i didn't mean to imply that lynbrook or zenas hsu were not good, because I'm sure they are great. But I was just observing that the soloists were from Saratoga
I think chikao's message speaks for itself. I know that Zenas is not a person to speak down on others like you, no matter how they play. That is an attribute that makes a real player. Zenas's playing speaks for itself, I have seen few kids with his talent, at Saratoga, Monta Vista, Homestead, or any of the other local schools. It was a loss to Lynbrook that Zenas was so good, he was accepted to Curtis in his junior year.
lol, do you notice that at the 2006-2007 CYS competition, who were there competing, and who was the winner? (Ask one of the persons you mentioned, so you'll get a clue and learn some.) And, did you hear clearly Dr. Felder saying where Zenas was heading? Has any one from Saratoga ever been able to get there?
lol, do you notice that in the 2007-2008 season for CYS, both soloists are from saratoga? (vivian fu and angela hwang), and ashley lau was from saratoga too.
Hsu is HAWT! just not in a gay way! I'm glad I also got this on tape! my camera ran out of tape on literally the very second after it finished. I've been to all the concerts at lynbrook since winter 1998, this is the best solo EVA! my bro is in concert choir now.
The above quotes were by the music critic, Keith Kreitman, on San Mateo County Times and other Alameda News Group papers, including the Tri-Valley Herald on May 15.
'What is most impressive about Hsu's performance is the maturity of his restraint and control and how he measures in even the pauses in a long cadenza. The true test of his maturity? He never uses his dazzling technique for pure show.'
'No question about it, Hsu is a major talent. The Shostakovich is a profound work, not only technically and interpretively demanding but also runs the gamut from the slow and lyrical to finger-busting speed passages. The piece includes a deeply emotional Third Movement, a passacaglia, in which Hsu strives to tear your heart out and just about succeeds.'
The soloist, Zenas Hsu, is truely an amazing violinist. If you ever heard his performance of the Schostakovich's Concerto No. 1 with the California Youth Symphony few days before this one, you will even more impressed with the musicianship and maturity he has for his age: 16!
Lynbrook is one of the top high schools in California. I was told that the orchestra received the score one week before the concert. For a public school's orchestra, this was a great accomplishment!
Zenas is the most talented violinist I have ever seen!

Amazing. This comes from thousands of hours of hard work. He seriously needs to get on a CD or on TV!
