and maintain the timing not just screaming at the top of your lungs. And the change in arrangement @2:49 JUST TOTALLY SUCKS. That song is supposed to be a GUAGUANCO all the way through. Definitely NOT how a band would perform for a REAL LATIN MAMBO crowd. They had to accomodate LaBelle for that part. SMH.
Pattie like has to hit those loud notes she likes to hit or else she isn't being Pattie, lol...but she still managed to honor Celia Cruz...and the music change up allowed people to see that Celia Cruz can sing with any arrangement......and we all know no one is going to be able to sing this song like Celia Cruz, lol.
Celia didn't exactly come on like a whisper on a breeze...That's what I loved about her voice...she always sounded like she was telling you about life...Celia-style...straight forward, with no trips around the block. I confess, I don't speak Spanish, but just from her stance and delivery I know she was a kindred spirit to many and the love and respect she recieved from people all over the world is a testament it.
@batucada358 To cecillbill also...Music, whether you understand the lyrics or not, transcends all politically correct BS...I have been a fan of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 since forever and I don't speak Portugese...and if you go to a YouTube site called "Beautiful Russia" you will be privileged to hear one of the most beautiful songs, IMO, that you'll ever hear...sung in Russian...Choose to enjoy or not enjoy the music, but at least respect the artist even if they're not your cup of tea.
Snap out of it and save the speech for the tons of folks with no talent who think singing loud compensates for a lack of talent...Patti can scream bloody murder and have folks lining up to buy it, she's just that damn good. You sound extra pissed and whiny over nothing. Celia was magnificent, and Patti worked with what she had and was just as good...both probably drank whiskey sours after the show, and slept like babies that night...sounds like you haven't slept since that show!
@batucada358 On the contrary, if you must know, I've slept well and sleep well every night. I just thought PATTI was lousy in this event and posted it, and that's all. So why does that seem to be a problem for some people? What just because she's Patti Labelle or because some people are fans of Patti she does everything good? Please! She's good doing R&B but lousy when it comes to this genre.
The woman doesn't speak Spanish, genius, what do you expect...I reiterate, Patti did her best under the circumstances...Celia was excellent at what she did, but could she do what Patti does?...No, but if asked to come on stage with Patti, I'm sure she would have worked her own brand of magic, and it would have been good enough. The two women respected each other, and shame wuddn't on the program. Get some sominex hon, and try again...or at least take a nap and a couple of Prozac.
Seriously people, we will never be able to move forward about race as a country or world if we keeping bringing up non-sense like this. Enjoy the video & let's change the subject....So wasn't Patti working that dress? LOL

How beautiful that both being blk ladies that speak totally different languages can come together and sing for the world. I believe this country was found by immigrant from all parts of the world and if you chose to live here respect learn the language and take pride on this country as well as you d
I Love that you have the Queen Of Salsa and the true Queen of Soul and can have them sing a Salsa song and add some soul to it and it sounds like pure perfection! This is such a wonderful duet, dare I call it the best duet ?
I Love that you have the Queen Of Slasa and the true Queen of Soul and can have them sing a Salsa song and add some soul to it and it sounds like pure perfection! This is such a wonderful duet, dare I call it the best duet ?
That's amazing!! I have always thought Celia and Patti favored each other. I'm African American but I have Hispanic aunts so I know some Celia songs and I know who she is. I've read some of the comments and they are comparing the two. You can't compare them. They are both HIGHLY respected singers in their respectable genres of music. Seeing the two of them together was beautiful. Thanks for posting this.
I once had a Dominican woman tell me she had NO African ancestry, when she looked fresh off the boat lol. Black is beautiful and I have no idea why people feel the need to abandon their heritage. Now, my father is STRAIGHT from Africa, and this girl was about 5 shades darker than me with hair much kinkier. All I could do was shake my head and pray that, that young lady would one day embrace all of her cultures and history in a positive light. Sad!
Come on, u do understand that yes, she is Cuban, which means that she has African ancestors and she always acknowledged her African ancestry. Those are African rhythms u hear. Where do you think her sound originated from. The whole point of the performance with Pattie is to show the connection, the links, the culture and how 2 women from different parts of the world not only look soooo much alike, but they are joined by culture, history, music, and so much more. And they respected each other.
@vmm027 She was Afro Cuban (claimed it and proud of it), hence someone calling her an African goddess. That's like me saying I'm not of African heritage, because I was born in America and speak English. Black Latinos are like Black Americans, our boats from Africa just went separate ways lol.
@vmm027 I don't dispute that. But, we share a heritage. Americans of Irish descent say...from New England don't dispute their ancestry with actual Irish people from Ireland. I don't dispute my ancestry to Africans from Africa because I was born in another country. We share the same ethnicity but come from different countries (nationalities) hence we have different cultures (African diaspora). You look black because you are black. We just have different cultures.
la rumba me esta llamandoo bongó dile que ya voy !! (8) q rica salsa sin palabras ... Rumba buena y guagancoó! larga vida a la reyna de la salsa !! Celia cruz!!
What an important moment in black history. Two African Queens of two different tongues (English and Spanish) coming together in one voice. La Reina de Salsa Celia Cruz y Lady Marmalade herself Patti Labelle. Azucar Negras ! Las senoras negras del alma (The black ladies of soul).
You have to understand the power of Celia Cruz. She was/is the Diana Ross/Aretha Franklin of Salsa itself. Nobody ever came to close to Diva status than Celia. This is an epic moment: two powerful singers together. Even Patti is getting into it. I highly doubt we will ever see a strong force like Celia Cruz ever again. When she was on stage, shows over. This is what talent and skills is all about, people. Mark my word. Forget American Idol or Adam Lambert. This is true raw talent at its best.
There are no words for this performence, its awesome! Two huge divas, two different worlds, two different laguages, and two different styles! Azucar Celia!
omg, this brings me chills and tears of proudness este video!!!! Being Morena and Cubana myself and loving them both as the iconic entertainers that the are, this is awesome...so happy I stumbled across it!! que el Dios nos bendiga todos.
How do compare greatness? You don't .....you just enjoy them for uniqueness and talent they bring to the arts. God Bless Celia and I hope she's doing very well on the other side. God Bless Patti and when it's her turn to cross over...may they both hug, laugh and put on the best show ever!!!
OMG!!!! I remember watching this live in 1998 (well live through the television broadcast). I thought this was an AMAZING performance! I even had it on my VCR tape, lol. Love it...so great to see it again on Youtube.
WOW! Two African Queens coming together like this. Man, this is a classic. And check out the young Sheila E, in the back playing the congos, she knew she was in the midst of greatness, and loving it.
So beautiful to see these 2 together. I always thought they resembled each other like sisters or cousins or something. I really miss Celia.. She was truly beautiful inside and out!
I love the look that Celia gives Patti at 2:01 "I know you ain't dragging my damn coat across the floor" and then at 3:46, Celia's like "I better step back, she's getting ready to blow"
Two African Queens coming together. This is amazing. We have soul no matter where we are on the planet. They even look alike. Celia honored her African roots unlike many in Latin America. Honor your African roots. God has put the entire Universe in us.
Two African Queens coming together. This is amazing. We have soul no matter where we are on this planet. They even look just alike. Celia loved her African Blood unlike many in Latin America. Honor your African Blood. God has put the entire Universe in us.
@braven001 You said it! "Black is the color of our solar system. Out of darkness was born the light. Black is the color of the whole Universe . . . did not your morning start with darkness . . . well, so does your night."
@PAULINARUBIOus Education has been wasted on you. Cuban isn't a race, it's a nationality. It's a shame people don't realize all the slave boats from Africa didn't just go to America. Patti and Celia look like sisters, and you're going to actually say she's not of African heritage simply because she's of a Cuban nationality and speaks Spanish. Then I'm not either, because I was born in America and natively speak English.
@braven001 Muchas Gracias, Soy Dominicano pero mis raíces son Africano y ESTOY ORGULLOSA DE SER QUIEN SOY... La Republica Dominicana Te ama Celia!!! R.I.P.
@braven001 Have you know that MANY IN LATIN AMERICA have MAINTAINED the TRADITION of the DRUM. AND when Dizzy Gillespie and other African-American Jazz musicians wanted to make their music more "AFRICAN" and give it more Rhythm the had to get it from the many of us in Latin America! U know the ones who you make a sweeping generalization about us not honoring our African heritage/lineage. Go look it up in any documentary. Jazz had a PLAIN drum beat and was nothing special DIZZY said that.
Why must people try to minimize everything by reducing them to competitions? These women are both talented in their own right. Obviously they have mutual respect.....try it!!!
You got that right lol, especially from 3:07 on. She went from straight salsa to soul honey, changed right with the music--that's a TRUE artist. She doesn't even speak english that well but it's clear she knows what soul sounds like. She is soul.
These two are like Soul sisters. GREAT VOICES & GREAT PERFORMERS. They both have a love of humor and they truly love their fans. That is why they give so much on stage, as well as off.
Very nice to see this. I personally saw Celia at the Flagler Dog track and Dinner Key Auditorium, Calle Ocho etc. in Miami The thing is, it's just hard for anyone to share the stage with her. Her voice, her charisma . She simply blows everyone away.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
TE QUIERO MUCHO CELIA!!!!!!
Celia is and always willm be The Damn Queen of Salsa!!!!!!
No one and I mean no one will ever take her spot. She is so sweet and talented!!!! Patti Labelle is a Powerful Singer, but ay she only freaking yells at the top of her lungs just like Beyonce. Just sing the song with Passion like La Celia and stop trying to over-do it. Laballe look like she having a damn seizure trying to Salsa Dance jajajajaja!!!! Rest in Peace Celia!!!
Two Great Woman showing how to love each other and what they do, it shows that You don't have to compete or have a dislike for someone that there is room for us all in music, The Queen Of SALSA & The Diva of SOUl ----ELECTRIFYING--AZUCAR!
she made a mockery of the song.. omg she butchered it.. i cant even stand it.. does patti know how to perform a song without screaming.. and she looked like she was having a seizure.. how embarassing i couldnt even finish watching it
I cannot believe this!!!! I can safely say that I am glad to be of that long ago era...I feel so sorry for the young ones today..simply beautiful...Good job on this one.
Guys please! They have two different voices. Celia has a deep contralto and Patti is Wagnerian soprano one of the highest dramatic sopranos. I love them both. They are both Queens. They both possess a rare power in their voice that could never and will never be duplicated. They are both modest women and Patti was just excited to be there. Seeing these two forces collide was so Greek to me because you'd never believe these two powerhouses would ever encounter each other.
dick your fucken stupid fuck i swear go to hell dumb shit god people like you shoulnt be on the net some people are just to aggresive celia was way more legendary tha patti you dont know that though met multiple presidents here in the us and all over the world white house trips huge funeral trplre pattis fans she was just to international even in japan she was famous but dont feel bad theres alot of dumbshits out there though not much of them go dissing 73 years olds who died of a tumor idiot

@braven001 You said it! "Black is the color of our solar system. Out of darkness was born the light. Black is the color of the whole Universe . . . did not your morning start with darkness . . . well, so does your night."
TrickyWoo315 1 year ago
@braven001 celia was latin! not african she was from CUBA duh!
PAULINARUBIOus 1 year ago

@braven001 patti labelle is mixed race so why not honour all the races in her not just the african

Obviously they have mutual respect.....try it!!!

patti is hella funny, but no way is she or her voice more soulful than celia... just listen... celia is straight soul!!!
og2783 2 years ago
You got that right lol, especially from 3:07 on. She went from straight salsa to soul honey, changed right with the music--that's a TRUE artist. She doesn't even speak english that well but it's clear she knows what soul sounds like. She is soul.

I love Celia but shes not more soulful than patti

These two are like Soul sisters. GREAT VOICES & GREAT PERFORMERS. They both have a love of humor and they truly love their fans. That is why they give so much on stage, as well as off.

Very nice to see this. I personally saw Celia at the Flagler Dog track and Dinner Key Auditorium, Calle Ocho etc. in Miami The thing is, it's just hard for anyone to share the stage with her. Her voice, her charisma . She simply blows everyone away.

"One of the very first Ladies of Song, Ms. Celia Cruz." - Patti LaBelle
Nice to hear such kind words from one Legend to Another. The ladies are on FIRE!
And Sheila E. just ROCKED the best out of the great band!
The stage could've just burned to ashes.
