where i live a guy went out side to smoke and when he was done he turned of the cigar with his shoe.... so when he went in, he took a spark on his shoe that ignited 40 kilos of black powder that obviously all the people in the room died.
i was wondering... i live in Minnesota and our there any clubs that you know of in our state? Also if you would want to get involved in pyrotechnics for shows and things of that nature what kind of degree would you get in colledge or is it more of a hobbie and not a job?
Right now the PGI website seems to be down, which is where I would go to look for a local club. I'm sure there is one in driving distance.
As far as getting a job in pyrotechnics, it is not something a degree is usually needed for. You just need to get in contact with company owners, or make a company of your own. Either way, finding a club and making some friends is the best way to start. In most circumstances pyrotechnics is a job on the side. It is very hard to make a career out of it.
Do you do thrust testing for the 1-2" BP? Also whats your powder to filler ratio, and what kind of wrappings are you using? It looked like brown wax paper.
I do not thrust test my BP in rockets. I am not sure what you mean by powder to filler ratio, I use straight BP as break in these canister shells. I make my casings out of the cardboard packaging of soda cans. It could be comparable to cereal boxes. All other paper I use is brown kraft.
I see how you're spiking the shell and wonder where's your spiking horse? The way you're doing it will result in some pretty torn-up hands if you're making a lot of shells. I know - I did it for a living at one time...
iv lerndso much from u and pyromite and pyrotechnics88 and lots of other freind so i just want to say thank for all the help becou at my age i sholdent be doing this but with your help iv ben l,ighting up the sky with couler o thank hope one day i get to se you
I did. Both ends were dipped in a BP/dextrin slurry. Both as a prime and to keep the powder secure in the fuses. If much powder falls out then it can effect the timing.
yes, that is indeed true. i usually dip my inserts in meal to ensure ignition. i would not reccomend dipping the fuses in star comp, bc one time i primed a salute shell in star comp and luanched above a river. the star comp burned slowly and the shell hit the water and put itself out. it was depressing. but we all learn from mistakes. at least it hit the water in a rural location rather than hitting a house and not putting itself out. thats why i took the safety precuation of the river.
Wow man. Amazing job. I love the test and the spikeing you do. =] You spike wayyyy differently than I. But thats fine xD. Cant wait til that gets shot up. And how far do you burry the 5" mortar?
Spiking with string is time consuming and laborious. Give fibreglass reinforced gaffer tape a go. Really lowers the tone to a boom, rather than a crack or bang.
tape of any kind will stretch good spiking string does not and when making ball shells a shell pasted with paper and paste will break nicely one make with tape will never break as nicely with out using heaps of booster
It does have no give at all, fiberglass does not stretch. Fiberglass tape has a tensile strength of ~150 lbs/inch in diameter. It has been used to make competition worthy shells, with and without additional spiking.
It's like a 5 second long flame sword.

It will take a year to make enough fireworks to last 10 min. on the 4th of July. But you'll have the best ones.

I do paste my twine in.
Nighthawkinlight 2 years ago
@Nighthawkinlight why not...? aka he's saying to dip your twine in paste so then when it dries it will shrink up and become tighter...
Also, I suggest you anchor the twine to a 2x4 or something in order to pull it much tighter .

I do not have one. And yes, I have noticed the effect on the hands. I'll build one one of these days.
I'm curious, in what way did you do this for a living?
Nighthawkinlight 2 years ago
I worked for a while at Rockingham Fireworks in NH. We mixed flash by the kilo and made 3" salutes by the hundred! Every pyro's dream!

very cool sound.
i used to mix greenmix with mgal. (boric acid needed)
this gives a very fine effect, the more mgal u add,the faster the burn will be,it also worked great on a sparkler. +5

Nighthawkinlight 2 years ago
how come the BP didnt just blow those tubes apart?
binladensassassin 2 years ago
Because it is rammed into them, not loose powder. It forms a solid mass that burns from one end to the other.
Nighthawkinlight 2 years ago
oh cool :)
and the tops were left open to allow the N2 and CO2 to escape without causing much preassure?
binladensassassin 2 years ago
Yep. There is more than N2 and CO2 however.

The BP doesn't burn that fast

Hmm. 5sec seems a bit too long for the last break, or is it 2sec you are using?
Any way that shell is looking pretty good, any Idea what the other 3 are going to be?
ventsi 2 years ago
Two second on the last break.
The shell is planned to be a TT/silver pattern star break, a TT/purple insert ring, a large purple break, then this shell of salutes and TT.

What's that your using to spike the shell? I thought sisal was the best...
TyrantBB 2 years ago
I am using several wraps of cotton here. Thin string is required to prevent buildup as I add breaks to the shell.

Very nice! 5*

Please excuse me for my lack of knowledge, but why do you have to wrap the shell in twine?

i think he does it so it doesnt fall apart i do know truly though. those shells shoot up pretty fast you know?
scootercraved 2 years ago
better compression
redeyesthe20th 2 years ago
its called "spiking", it is the process of winding strong string around the outer surface of a shell to produce a more regular bursting pattern
xBangergoosEx 2 years ago
Spiking with string is time consuming and laborious. Give fibreglass reinforced gaffer tape a go. Really lowers the tone to a boom, rather than a crack or bang.
eveningniteshade 2 years ago
Fiberglass tape is not suitable for multibreak canister shells. It is most often used on ball shells. Spiking with actual string is very necessary.
Nighthawkinlight 2 years ago
tape of any kind will stretch good spiking string does not and when making ball shells a shell pasted with paper and paste will break nicely one make with tape will never break as nicely with out using heaps of booster
Ralphgtx280 2 years ago
yeah i'm sure you're both right as far as a uniform break. I've only used the fibreglass packing tape on 3inch chinese salute shells.
Obviously there's no need for a symetrical break, but it certainly does a nice job at turning a crack into a boom.
eveningniteshade 2 years ago
Not true. Fiberglass tape will not stretch. It is very often used with great success on ball shells.
Nighthawkinlight 2 years ago
your saying it has no give at all didnt say it wouldnt work just you compare it with a properly pasted shell and you can tell the difference
Ralphgtx280 2 years ago
It does have no give at all, fiberglass does not stretch. Fiberglass tape has a tensile strength of ~150 lbs/inch in diameter. It has been used to make competition worthy shells, with and without additional spiking.
