If he was any kind of hockey player he would have gone for the puck so that he can keep it in the zone for his team. I am neither a Pens, nor a Caps fan, but I can't see why it was AO's fault for Gonchar trying to bail out of getting hit. This is 100% Gonchar's fault, he tries to bail on the hit. Ovie never moves anything, he lined Gonchar up and was finishing his check.

Yes I know. When I look at it I don't believe Gonchar gets out of the way enough to make it a knee to knee hit. I mean really, knee to knee hits just aren't accidental, it's just one of those things. Ovechkin wouldn't make a mistake like that, he wasn't lined up head on to Gonchar in the first place. He wanted to make this hit, in my opinion. Watching his post game interview, it really didn't seem like he cared that he could have possibly ended Gonchar's career either.

It sucks to see something like this happen to such a great defenseman in Gonchar, but i can't really comment on whether the hit was dirty or not....however, i will say this: Even if Pittsburgh wins game 7, if they don't have Gonchar for the Eastern Conference Finals, I don't like their chances against Boston or Carolina as both teams would give them a lot of trouble and Fleury isn't playing this series the way he did against Philadelphia.
this is not a cheap shot! Ovechkin did not stick out his leg, he keeps his leg square under his shoulder. Ovechkin was leading with his shoulder and Gonchar saw the hit comeing and tried to get out of the way. In the process of getting out of the way, Gonchar left his leg out. The result of that hit is gonchars fault, not OV's

There we're more penalties against the Pen's then i've ever seen that weren't called, or even acknowledged, so much that even the announcers we're confused as to why they weren't called.

I don't know if anyone noticed but Ovegetable doesn't try to play the puck. He goes straight for the hit and holds his stick out to touch the puck. If he was any kind of hockey player he would have gone for the puck so that he can keep it in the zone for his team. Reminds me of The Mighty Ducks where the player says, "Two minutes, well worth it."

I am neither a Pens, nor a Caps fan, but I can't see why it was AO's fault for Gonchar trying to bail out of getting hit. This is 100% Gonchar's fault, he tries to bail on the hit. Ovie never moves anything, he lined Gonchar up and was finishing his check.
I also love the typical bias CBC commentary. A jump? There was no jump, Millen retracts it, but with the addition of "he just stuck his knee out" Ahhh, no he did not. Cole and Millen are a fucking joke.

AO got juked and he threw his knee out. If you can take the puck and avoid a check potentially creating opportunity to move up the ice with an odd man rush you take it. You don't anticipate having someone clip your knees. That was a cheap, cheap, cheap hit.

Ovie had his foot planted and was lining Gonchar up for the hit where he expected him to be (where the puck was, in the corner). At no point did he "throw his knee out."
When Gonchar saw Ovie it was already to late, but he still tried to avoid the check (I doubt he was thinking about an odd man rush) and in doing so, put himself in a knee on knee situation.
How often does a player lead with their shoulder on an attempted knee on knee?

i'm not sayin OV is a dirty player. He plays hard and with a lot of passion. But previously the league has been very strict with knee to knee checks, and regardless of his intentions he came around the corner lining up gonch and he had a wide stance with his right leg out in case his missed the body check (which he always does when he runs people in open ice) he didn't do it intentionally but that doesn't matter, you have to be in control of your body and clearly OV came in recklessly.

right, but the league didn't even review the play. How many times can ovechkin do this until the league takes action? He leaves his feet 90% of the time and gets his hands high. All the refs needs to do is call a penalty and i'm sure OV would get the point, hey i can't do that.

people like to say that crosby gets a lot of calls because of who he is, but he earns those calls because he skates harder than anybody on the ice. It's simple fact that if you constantly move your feet you're going to draw penalties
OV draws a fair amount of penalties too, but doesn't get called because he has yellow laces and a tinted visor (and a wicked wrist shot). I too am a little biased, but that's what i've noticed this series.

well by rule it says if any play instigates a fight in the last 5 minutes of a gmes, there suspended for the next, i dont agree with that rule, but geno should have been suspended, but there is no rule that says if a player tries 2 throw a shoulder check and the other player turns out of the way and results in a knee on knee colition its a suspension, there was nothing about that hit that was intended to b dirty, gonchare just happened to turn at a terrible time

Yes I know. When I look at it I don't believe Gonchar gets out of the way enough to make it a knee to knee hit. I mean really, knee to knee hits just aren't accidental, it's just one of those things. Ovechkin wouldn't make a mistake like that, he wasn't lined up head on to Gonchar in the first place. He wanted to make this hit, in my opinion. Watching his post game interview, it really didn't seem like he cared that he could have possibly ended Gonchar's career either.

It sucks to see something like this happen to such a great defenseman in Gonchar, but i can't really comment on whether the hit was dirty or not....however, i will say this: Even if Pittsburgh wins game 7, if they don't have Gonchar for the Eastern Conference Finals, I don't like their chances against Boston or Carolina as both teams would give them a lot of trouble and Fleury isn't playing this series the way he did against Philadelphia.

this is not a cheap shot! Ovechkin did not stick out his leg, he keeps his leg square under his shoulder. Ovechkin was leading with his shoulder and Gonchar saw the hit comeing and tried to get out of the way. In the process of getting out of the way, Gonchar left his leg out. The result of that hit is gonchars fault, not OV's

Not dirty at all. OV had his shoulder down to check Gonchar and as Gonchar turned to avoid the check, they knocked knees. End of story. You Pens fans are a bunch of freakin cry babies...just like Crosby.

I guess the Pens suck, even though this is their second straight year in the semi's soon to be the conference finals... Sid's a great scorer... and is tougher than Ovi. Ovi just takes runs at people and leaves his feet on cheapshots. When sid hits, it's clean.

If you put out your stick and trip someone, you get a penalty, even if it was unintentional. Ovechkin was in control of the hit with his knee the entire time and he was not penalized for it appropriately.
"It wasn't my intention to kill him, your honor." But face the facts, the man is dead. Gonchar out for 6 weeks. We're lucky he can barely walk.
But it doesn't matter. The best suspension the Pens can give Ovechkin is the one that lasts all summer. That sentence to be delivered this evening.

Common trends in the "ovie h8er" comments:
1) quick and severe condemnation of the perceived "kneeing.
examples like: "FLAGRANT" "OBVIOUS", "DIRTY"
2) no interest at all in debating what everyone else outside of pittsburgh believes is a BORDERLINE call. This incident is probably "a coicidental" knee-to-knee contact. why wasn't he suspeneded: look at the other "kneeing" incidents through history. much different
3) if you disagree with them, you "never played hockey"

I am a die hard Pen's fan, and in my honest opinion i don't think that Ovechkin kneed Gonchar on purpose. However, that goon has been going around cross checking people and pot shotting guys when the officials aren't looking. Game 5 was a joke! There we're more penalties against the Pen's then i've ever seen that weren't called, or even acknowledged, so much that even the announcers we're confused as to why they weren't called.

should have been atleast fined if not suspended. although i beleive ocheckin in saying that it was in accident, knee on knee is just bad though, and doesn't help #8s rep, people that take runs tend to have a short career.

He did not go for the puck and sheild Gongy with his body when he clearly was in a better position to do that then bail out and make his knee to knee hit look like an accident? He's has excellent skating skills, this could have been avoided. Stop it at 1:14 for proof. Gongy is going away from the hit. He does not have a reputation for being a hitter so OV knows he didn't have to look for a collision.
