That's lame that the credit says Alice Bag was in The Germs at the 4:20 mark... Alice Bag was in The Bags, a band she formed. Alice also formed Castration Squad, so they had two chances. She's an important feminist. The Bags were fuckin incredible. You'd think they'd do their research when making a documentary about women in punk.
Begs the question as to consequences and sub-currents: seen 30 years on from that period, one finds so many compromising again, especially among the males, one wonders if an overplus of uberfrauleinlichkeitigung did not queer it for a lot of them, and then thus backfire for those not willing so far avant garde to be and become of.
all these women still look really good, Punk must have the key to the fountain of youth or somthing....alice bag looks like she can be in her early 30's when in reality shes like in her early 50s....fucking amazing
RIP Ari Up. Thanks for being a pioneer and knowing the power of independence. Most importantly, thanks for not confusing empowerment with exploitation, like these so called female 'singers' of today do so often. Nothing wrong with being beautiful, just don't let it define you and what you're about.
Funny how punk either killed people young(Darby Crash,Vicious,JL Pierce) .In other instances it seemed to have miraculous anti-aging properties.Siouxsie's still absolutely gorgeous and powerful in her own right.Alice Bag,Slits,Poly Styrene,Lorna Doom,Hellin Killer,Exene,Eve Libertine ,et al still look great.
wow. look at these comments. dude was there since the "beginning of punk in l.a." and still unable to let go of who is and who isn't punk. talk about progress! that's the same conversation i was having as a 16 year old punk rocker.
it's all subjective and when it comes to ideas of definition the only one that matters is "self-definition."
they were some high school girls that started hanging around and they formed the gos gos and were quickly signed by a major record co. as there was big money to be made and they were cleaned up and taught how to play there instruments but they were not thought of as a punk band by punks the record co's did not sign real punk bands and if they did they were far and few between
Well thats fine for you to say,I was there in the beginning of punk in L.A when there were less then 50 punks/individuals in the whole movement we had a gathering place that was a rehearsal space and that was it~ when othrs came to town like from London, paris, germany we would find each othor I knew the gos gos before they ever had a band they continue
@tarkeldav That may be true but she was into punk before the Pretenders and it definitely influenced their overall sound. She was in a couple of punk bands prior to that but they never made into the limelight.
kind of both. it was evolving in America with bands like the MC5, New York Dolls, Iggy and the stooges, the Ramones but the Sex Pistols started the whole fashion thing in the UK..its hard to say
Yeah, it seems that everyone wants to decry the other scenes and claim that they and a select few of their friends are the "true" punks. The word was initially meant as an insult and was sort of adapted as a badge. Much like so many things in history--music was all evolving and globally a lot of people started creating similar music at similar times. It's SO ironic that the two things punk is undeniably against--elitism and uniformity--became such major components!!! :(

will someone tell chrissie hynde that she was definitley not considered a punk rocker by the punk community
tarkeldav 2 years ago
I know a lot of punks who would beg to differ. They started out playing punk clubs before they became popular, just like The Bangles and The Go-Go's.
