  • You are one of MY top 5 teachers . Even though I have played for years , I can always pull things from your lessons. Even a basic one like this.

    Thanks

  • wow makes soo much more sense. to some people this comes easier i guess. but no one ever explained to me this well. Im gonna go write down the notes for all the scales and modes i play and study the patterns.

4 credit guitar course in college, what a waste if im learning more here.

  • thanx!

  • i just cant seem to get my fingers moving that way especially my pinky i have a passion for music especially blues and wanna tackle this guitar thing but my fingers arent cooperating any suggestions thanks guys

  • @chillin3651 im having the same problem. just practice practice practice, sounds dumb i know but it gets easier. im in a wheeldhair.....if i can play it you can too. :) just remember why you wanna play and it'll start to be fun. dont give up!!!

  • @chillin3651 it is hard and frustrating but it gets easier with practice. just keep thinking about why you want to play, who inspired you. eventually youll figure it out. you dont HAVE to use your pinky. i dont. im in a wheelchair. if i can do it so can you : ) just dont give up on it.

  • where is the written lesson?

  • Ahah! ... "Great for fingering the scales"... Almost missed that one.

  • definitely just clicked on the video to hear the tone of that sweet strat. already know the stuff he's teaching, but that guitar is sweeet....

  • Man I just want to thank you and Marty both for what you guys are doing. The fact that you can get these kinds of lessons for FREE is amazing. You are both great guys and have helped me out TREMENDOUSLY. Thank you!

And to all the idiots complaining..shut the heck up. If you want to complain, go buy dvd's that don't cover half of what these guys cover for free and stop watching their videos.

  • you guys need to happy that there are still a few good people in the world and this guy is one of them. No matter how good your comebacks are, you're still a loser

  • he is the man !!

  • I like fingering and doing licks, C WHAT I DID THERE?

  • marty and dave are awesome, both their ways, i would have to pay 70 bugs a month to get lessons i see here for free, try learning without them...then youll see how great they are

  • @mightyzorro

Sorry, the minor pentatonic is actually 1,3b,4,5,7.

  • @mightyzorro

The notes in the minor pentatonic scale is 1,flat3,4,6,flat7. Your theory would work in the major scale, Witch is 1234567root.

  • at the 8:14 mark, he. calls the note the "flat 5".. why is it called the falt 5? ,, ive never understood this concept.. its the 4th note in the sequence of notes... so wouldnt that make it the flat 4th? .. in his explanation, the 8:40 mark, he refers to the second note as the flat 3rd, when its the second note the sequence..

  • @mightyzorro It means its the 5th note in the key, which is the first note.

  • Awesome

  • Awesome. I've learnt so much.

It's great to see such talented people sharing their knowledge and skills.

    Thanks very much.

  • Please ....I don't get what the flat 3rd is, why is it the c note???

  • @Stehallam1 The minor scale has the following sequence TSTTSTT where 'T' is a tone and 'S' is a semi-tone. So starting on A the next note is a tone away so B (since A# is only a semi tone away from A so another semi-tone gives you B) The next note is a semitone away so from B a semitone would be 'C' since there's no flat or sharp between B and C. I suppose they call it a flat third because the 3rd note of the scale is just a flat or semitone away from the 2nd note. Hope this helps.

  • @kingshearer2 Yes it has helped a lot ..... Many Thanks man!!

  • cool headstock

  • is it necessary to learn all the patterns for scales??

  • @codemastersnake it's super necessary......

  • what are the best picks that you can use?

  • @Me6adeth01 NONE! No such thing as "best picks". Best pick is the same as "best guitar". Its whatever feels right to you and what you are playing

  • @Me6adeth01 um... if you're the lead guitar player, you should use a soft pick, and for rythm, hard pick

  • Thank you for mentioning the diff between the Minor pentatonic and the blue thing. You explained is so well that i will never be confused again. I hop your DVD is as clear as this utube clip. If it is, i confident ypu will take me through this guitar confusion.

Please , use this clip as a blue print for teaching the millions of confused guitar begginers out here.

Thanks and G give bless you for making guitar learning a little bit less painfull

    R

  • Very tnxs man because this lesson i can do now very fasts solos and write solos and riffs with a good harmony

  • I've been wanking this lovely scale for as long as I can remember, but I gots a question: let's say your root note is on the 5th fret on the E string right... am I the only one that plays the second note on the3rd fret of the next string instead of the 8th fret on the E string?

  • You talk to much between your points

  • Marty also teaches you how to play guitar ... and David also teaches you how to play songs ... (as does Justin Sandercoe)!!!

  • Dude youve helped me so much within a day. I felt so lost, and I felt really down. These lessons you do really inspired me.

  • First, Cb is B but think of the scale like this. From A to B is one full step (or 2 1/2 steps to equal one full step) and the distance from B to C# is one full step. If you lower that second step by 1/2 it becomes C Hope that helps youtoobguru

  • The second note is supposed to be a flat 3rd Cb no? Why is the C note being played? Can you please explain? Thanks!

  • You are a great teacher Justin! Keep it up buddy! You really know how to teach to simplify everything for beginners! Great job!

  • Dude! you are the BEST thanks for all your videos the have helpep me a LOT!! =D

  • I have a question, why is in the basic scale starts in key of A instead of C?

  • @vumpirekizz Becuase he wanted to show you a scale starting in A... O.o lol

If you want to play a C minor pent.. just start your scale on a C and use the same intervals/ shapes as before... i believe..

  • @prayerofthemantis I see thanks for your explanation. ^^

  • you and marty should do some videos together about playing w/2 guitars, alternating rythym and lead, etc.

  • David, I think you're the best and most personable instructor among all of the videos I've watched after picking up my guitar again. Thank you.

My question is.... why are most minor scales termed "minor" when the root note is major?

  • Best fuckin teacher ever!!!

  • THIS GUY IS A GREAT TECHER IM A BEGINNER AND I GOT CONFUSED A LITLE BUT I UNDERSTAND IT BETTER NOW

  • this is a great vdo tx

  • great teacher!!!

  • appreciate this.. alot of tutors just teach and want you to learn, and dont understand that in order to comprehend what your playing you actually have to have some theory behind the music.. thanks for clearing alot of things up

  • but doesnt the minor pentatonic have 5 diffrent shapes??

  • great lesson learned alot

  • this guy is a good teacher. not like the people how don't talk and just play with a bad camera angle so you can see what thier doing. they piss me off. TALK DAMMIT!

  • Brilliant, loads learned thanx, jst need more practice on this

  • I`m sorry, just did not help me one bit.

  • how can you morons complain.. this guy is awesome.. dont get me wrong marty is cool.. but marty teaches you how to play songs.. dave teaches you how to play guitar!. thats why hes awesome and you should be thankful he takes long to explain things in such detail... Good job bro you have helped alot of people.. ignore the idiots!

  • @PURE20 yes. what is it he says? something along the lines of "dont learn licks, learn FROM the licks"

  • @PURE20

Marty also teaches you how to play guitar ... and David also teaches you how to play songs ... (as does Justin Sandercoe)!!!

  • I finally understand pentatonic scales! Thanks so much!

    5/5*

  • Less talk, more rock! It takes this guy forever to demonstrate anything. He does not begin to demonstrate scales until 3:24.

  • and it's really so difficult to skip those 3 minutes and 24 seconds?

  • @guitarslim56 because he is explaining the scale.. its better to understand the scales completely ie, the notes used, why they are used, how they got there, as apposed to just a shape. once you know the hows and whys, it makes creating your own stuff and improvising a whole lot easier. guitar is not just about shapes. idk how far along you are, but even advanced players can gain stuff from his videos

  • this guy is my favorite of all the online teachers. such patience and care!

  • Hello, I notice you have 4 DVDs for beginners but I would like to know because you inspired me and I decided to buy a guitar now but I do not know where to start. I mean what video should I start with. Thanks a lot you are a great tecaher by the way.

  • thank u man has helped alot, im just curious what are the strum patterns with scales its always confused me say for instance u play 5,6,7,8 on the top string is the strum pattern (up,down,up,down) or just downward strumming? sry if its confusin or noobish but can any1 help me?

  • you can use alternate picking or chicken picking... i think david has videos about it

  • Great lesson again. This may sound a bit newb, but if someone reads this and could answer a question I have, it would be greatly appreciated.

Are the 5 box patterns he talks about the same idea as the different modes?

And say for example I'm doing a 1-4-5 blues progression in they key of A. How do I know which blues box pattern to use for licks?

  • @Kawnification not sure of anyone has answered this yet or if youve figured it out, but no they are not like the modes. all the shapes are the same notes, just in different places. the shapes are simply to help you remember where they are. the modes are the same shapes but different scales, while what he's teaching are the same notes, but different shapes. also, if youre playing a 145 in A, you would play any shape of your a minor pentatonic. Good Luck!

  • very good and thank you :) how ever, i wish you wud just play it rather than having to go into loads of detail on one note. apart from that its best lesson iv ever had on scales

  • Thank you so much. I've been attacking this for a week now and already I can sort of solo. Thank you.

  • Great lesson. Thanks. I have a probem stretching my fingers, any suggestions?

  • hmm what helped me since i have small stubby fingers/hands. Stretched my fingers every day for few minutes. take one hand put it inbetween 2 fingers and push down, till u can feel it stretching. do it to all fingers/hands. Should take around..2 good weeks till you start feeling the stretch. but keep doing guitar finger workouts as well..

    Hope this helps.

  • I will to that my friend. Thank you very much.

  • It took my little 6 year old brother less than10 minutes to understand it

  • Very fine and useful thanks :)

    Love your stratocaster btw :D

  • i can play scales well, but im not to ...good when it comes to knowing what they are. A,C,D,E,G in that order what makes them minor pentatonic..?

  • nicee guitar

  • Thank you so much for these videos. Think instead of focusing on learning songs to start off guitar I'll nail at first these pentatonic scales to feel more comfortable around the neck, and nail these chords so i can combine both and ultimately create my own style.

  • I wanna play blues licks like slash

  • you guys helped me so much

I love guitar so much now!!!!!!

  • What a great headstock, cool!

  • Thanks... and thanks again!

My friend 'Motorakid' sent me your link.

Most natural and no nonsense teacher out there dude! We plan to learn a lot from you. Oh, ya, THANK YOU!

  • Awesome lesson. What strat is that anyway? I dig the headstock

  • Hey what happened to Jennifer?

  • great.. even for us none beginners..

  • you guys are awesome thanks! :D

  • music isn't just looking and copying what you see, it is also theory. You can always skip the chatting once you understand the theory.

  • yep, once youve got the theory nailed it all makes MUCH more sense

  • great lesson for us seniors who are also guitar players. these lessons will make us live longer. thanks david.

  • very informative video :)

  • A, C, D...C :p

  • now i remember why i decided to play by ear.

  • great lesson!!

  • thanks for another clear and great lesson - much appreciated!

  • omg!. Wow. I cant beilive Ive actully been practicing that A minor penatonic scale for years w/o even knowing what it was called, or even knowing it was a scale.lol.

  • dude you guys got to post something that explains scale formula... because people have no idea what your talking about unless you post an explanation and they can figure the scale out using the formula not by you just telling them were the notes are.

    just a suggestion

  • if you dont want to listen to the explantion it starts at 3:20

  • Excellent teacher!!! Man I need those DVDS!!

  • pause at 5:52 :L lol

  • wut?

  • i'm glad he talks about music and not something else....xD

  • ah-you mean 06:10... up and down, up and down, but I really love his guitar lessons

  • yeah^^ and "fingering" g-string etc... oh well ;) Good lessons it is =D

  • hiyaaaa david! nice to see you again!

  • dont forget to "Be careful with your fingering."

  • You guys are great. Thanks very much.

  • thank you....!

  • there pay site is so great for beginners, or anyone . but there beginner section was great for me , you feel like daves your buddy , and theres no pressure . you take your lesson on your schedule , 3 am if you want.

i took lessons locally also , but for the price of 4 real guitar lessons , i got 3 months of lessons with dave and the boys online .

you do the math. rock on good people.

  • BOXXY

  • great stuff can you please post videos on all thsoe different box positions for free?

this is a skill that should have no cost please

  • you know what else is free... searching on google. it's not hard to find.

    Or just buy the DVD.

NextLevelGuitar intentionally is only showing clips from the DVD, think of them as samples for you to decide whether to buy the DVD or not. They didn't make DVDs to burn money...

  • woooo, thanks!

  • cool really good video

  • Oh thank you very much! Great video as always!

This is the first I learned, too, but it was still refreshing to go through it again through a lesson.

    Thanks again

    Much love,
